I've been off the bike for way too long. Thanks for reminding me of the base-ics! 😂 Currently my base is tiny. Grow the base!

Just ride often and condition yourself and later you will go faster.

Best speech of cycling i have ever heard, the info about the base you're talking about it's so true, i did the base phase running pedestrian and it work for me. Most people told me i was running to slow, but when i finish my 110 miles a week base phase i got from 17:40 to 16:52 in a 5k and i felt great

Man! I would give you 2 thumbs up if I could, that was a great presentation of everything I was doing wrong for many years and have not become stronger. Thinking that the more I go zone 4-5-6, the stronger I'll be.
@Veloharmony
@Veloharmony 4 года назад
Rob, even the pros are really particular about when they go hard. That's why they sit in and work hard either during the sprints or for the climbing specialists only on the climbs that matter and then they start spinning on the trainer immediately after the race to accelerate recovery. Most serious riders treat hard riding like seasoning...just a dash, but when they go hard, it's really hard. When you have a solid base, most of your riding becomes fast but you're so fit that you're not necessarily going hard during those times.

I'm training about 6,000 miles a year; compared to untrained riders, they definitely struggle to keep up when I'm in my zone 1-2. When I ride with a world class rider, I'm sure their zone 1 would be my zone 4-5. There is always going to be someone fitter than you. Amazing!

I was off for a pretty long time. And I must say that Base Ride is important. OFF-TOPIC: And I just wanna say that you are both funny and crazy. And it's funny when you go outta topic. It's been a while, and I was wondering why don't you use a GoPro handler in your bike rides?
@Veloharmony
@Veloharmony 6 лет назад
I use the Removu S1 gimball because it's features are soooo much better than the gimbal made by GoPro. Now if you meant the goPro stick, I had one but after buying the REmovu, I switched because of the movie like quality of the video with the stability it provides. I have other Gopro attachments but I found that when attached to the bike the field of view is limited and it's not as smooth. I only use that when I do rides that are pretty much race fast.

I am a 50+ year rider getting back into cycling and commuting on paved roads an maybe the occasional cross country short cut. Is this relevant to me? I just want to have fun on by bike and try to get back into some form of shape.
@Veloharmony
@Veloharmony 6 лет назад
Yes, it's not just for racers. Physical activity in any sport must be taken cautiously by building your base, so that you condition your entire body before going faster. This way you minimize the chance of injuries.
@ADY_SR

can you also explain how to properly do base training

Thanks for all your valuable info. My bikes fit me perfectly after I followed your tips and knowledge. Concerning this subject: I can only train during the weekend and don´t have an indoor trainer, so, can I base run during the week ( 2 x 60'') to sustain the gains I make on the bike?
@Veloharmony
@Veloharmony 6 лет назад
barnabé welcome to the channel. It is the generosity of the channel's Patreon sponsors that enable me to have the time to do this. I am glad it has worked for you. Running during the week will give you conditioning for 'running'. Each sport requires specificity since the muscular demands are different. If you want to improve invest in an indoor trainer. Look at this way, is your health worth the few hundred dollars it will cost for a decent indoor trainer? I think it is. If you decide to get one, buy a good one that feels like you are on the road. I recommend this one: www.veloharmony.com/recommended-cycling-products/#cycleops

Veloharmony, I'm currently training indoors due to winter. I'm looking for a bike computer that will register my cadence. Do you have any recommendations for a cycling computer? Thank you for your help! Sincerely, Frado
@Veloharmony

Here is a link to the head units made by Garmin that I recommend. You can choose a model that fits your budget or based on the size of the unit you may prefer. You will need to purchase a cadence sensor to attach to your crank arm that will work with your head unit. All of that is listed there. www.veloharmony.com/recommended-cycling-products/#garmin

Thanks for sharing. The cyclist that passed you has been passed by others. Focusing on others is an exercise in futility. We all have different talents, training histories etc. It is more important to make the most out of your talents and situation. I am glad you found the channel, because this is where you can learn to develop your own engine. It all begins with fit. Welcome to the channel.

@@Veloharmony thank you! do you have a coaching program for absolute beginners? I'm trying to get back in shape and hang with the neighborhood poser group rides (they have $$$$ thousand dollar bikes, they are fast but not too fast). I don't care if I have a $100 dollar steel bike and snail pace but I want to improve! My fking neighbors are silently mocking (get a new bike etc) me lol.

Just to clarify base training. is it train at zone 2 most of the time to increase your base? If you are short on time what do you think of sweet spot training which is about 85 to 90% of your threshold for 2x16minutes with 4 minutes recovery?
