I found your video 20months after original posting.. I'm very well acquainted with your British military jargon; military efficiency experts have universal (catholic) appeal. Truism applies to all men. I agree, the middle bracket arrangement makes for a more rigid and stronger location to mount the electric motor(s) hardware and hard points. I've not kept pace with current developments; ie. components, metallurgy, gearing, gears, chains, sprockets, drives.. I used to have well developed legs to power my bicycle everywhere here in Ft. Walton Beach, FL... I agree with you Sir... There ought to be more companies besides Bosch, BaFang, Shimano or Wal-Mart competing for the long term welfare of the people and this planet. ALOHA

This was extremely informative and helpful. Thanks for taking the time to provide this video. I am leaning towards the the BAC 2000 controller option, with the motor mounted the traditional manner, in front of the downtube. My thinking is that with the frame geometry on my bike, the long mounting brackets of the golden chain version should keep the motor elevated enough to not get battered by rocks on trails. Hopefully the BAC 2000 controller could also be be fit between the mounting brackets the way the stock controller is.
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 4 года назад
Thanks. I'm going to look at the 2000 for future projects. A few people are using the quilbix frame. Once I get one in my hands I'll look at the mounting options. Potentially it could be side mounted with the right bracket. It's not that big but the plugs stick our a bit.

Wow this has to be the best ebike video ever made. No outlandish claims Just straight to the point. every aspect covered with just the right amount of detail and live examples and clips. I have been decided on this motor for my Devinci Dixion for a few months. i will be ordering it the first week of January$$. The only curiosity i have is if you have a range test including the AH of your battery the cells it is using. The plan for mine was to start with a luna 30q wolf pack 52v 12 AH. Do you think that is a good way to start? Anyway THANK YOU for the excellent informative video. One of the best i have seen and i have been compulsively researching ebikes for the last 13 months.

At 7:30 you state the motors will appear less loud while off-road, due to the difference in the road/trail surface. I agree with this. Additionally, riding off road, over rocks, bumps, and tree roots is quite loud itself, which will also help mask any additional noise.

The biggest bit of advice I would have welcomed when first buying the BBSHD or any bolt on would of been, make sure the bike your putting it on is a strong bike. If you are going full suspension make sure the flex in the pivot points will withstand the forces applied from the motor in both radial and lateral axis. The torque these motors put out is far beyond any pedal power I can put out and I wear spandex on a weekend. I like a good pedal so I think the cyc is for me 3 clutches in the bbshd in 2000 miles. Is there a chance you could do a pedal resistance test on both motors?
@HighVoltageKits

I'll look into that. Do I need any special equipment? The bike advice is solid though. Cheap bikes are not safe with this kind of power! Cheers

Hi again Great video very clearly and well explained . The main thing I have noticed with the bbshd and the noise level as it depends on what frame you have it mounted to as the vibrations are transmitted via the frame. My old bike was a Carrera hard tail and the bbshd was noticeably louder than my current bike with is a giant trance full suspension you can see the frame material is thicker especially round the bottom bracket area. How would you say the torque levels of the cyc compare to the bbshd would you say they are similar? Also do you no if there is an option to change the display on the cyc I'm guessing there is if the controller is changed. Keep up the good work. Cheers Daniel
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 4 года назад
You make an excellent point with the sound. I had not considered the frame as being a factor but it makes alot of sense. In terms of torque the CYC I believe is 180nm and the bbshd 160nm max on both. Only the one display from CYC but there will be more options with the ASI controllers. Both direct from them or via ERT. Cheers

Very informative video.How do you think basic maintenance will compare with the BBS HD? Particularly when it comes to greasing the gears. Did you consider the purchasing the gear version?
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 4 года назад
B. Bergy Thanks! I did not consider the geared version. I just had a bad feeling about it. I don't think many people got it and I doubt it will continue to be made. I terms of maintaining I think the bbshd has a clear edge as the parts are widely available along with specialist tools and lots of videos. That said the x1 is built well. I doubt I will need to service much. Regressing looks to be a relatively easy task as the gear box is pretty easy to remove. They come extremely well lubricated already. You would have to take of the motor to do this which is marginally more of a job than the bbshd. I think you might be able to do the main gear on the bbshd while it's still bolted on but I'd have to check. I haven't had issues with either motor. I have do my bbshd in the spring so I will let you know how that goes for sure. Hope this rather rambling answer helps. Cheers.

For trails and the riding you describe a quality 36 volt pack with good cells will do what you need. 52 volts will give more speed. Hope this helps. If you ask on the cyc Facebook you can see what 36 volt packs people are recommending. There will likely be more choice at 52 or 48 Volts. Make sure the bms and cells can handle the high current draw of the cyc. Cheers!

I have but as I am still refining things I did not want to cut into the harness. I only have one lol. As you already have a BBSHD have you considered this for a performance upgrade? Check out this video of my BBSHD with the bac800 controller. You can get a massive performance boost without replacing your motor. If you later wanted to get the CYC then you could also use the bac800 with it just by changing out a few bits of wiring and some parameter settings. The closet place to you is in the UK and with the pound doing badly against the Euro it's not bad price wise. I am going to do some videos installing the bac800 on my CYC over the next few months. Hi On mine and my partner's bikes I have shorted the main wiring loom. There is only 8 wires all colour coded the the main part of the bafang loom with 1 plug at one end and 4 at the other I think I took about 10inches out and now the cables are perfect length so have very neat installs on both bikes. I just simply cut the cable to desired length and soilder them back together I did stagger the joints slightly then heat shrink each joint with some small heat shrink the individual cables are 28 AWG then 2 larger bit of heat shrink over the whole lot. Spare looms can be found for not very much so give it a try. Cheers

Does the CYC X1 have more power than the BBSHD at 72v? can either of them run at 84v peak voltage? I want to switch from my hub motor for hill climbing reasons. But my bike is a single speed no gears. So I don't know how this would work? I guess it's not so much the hills I'm just interested in trying a mid-drive because I just like challenging things. I wonder how these compare to the Luna Cycle Cyclone 3000w Mid- Drive as the whole set up is pretty cheap, But I'd rather have a better unit then save money. Out of the CYC X1 and BBSHD if you could only keep one which one would it be? Wait im confused is the Luna Cycle Cyclone the CYC X1 or is it a different unit? Sorry, I'm new to these mid-drive beasts. lol

I am still on the stock nylon gear. Some of the noise is the camera location and some of it is the high rpms. Some is the road noise from the nobby tires. It's not so loud in the riding position. It's a fabulous motor. I wish it was developed more. I like the ultra maybe I'll try it one day. I'm looking at a build with the lightning rods this year so purpose built rather than a frame conversion.

Gen2 seems like a nice kit but I still cant get my head around bb mounting. There are 3 issues that I see: 1) according to diagram for BSA 83mm on their website the mounting bracket is 83mm wide (obviously) but intended frames are either 68 or 73mm wide, mine seems to be 71, how do you make up for that 1cm? 2) chain ring side N on diagram is 99.6mm wide from the center of the frame, while the other side P is 91mm, that is almost 1cm difference in pedal distance from the center of the frame. I dont know if that matters or not I havent purchased or tried this kit. 3) N+P=19.6cm, seems a bit wide when I put that measurement on my bike(hybrid, not even a narrow road bike) which is 140mm at its widest point. That is 3cm of difference per side (only?) which honestly may not be that bad, but issue no 1 above is what worries me, it doesnt seem like it will be mounted snug to the frame around bb? Or am I looking at this completely wrong...
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 4 года назад
The kit has spacers for the most common sizes. But you can get bb spacers of various sizes at pretty much any bike shop. So although 71mm is unusual it's not a show stopper in terms of using the kit. My bike uses all the spacers with a 68mm bb. The best advice to to contact Jon at CYC. He is really helpful and if you tell him the frame you have along with your concerns he can give you specific advice. Good luck with your build!

Hello, have you ever thought about changing the gear ratio to achieve theoretically 100 kmh and test the real speed? Seems like your setup has rpm being a bottleneck, try to decrease reduction ratio and test some continuous max speed
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 4 года назад
I'm only running 52 volts on the X1. 100kph is possible at 72. Whether I try it that fast we will see! At 52 volts the rpm tops out at about 7500 under load. At 72 with a bac2000 it jumps up to 12000. So yeah if I hit 69kph at 7500 in theory 12000 on the same hill will put me over the 100... But the limit is 60 there so I will find a different location to test in spring.

Unfortunately I can’t fit a Bafang motor to my tandem as there’s two bolts fitted underneath the bottom bracket which are used to adjust the eccentric shell for chain tensioning , looking at the design of this motor I could place this motor within the frame . I would only won’t to run this motor using P.A.S sensor As I only need this motor for taking the sting out of the hills. Are the cables long enough to reach the front handle bars if I fit the motor to the rear. Is there room to fit a single chainwheel crank on opposite side of motor as will need to connect chain to both front and rear cranks.
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 4 года назад
The cable harness is way longer than it needs to be so it might reach the extra distance. As far as what will fit I would shoot cyc an email with the frame details. I have zero experience with tandem bikes other than a rough idea of the concept. Why would you not use the cyc on the front?

There is a sturmy archer hub that can do 3kw. I have no idea if yours will handle it. Changing gear under load probably a bad idea. I like the idea of igh though. If you can afford to you could try it. You could also ask about on the forums to see if anyone has had any joy.

The new Kindernay is the only hub candidate for that amount of torque and power. It comes with 14 gears,like the Rollhoff, but it is a completely different brand. All made in Europe. I am pretty sure you can set up three different riding profile on thr cyc so you would be able to set one for 500 watts or 250 etc and disable the throttle. I think that is the current eu law...

@@HighVoltageKits so in other words; i could buy the cyc kit and restrict it so I don't fall foul of u.k ebike laws?👀
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 4 года назад
That what a lot of people do. You can still run into issues. It's worth researching the attitudes of local police etc to ebikes. The fact you can unlock it by pushing a button might not wash in a few places. I'm hopeful attitudes will change. In general if a rider is safe and respects the road conditions people ought not to bother you.

Is this stabil enough for hard mountainbiking
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 4 года назад
I would not take my bike hard riding down a mountain. If the bike is capable of hard riding I dont see why you cant add the motor and ride it hard. You need to allow for the extra weight when specifying your suspension and brakes etc.

Looks like it needs a proper chain guard.
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 4 года назад
The newer design has a more guarding. I have not got my pants caught so far..I did on my bbshd tho. That was embarrassing lol. I had to lie down and take my boot off lol.
@sigmaoctantis_nz
@sigmaoctantis_nz 4 года назад
@@HighVoltageKits Oh that would be awkward, it's a bit of a concern to me because I often wear pants rather than shorts. The BBSHD crank gear looks enclosed or is it not? I'm looking at buying one for my bike.
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 4 года назад
Kind of. I was stupid and forgot to secure my pants and chewed them up with the bbshd. Regardless of chain guards I would secure things anyway.

Are you using any ebike specific parts such as a chain or cassette?
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 4 года назад
Right now it's just the stock stuff that came with the frame. I will see how it copes at 5kw soon! The rear cassette is steel so should be ok.Im not sure about the freewheel hub tho. I may need to change that. In general steel is best for ebikes.

Nice. I have a BBSHD. I Love it. Due to chain failure anxiety, I'm running an ebike specific chain. Lol! Keep the content coming! Good job!
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 4 года назад
Thanks I'll try. Is it the KMC E? I only busted chains when I stood up to try and get the bike moving faster than it would with the motor in a high gear... only did that twice. I have KMC 6-8 speed chain on now. But I am fixed to a single gear and leaving the motor to do all the work. That's on my bbshd. The cyc does not spin fast enough with stock 52 volts and no field weakening to do this. Cheers

I'm pretty sure it's going to ship in around two months. They have a backlog to clear. I am checking this though. Shoot Jon at CYC a message and he will likely give you a timeline. If you tell him the bike you are using and the bb type and width that will help also. Links to CYC in the description. Cheers

Jeez, both of those are VERY noisy. In comparison, my Bafang CST 500W 36V hub motor is virtually silent with a 14S6P pack (28mph) on a 29er MTB.
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 4 года назад
The bbshd is way quiter at 36 volts as well. Some of it is the shear mechanical noise at high RPM. Some if it is exaggerated due to camera placement. But really with chains and this power greater noise is unavoidable with a mid drive.

Thanks Nick, I have been using your video. It was very helpful. The breakthrough for me was when i understood how the power factor works with the pedal cadence. I'm just setting it to zero. I just want to be able to spin the paddles and get the desired level of power with no variation due to cadence. Might sound a bit odd to kill the feature but it works for me! Cheers
