Kakarangahake Gorge, located between Paeroa and Waihi is said to be the most scenic section of the Hauraki Rail Trail and it's been on our bucket list for a while now.
This 7km section of track boasts some pretty beautiful scenery, 2 old bridges and an old railway tunnel that is just over 1 kilometer long!
Join us in this weeks video as we depart from Waikino, cycling through the gorge and taking a look at the incredible mining history along the way. We also head back to our base camp at the Bowentown Beach Holiday park a short drive from the gorge.

I enjoyed your Bay of Plenty break. I'm glad you got some fine weather. I love the Karangahake Gorge walking tracks. The river pools are wonderful on hot days too. It's only 40 minutes drive from my home and even comes with a great cafe! Dickey Flat, up the Waitawheta River valley has a lovely DOC cash only campsite beside the river but maybe not in holiday season when it's very popular. The girls might be a bit small yet to camp beside a river.

Thanks for sharing your life with us. All that mining is very interesting. Here in NE Ohio we had our first frost for the fall/winter season. 35F this morning. But the sun is shining.

Home tomorrow after three great weeks at Kaiteriteri. Thanks to you guys for putting us onto winter over stay there. Great bunch of people in camp - bit of an exodus this weekend. Already booked in for next year😄😄

So many DOC attractions closed around the country, urs becoming quite concerning. Oparara Arche was closed, chasm creek walk, blue pools bridges both closed, plus lots of other little trails we've tried to do... that windows walk is very cool.

Yeh interesting aye! And Cathedral Cove is closed too right! With no opening date in sight. Shame that arch was shut!

That's such an interesting area. It's like Waiuta and the Brunner mine combined. It's disappointing to see more DOC managed tracks throughout the country closed 😢 A bit of rain, Gizmo not impressed aye

Haha he never looks impressed. Yeh but if a shame about those tracks being closed, tempting to jump the fence but maybe not in front of the kids haha

Yeh I bet! Nah I don’t think you are allowed to. There are “public gold fossicking” sites in the South Island where you can pan for gold or have a small sluice setup but there are only a handful of those sits unfortunately 😞
