My take on the game after running a weekly play campaign for a year or so and counting, is that it *is* a fun way to explore the genre. My players like it, it is easy to run, combat is fluid and fast paced, something a lot of games have lost sight of. The positive out of the way, I have a couple of things that REALLY irk me about this game. Some of the skills seems SO specific, as in, why did we set that one off on its own. And other skills are absolutely missing. But the worst feature of the game is the book itself. While the book itself is pretty to look at, it is so poorly edited and organized, I cannot help but feel they did not have any people outside their studio really give it the once over to see if the layout was helpful, useful and well organized. It isn't. It is maybe one of the worst out there from a major rpg publisher. For instance, the main details of individual peices of cyberware are not to be found in the cyberware section, they are found in the Night Market section, which is back amongst the parts of the book my players assumed was the GM section. There were no real clear indicators in the book that this was the case. It works better via PDF, but I have a couple players who love a print book still and it is miserable for them. Over the course of a year of play, they know where everything is in the book now, but only through repetition and not from the layout of the book have they figured it out. There are some helpful edited versions (by players) out there, which make the book much more useful as a compilation, and suggest anyone who has the same issues we did, seek those out.

I've only used the PDF, I figured the book would have a different layout, because it works great for a PDF with links in it.

I wanted to point out 2 things about your video. they have cyberpunk red EASY MODE which is the cut down version of the game rules that just makes it easy to play. and they just announced the cyberpunk 2077/edgerunners anime preorder which is like a rules/setting expansion to play in 2077

24:42 Rockerboy is a reference to a character in the universe who was called Rockerboy, it's like "your the Elvis of (genre)" it's a word that's gotten into lingo to the point people have it in there heads like how we'll call someone a geek or a nerd, it's got many meanings but anyone can be a nerd over something

I've been running a CP - Red campaign since last September, and after the first few sessions I find the combat really fluid. I get what you're saying about 0 damage armor soaking, but once damage begins getting dealt on either side it makes the combat go much faster due to the increased armor ablation. The use of armor-piercing rounds does quick work of this too (some of my players have taken to the gear-head side of this game). Coming from playing Call of Cthulhu right before this the skill list doesn't bother me so much, they are options, and instead of getting caught in analysis-paralysis I either pick one for my players to roll on, or collaborate with my players to see what they think they'd be more likely to use. Long way of saying I'm having a blast with this game.

Also, one thing I didn't see you touch upon as far as the multimedia aspect is the Cyberpunk Red app. It creates characters, stores their data, down to the bullet, and handles dice rolls for each skill among other things. It is an excellent tool that helps really simplify play.

I've played a couple of cyberpunk games and red is probably the best, much easier than 2020. The autofire mechanic and range DC make firefights pretty tense, when a solo gets a turn something dies, always. I also love long skill lists and the quick builds are good guides for players.

Awesome review! My group's experience with Cyberpunk RED was frustrating and we felt like we were fighting the rulebook constantly, trying to find rules, mechanics, or item descriptions. I came to the conclusion that Cyberpunk RED has a great system of mechanics in an unintuitive presentation. I think OSR principles to running Cyberpunk make it far more smoother and better as a system, and I feel like there is a great OSR/NSR style sandbox ttrpg underneath the poorly structured rulebook. Try not to think of the skills as skills, and more as hyper specialized saving throws. You don't roll perception unless someone or something is actively trying to trick your vision. A lot of the players fell into the pitfall trap of "DnD-ing" and asking the GM for skill rolls, or running a session like it was DnD. I think Cyberpunk RED thrives when you run far away from that style of TTRPG.

Great that you made this. On some of the corny-ness, I have always gotten the vibe that Cyberpunk presents itself a lot like vampire the Masquerade in it being a whole culture and that’s backed into the rules. A rocker boy is someone who uses art to fight against the corpos, so it’s more of a label than literal. Same with music. You are right, future is synth and synth pop, but underground rock is more “punk” so it is exemplified by the names and setting.

Every time I look at my copy of Red I glance at a couple of pages and then I reach back for 2020. Ive been running a 2020 campaign on and off for about 7 years. My players love the setting but what is funny is we rarely get into combat. The Rockerboy usually sways the battle before it starts or other shenanigans happen. I think I shot off the head of one of my players early on in the campaign and they replaced it with a robot head. This pretty much set the tone for why combat should be feared and they do alot to stay on task during missions. Might be my tables all time favorite game. I really should at least read the netrunning section of Red and transfer it over to 2020 if we dont outright change to Red eventually. Thanks for the review!

I'm going to be honest, Dave. CP2020 was a favorite of mine. It was stylishly and concisely written, and I was able to teach myself the rules right from the rulebook. None of the versions since - CP3, Cyber Gen, etc have been as approachable. I've read thru the quick start and the CP Red monster rulebook and... no. I don't see anything really that is an improvement. Maybe this "easy mode" version is for me....

Im convinced people are running the game a bit off when they say armor just soaks all damage and takes forever to break down. Theres a simple dichotomy between concealable armor and handguns, and shoulder/heavy weapons for heavy armor. Match the weapons with the situation. Handgun people are better in social stealth situations where people arent wearing combat armor. Of course if you shoot armorjack with pistolds endlessly, you wont get anywhere. But SP11 will get shredded quickly against shotgun slugs doing an average of 18-19 damage a shot. Even with good armor, a low body character will go down to 3-4 shotgun blasts.

I played a LOT of CP2020 back in the day, but I have not picked up CP Red yet. I might now. looks like the system has actually been streamlined in the new revision in some interesting ways. We kind of fell off after full-borg conversions and the "Maximum Metal" sourcebook made all my players lust after ridiculous hardware to an unhealthy degree. Your examination of the critical fumble rule sparked a memory regarding my time in the game. I was GM'ing a group of three doing the usual back alley deal when surprise surprise, things went wrong and guns were drawn. All 3 players pulled their iron. All three players rolled critical fails on their attack roll, and then rolled a fumble, one after the other. Each of the three players shot another of the players round robin style (randomly rolled, again); each taking a single round from a choom. I took mercy on them with the npc's being (rightfully) paralyzed by utter incomprehension for a round, then combat resumed and our slightly scuffed heroes created a brand new Night City street legend that they NEVER lived down. One of them would inevitably try to turn it into a "That's just how crazy my crew is" flex with varying degrees of success in later sessions. Good times.

I ran a 6 week long mini campaign with RED a couple years back and had an absolute blast. Going from D&D 5e to RED I found the setting incredibly enthralling, if only because I didn't realise how limiting fantasy could be. If anyone is interested, I highly recommend the Drivethru RPG product Cyberpunk RED Easy Mode. Condenses all the main rules (not Netrunning) into 30 pages, and will totally help smooth out those first couple of sessions.

Honestly if the game's really been expanded, I might take a look at it again. I really wasn't thrilled about core RED because it just seemed to trim too much from 2020. Yes, 2020 is quite bloated and needs a lot of streamlining, but for me it feels like they went too far with it. I really didn't like the 2045 setting all that much either because it's just too different from what you'd expect from a cyberpunk game, but I get they probably wanted to spice things a bit for old timers. Still, it feels like a wasted opportunity to go with something so different from 2077 given the game's popularity. With that said, netrunning is absolutely great and a huge improvement in every sense. I also absolutely love what they did with the roles and they have amuch more of an identity now. Edit: Personally I like the cheese. 😂 It's part of the spirit of the game.

I've had an idea for a reality hopping meta narrative setting where our pc are regular people with regular lives, who discover a place on the boundaries of reality. Your group get to decide what form it takes e.g. magic school, secret government institution, etc and this place acts as a gateway to other realities. Like SG1, Sliders or Quantum Leap. Each setting can have it's own rules (an excuse to try out new systems and homebrew). I like the idea of stealing the cyberpsychosis rules and empathy and re-flavouring them to show how these worlds are effecting them as well. You all start human, but by finding entities and places of power you could changing into something...different. If you lose all your "empathy" you might completely lose your humanity, but that just means you now get to role-play your new alien perspectives.
@kierduros
@kierduros 24 дня назад
Monte Cook Games has a game called "The Strange" where the characters do move among various realities... and more than just some different rules, there are also new forms the characters take. So if someone's a solider in the regular modern settings, they can be a knight in a more fantasy flavored world... with all their gun shooting skills replaced by sword or bow wielding ones. It's a neat concept and should at least provide some more inspiration for what you brew up yourself.

The game is pretty fun, I run a few adventures for my friends and we had a blast. I even managed to convince my wife to play with us, which is in itself an achievment. Sure, it's not perfect, but it does not deserve all the hate it gets online. I don't really like the netrunning rules, but I believe they can be adjusted easily with home rules. I cannot wait for R.Talsorian to release the edgerunners kit 🙂

18:43 yeah, martial arts are great, basically the best "weapon" in the game with high body, maybe excepting modified rocket launchers, also of course, impossible to confiscate had completely forgotten you're meant to dodge bullets with Dex and not Reflexes, guess I've been doing it wrong for ages (this has made my party's high-Ref members essentially invulnerable) one of my personal nitpicks with the game mechanics is the netrunning rules are so much fun, and so much better than most cyberpunk hacking systems, but often so disconnected from the action unless the DM manufactures some "use the computers to open the door before gas fills the room!!!!" scenarios constantly, the netrunner tends to just do their work turning off things and stealing paydata while the rest of the crew just stands around the server room watching the doors, waiting for the netrunner to say "I'm in." or being prepared for their brain to dramatically catch fire. it also can't really be used in a fight unless the DM very gamily puts random unreliable auto turrets in the room with the enemies or robots inexplicably wired to the local Net, when trying to "sell" the system to new players, people have asked me repeatedly if you can quick hack people mid fight like the game, or hack things from miles away like in edgerunners and in both cases i just have to awkwardly say "uhhhh no but the mechanics are pretty cool"

I really think this is a good game at its core. Its just that in terms of design, they made a few missteps that I think really hold the game back. Plus... it just didn't click with my group as much. The rules are too complicated in some parts, some things were left convoluted or unintuitive for the sake of game balance (such as Netrunners using different DVs from anything else in this game, or how spray and pray is not even an option and autofire is more akin to being a sniper than anything else). Plus, we came from shadowrun in search of something that fits us better, and so being used to shadowruns insane amount of gear, Cyberpunk felt really shallow in that department. Granted, when we played it, Black Chrome wasn't out. That might have really helped our experience. Now Black Chrome is out, Easy Mode exists, and the Edgerunner Mission Kit is on the horizon, we'll give Cyberpunk RED another shot soon. I hope it fares better now than it did back then

Hacking is still a bit overly complex for a sub-system that only one player deals with - but a huge improvement. Only borderline breaks The Sandwich Rule now. The rule where a sub-system shouldn't make it so that everyone else should just go make a sandwich while 1-2 playes do their thing with the GM.

I find Cyberpunk RED hard to really understand as a game. Ultimately there are few cyberpunk stories that focus on combat and violence to the extent that CPR weights it in the book. Friday Night Firefight is a pretty good combat system that allows for quick gunfights, but as soon as subsystems like cyberware, armor and martial arts are added into the mix it becomes complex to run, with lots of situational effects or constantly adjusting values. The painful thing is that the setting of Cyberpunk wants interactions with crazy people and communities, it wants players to engage with the humanity of its characters through the contrast of this colorful world and the danger of the jobs that a crew is undertaking. And the setting is great (although sometimes bit much honestly and its very easy to paint yourself into a corner through improvising due to how much established lore there is), so you want people to roll play out solutions, or engage with their skills for creative approaches that feel unique rather than just kicking the door in and firing a gun. Cyberpunk games are at their best for me in short stories as this is what lets people throw away a character with reckless abandon. But CPR wants to have a long character progression with skills and leveling up and it just encourages players to behave too conservatively due to investment. For all the advice in the GMs section, the game is caught between gamifying firefights and a ton of legacy rules, with very few that actually support an on-going campaign. The result is a system that's functional in moment-to-moment gameplay, but a lot of work to GM, with episodic scenarios that are by-the-numbers cyberpunk plots that can't really tap into most of the cyberpunk themes other than 'corpos bad' and 'capitalism has valued everything and lives are cheap'.
@Pneumanon
@Pneumanon 21 день назад
Agreed. I played RED for a couple of years after it was released. Cyberpunk RED is basically a combat system with some extra bits and pieces tacked on. Netrunning is just a sub-system of combat. What the game tells you it wants you to do in the game and what the system actually supports are completely at odds with each other. Very little support for campaign play. Some of the Roles you can choose are effectively useless from a mechanics point of view. For example- the Rockerboy has 1 Role Ability and the opportunity to buy some musical instruments. There is no other support for the Rockerboy to do anything specific to being an entertainer beyond that. Meanwhile the Solo gets 5 different Role Abilities, an entire combat system, an entire weapons list to choose from and an entire cyberware list to choose from. Yes, your Rockerboy can also buy guns and get into combat, but if that's what you're doing, why bother choosing the Rockerboy? Just choose a Solo and give them the Play Instrument skill and a high Cool stat. Other Roles suffer similarly. It's an ok game in small doses, but ultimately it's quite an outdated game that has been given a clunky update, a fresh lick of paint and a huge boost in popularity due to the video game & animation.
@cameronjohnson918
@cameronjohnson918 21 день назад
@@Pneumanon Ah I actually don't agree 100% with you, I think most of the role abilities are fine, with Rockerboy's in particular getting really good with charismatic impact letting you control huge groups of people. That's cool. What's not cool is how these abilities make the game more complex to run, like the Lawman's one which summons helper NPCs in a battle, or well, Rockerboy's which effectively makes it impossible for a GM to plan a balanced encounter because there's no way to predict when a mob is going to pop up and fuck with an entire adventure. I do agree that these abilities should have far more things helping the GM implement these into RP and the lives and implications of the PCs though. There is a lot of lacking support, which is something you can compensate for as a GM if you want to dump 10+ hours into game prep each week, but I don't. I agree that the system is being massively supported by the hype for 2077. The combat system works fine, but its the least interesting part of the setting and it gets an unfortunate focus. I always look at this game and get really excited about a cool story I could build with my players, but it shines less brightly than many of the other great games I could spend the moments of my life playing.
@Pneumanon
@Pneumanon 20 дней назад
@@cameronjohnson918 You say you don't 100% agree with me, but it seems like you do! My point is exactly what you said. The game tells you you can do things, e.g. control huge groups of people, but it has absolutely no mechanics whatsoever for actually doing that in the game. So in reality you actually _can't_ do it with the rules as written. Either the GM just makes it all up without mechanics (at which point you're just playing make-believe) or the GM has to create their own mechanics. As you said, you don't want to do that and you shouldn't _have_ to. If the game specifically gives players the ability to do that, there should be mechanical support for how to do it. Also, notice again that the Rockerboy and the Lawman Role Abilities you mentioned are essentially Combat Skills, summoning NPCs to be used in 'encounters' (aka combat). Other things can be done with Charismatic Impact as written, but most of it is left up to the GM to figure out how to implement. Most of the non-combat examples are along the lines that "one or more NPCs are now hanging out with you doing things that have little-to-no mechanical impact". If you were actually roleplaying your character, you could use Charismatic Impact for some very useful things. Like let's say you use your Charismatic Impact to sway an audience into boycotting your rival faction's services for a month, allowing your own faction to make more money, gain more turf and gain the upper hand in that area and out compete them in a way that doesn't involve combat. Or, even simpler, let's just say you want a campaign that focuses on being a band of Rockerboys competing with other bands to climb your way to the top of the charts and be the biggest band in Night City. Cool, those things make sense in character. Now have fun inventing the rules to do it! Again, the Rockerboy is just one example, there are many other problems with the game. As you said initially- it's ok for short campaigns focusing mainly on direct combat, but it doesn't do much more than that.

As you kind of address the Netrunner in Cyberpunk and the Decker in Shadowrun has to be streamlined or they end up being a solo mission and hinderance to the gameplay which is why some avoid them like the plague

Friday Night Firefight was what they called their combat system. Also, yes, they did use chapter names as you see. I started playing the first edition in 1988, and switched to the second when it came out in 1990. There were some things that I loved about the system. Other things I hated.

The only reason I'm not super into Cyberpunk RPGs these days is because no matter how distopian the future was predicted by writers like Willian Gibson or Black Mirror screenwriters... the Reality fo the World since 2020 has simply become WORSE. I'm just waiting for a bit stronger milatiristic religious zealotry to be added to the mix of current day reality and I'll be finding Warhammer 40k too optimistic. Great Review, BTW. I didn't know all this support the game has received since It's launch. It's very good to know that. And hey: your review just came out right after the announcement of the Brazilian Portuguese edition of the game. Great timing.

I played a Netrunner in a short Cyberpunk Red campaign. It was a ton of fun as long as we weren't in combat. As soon as bullets started flying it became really tedious, crunchy, and too damn long! You mentioned armor soak, but you don't even need armor when there is plenty of cover around! And as soon as vehicles and drones were involved the combat slowed down even further. I love the setting but I'll be using something like The Sprawl or CBR+PNK to run that setting instead.

Personally, I still think Cyberpunk 2020 is the superior game, but there’s a lot to love about Red. Netrunning is now usable right out of the book (I never use CP2020’s Netrunning. It is awful. Thank god for Interlock Unlimited.) The expanded Lifepath system is even better than 2020’s and the Role abilities are fun. What I’m not overly keen on is Red’s setting. It feels far more Elysium than Blade Runner. I just don’t particularly like scarcity economics in my cyberpunk. Overall, a good game and a lot of book for your eddies.
@kierduros

Here's the thing about damage and armor: Sure, it can soak a lot of bullets from small and medium handguns. But, all those bullets cost money and you got rent to pay, choom. Get your Solo in there close with a katana or some wolvers (or a piston-powered punch) and you're ignoring half that armor right away... and ablating it with every hit. Plus you're also tying up that gonk so he can't dodge the shots the rest of the team is taking. Loved the 2020 setting back in the day when 2020 was the far-off future. Been playing RED for a bit now and I'm getting used to the new variations in the rules. A lot comes down to the flavor you and your players bring to the game itself. Mine do a lot of legwork and shady stuff... and then use all that to their advantage when an actual fight breaks out. Well, all that and their Solo, who's around for when stuff really hits the fan.

Never played RED, beginners box didn't strike me as a must-play over 2020, but I'm mildly interested in the full book Played and ran 2020 though, and I guess they tried to fix how ABSOLUTELY DEADLY and overshot. Many of my characters were obliterated and had limbs blown off with guns and heads torn off in melee more often than I was ready for... Also I straight up didn't allow netrunner PCs, way too much hassle (not that my players wanted to be one though)

It's a decent (ish) game. It's a chaotic mess that is neither a sequel to CP2020 nor the prequel to CP2077. It has streamlined rules that instead of being simple, are more complicated than the original (which weren't that much complicated) The combat, the core of cyberpunk, is watered down to slowly stripping the enemy armor and after that hitpoints. The system uses a painstaking ammo count, yet it uses abstract rules when it comes to burst fire (if you fire a burst from a 9mm SMG it is just a bit less efficient than it would be if you had used a 30mm Gatling) Armor piercing ammo don't pierce armor. A bow is as fast firing weapon as an assault rifle. Melee combat is overpowered to the point that using guns make no sense if you can use melee. Rules are spread out seemingly randomly throughout the book and the book consists of the tables upon tables that are repeated several times throughout the chapters at least three time each. Most things that built the mood of the game like describtion of guns, cyberware and equipment are gone. The book has entire passaages taken, without any edit, from infamous CPv3. Thera are good things though. The cyberspace machanics and depiction is good. The new, refreshed take on the roles is great (they are still character classes named otherwise) which also support not only mechanics but also the role play element. It also does away with the CP2020 trope called "Shut the fuckup and play a SOLO" :) The streamlining of skills also works great. The font, graphics and other details are much better, still far behind current standards but it looks like a book released in 2010 not in the late 70s.

The bloated skills and bizarre body mod disparity due to modern sensibilities really took me out of enjoyment. It’s decent, but has too many speed bumps. The setting’s pretty off-brand for Cyberpunk, both in genre and the franchise. Some good bits are how Fixers and their ecosystem work, the better balancing of Roles and that you can change them and the layout and design aesthetic .
@Pneumanon
@Pneumanon 20 дней назад
The game suffers from it's own legacy in a way. It's too tied to things that were designed over 30 years ago, both in the systems & the lore, and ends up being clunky as a result. Some of the new stuff that's in there is hampered by being tied to the older stuff. The Fixer's ecosystem and the overall economy is something I think is a good idea, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. I understand why they didn't redesign the game from the ground up, but I think you could end up with a much better game if it had been.

This is a very well presented review. However, I doubt if this game deserves a review this well thought-out. It claims to be a skill-based system but it’s just a class-based system with skills all over the place. It also uses a d10 just because. This could have been a d20 system with damage reduction mechanics. Skill list needs a major overhaul. Awful system overall, would not recommend. 3/10.
@Captain_Chair

I still prefer 2020's core system but love the class changes to the more infomous roles, im still eager to see. Semantics but the terms is more related to in world culture. Its divergent from ours where the term rock from the 80's became a catch all commercial term for the kind of corporate media they consume. Its like saying punk essentially because youre co opting the term for the culty influencers. They dont have the term influencer though. thats a term from our world. From experience being cyberpsycho isnt difficult or bad to rp its actually pretty fun being not the psycho and being the psycho. In my table you were a normal character but you're constantly rolling severity for failures and are kept far away from fragile npcs. Instead of feelin like a game over its a quality of life change that i honestly dig
