The ice did crack right under us. Ice does that. However we were hamming it up a bit for the camera, perhaps to amuse people from warmer climes ;-) A few days before we'd watched a TV programme about how easily people can be led to do stupid things if there are others doing the same. There were some large holes in the ice through which it'd be easy to fall if you were daft enough to skate towards them, but like everyone else in this case we aimed for where it was 10-15 cm thick. A few cracks don't mean that it suddenly sinks.
