My husband and I are right there! He turns 80 next month and I "am not far behind". We discovered trikes while searching for mobility assists. We have had our trikes since mid May and are now addicts. With increasingly limited walking range, the trikes have been a God-send, giving us a new life with expanding opportunities. What a find!!
I bought a recumbent Trike last month (Greenspeed GT20) and I am "only" 48 but I bought it in order to pull a bicycle cart or caravan with it. The amazing thing is, that recumbent trike are fun for so many people. Fast racing trikes for younger people, easier upright trikes for elderly people eventually. To me, the recumbent trike sits well next to my normal roadbikes (and knowing I can keep cycling with recumbent trikes when I hit 70-80 years is very valuable on itself.
I’m 76 and have the typical joint and arthritis problems typical of someone my age. Within the last year some fantastic bike trails were built next to were I live. I said to myself if you don’t use these you’re an idiot. I got a recumbent trike the beginning of the summer. I take off between 6 and 7 AM ( it’s very hot and humid where I live) do 4 miles, come home and start my day. I feel physically and psychologically much better than when I was sitting on my can during COVID and couldn’t get to a gym. Plus riding my trike is a lot more fun than going to a gym. Now I ride my trike past the gym.
Ha! I know just what you mean, Mary Ann! On the days I get out and ride, I feel so much better the rest of the day. Also, like you, most of my cycling motivation was due to the fact that I live next to a fantastic trail system. Without those bike trails, I don't think I would've really been too enthusiastic about cycling/triking. Oh, Yeah- I can understand the gym in the middle of a rainy winter, but why anyone would opt to run or ride indoors on a treadmill/exercise bike when you have the chance to breath fresh air is beyond me. :) Keep on riding, and thanks for watching!
While I am not the age of your parents I encountered a hip issue when I was 48 that made riding 2 wheels very painful and I stopped riding. At 50 I stumbled on a Catrike at a local shop, did not even know such things existed. Bought it on the spot and I am still riding that same trike today, 10 years later. Good for your parents!

I was a dedicated upright rider and also”stumbled” upon a guy riding a catrike on the Cape Cod Canal 5 years ago. I peppered him with questions, took a test ride…..as all trike owners are quick to explain the contraptions and eager to let you ride and join the club. One night at home doing research on the computer and a next day purchase. I have two Catrikes, love them both and ride 150 miles per week 52 weeks a year, here in New England and for four winter months in Florida. I am 69 pushing 70 and in the best shape of my entire adult life. The discovery of recumbent trike riding has changed my life. I hope to ride them forever.
Penny, so inspired by your story. Thank you. I am recovering from a double tib/fib leg fracture 2 years ago and knee and neck arthritis issues from sports and life. I am in my 50s and this trike has saved and I know will extend our lives. My husband has erosive arthritis which made traditional cycling no longer possible. He also has back issues and we are like two kids in a candy store. I get so emotional thinking about our second chance. Trikes have been life changing for us. My husband says his butt finally doesn’t hurt and feels better than sitting on the couch. We are believers and now riding every minute we can. No pain even after riding 8 hours. Oh my, I wish my parents could have had this opportunity. Touring and sight seeing in a rolling lawn chair is heavenly to me. Safe and happy riding to all you lovelies. ❤
Inspirational. I will add a bit of my story. I am 84. About a month ago it was suggested that I ride a friend's trike. I had a total knee replacement 12 years ago. I had a fear of riding on two wheels. After riding the friend's trike I did a lot of research about trikes. I watched many webinars on RU-vid. I did some internet shopping. Two weeks ago I purchased a Tadpole trike. I have been riding it nearly every day. I also swim every Sunday and go to the local YMCA for machine and free weight lifting. The weight lifting I have done for many years. Covid-19 slowed that activity for about a year. I encourage others in their 70s and 80s to remain as active as possible. Remember the old saying, "If you don't use it, you will lose it." Keep active.
Great advice sir. 👍. Getting a set of knees on July 14, 2022. It's been needed for the past 13 years. I had to wait until the magic age of 50. I will be 52 on August 20th. I guess I will be enjoying rehabilitation for my birthday 🎂 and getting back to my Recumbent shortly after or as soon as the staples are out. Slow and steady but.... I also retire the same day as my surgery. I will do something else for my next retirement but not for a year. Going to enjoy my new knees. Thanks for the inspiration Sir.
My son suffered a major brain bleed three years ago, got operated on, coma for one month, then all kinds of rehab. He is fighting back and progressing well, but balance is an issue, so we bought him a trike. Long story short, I bought a trike, so did my wife and we rode 1000 miles last year. Great invention. Heartwarming! I’m 73 and just started riding a Catrike. I love it, and was willing to make the investment because I’m planning to ride as long as I can, hopefully at least 15 years. We’ll get a trike for my husband after he has hip and knee replacements so we can ride together.

Thats a great thing you do for your parents mate , its a pity more of the older folk on our little planet do not know of and are not able to experience recumbent trikes for many reasons , i`m sure it would add to quality of life and extend their time . All the best to you and your parents .

Hey, Paul! Glad to hear you're still able to get out there! But since you've been a cyclist since you were 42, you've had a long time to train yourself to endure pain. Last week I went out for a ride on what's now considered a "vintage" bike, which is just the kind of bike you and I were riding when we started out as cyclists. Once upon a time, I was flexible enough for this thing, but I was sure suffering on that ride. Makes you glad you have a trike. :)
My dad is 84 and I purchased a recumbent trike for him because his balance was not as good as it used to be, he loved riding my cycle so this was the alternative to giving up cycling. He prefers the trike and uses it regularly. Win win for him and me.
I got a trike after bypass surgery 15 yrs ago. I rode it everywhere & lost 35 lbs, enough to get on the bike & ride trails. Recently I went back to the recumbent for road rides. Not sure I would use it for bikepacking, as dragging gear up a hill would likely destroy my knees.
Another option would be an ebike. Was unable to walk for a while after paralysis. When I was finaly able to get out of a wheelchair to stand, unable to walk yet, got an ebike to gradually build my strength , fitness and mobility in the legs. Also used a bicycle connected to a turbo trainer.
My wife is 70 and I'm not far behind and we've been riding our terra trikes for over 10 years. We have flat land and can go often hopefully into our 80s like your dad. Nice video thanks
Cool! I remember back around ten years ago when you didn't see many trikers. These days (at least in this area), it looks like folks are catching on to how much fun they are. :)
I’m 67, overweight, and have knee and back issues. I have been losing weight and am thinking about rewarding myself withe a recumbent trike as a reward for losing 50 lbs. this video is quite encouraging and inspiring.
@@bikestrikesrazors Update: I bought a Greenspeed GT-20 in May of 2022. I ride almost every day, and I love it. I am down to 190 lbs. from 273 lbs. I’ve lost more than twice the weight of the trike itself. I will be 70 next month.
Very positive video, I shared it on my fb so that my friends could see it too. A lot them are at the age where they don't feel safe on a bicycle so I hope that they get inspired by this. Thanks for posting it. I don't see that helmet wearing is an issue, the only time that your parents might need one is when they are getting in or out of the trike. They're not likely to fall out of the trike while riding so the risks of head injury is minimal I would say, unlike a bicycle. I admit that it is always better to be safe, but I'd trust their judgement if it makes them happy.
Cycling is good, low impact exercise on the old body. I've cycled pretty constant since I got my first bicycle in 1946 after World War II. I turned 85 in mid September and moved to a Territrike a few months ago. I pedal three days each week, about 15 miles total.
I am 42 this year and while I can still use my upright bike. I have been looking at a trike as a future investment in my health this was a great video 👍
Honestly after seeing how effortlessly your father gets around in his trike it would be hard to tell he has any issue getting around off the trike. As a guy in his early 20s I gotta say your father's trike riding looks a lot more effortless than my bike riding. Great content as always, keep up the great work!
Something to really think about for the people who still ride 2 wheel bikes. Take a mirror and look between your legs and see the Bruising it will scare the life out of you. My dad told me that when I was 40, I have tried over 40 seats and still got bruising, now with my Diabetes, Heart ❤ problems created by MAC Disease so blood thinners or slickers, 2 pins and 6 screws in my lower back, both wrist operated on for Corporal Tunnel, right ankle pined and fused. Also the older I get the balance thing is a small problem. Also not starring at the ground anymore and no more shoulder and neck problems, I wish I had bought my Catrike Dumont along time ago. There is so much more comfort and enjoyment riding a Trike. Stopping along the ride to sit and enjoy the view with out putting your feet on the ground to keep your balance.
For most, as we get older, we no longer want to stretch to provide the range of motion needed. Just squat down and stay there for 3 minutes - the benefits are numerous. It help the knees, hips and lower back. Look it up on RU-vid. To make any progress, this must be done daily - it becomes a way of life/, along with practicing Chi.
Hope you don't mind but see the pensioner who's struggling with getting up and down into his trike there are available trike extension bars that fit to the existing bar ends that will help him to get up and down himself . Although he will still need help to step over the boom . I'm 59 so I'm not a spring chicken either.
I am 63. I started on my Catrike about 7 years ago after a back injury that made riding a diamond frame impossible. I'm planning on riding this thing into the ground, as long as I can. I hope that I can make into my 80's. Good for your parents and good for you for getting them out there. Now onto the second part of my post. That is the coolest community I have ever seen. So you can taxi right to the door of your house. Wow. Love it. I live on Vancouver Island BC. I thought it was pretty cool when people have cabins on the lake and land their personal float planes right there. This has that beat hands down. PS, new subscriber.
Hi Wornout and glad you found triking! That's my plan as well. Hopefully, I can wear this trike out and even a few more before I'm done. :) Yep, the airpark is pretty cool. There's a bench at the end of the airstrip where you can just sit and watch some of the strange contraptions land and take off. A few folks have the one seater whirlybirds. My father is 87, and he continues to be active, if only for spite! He still has his bike from decades ago, and rides it occasionally. The thing is, as with many elderly, he could have much increased mobility, with some regular treatment, but he chooses not to get it. Several years ago, I treated him twice (30 minutes each) to increase his mobility. Before, he could barely go up a flight of stairs, holding onto the railing. Immediately after treatment, he could walk up like normal. Movement is key, but with age, it's more than just walking...
@@bikestrikesrazors Yes, he definitely noticed. He just likes to be difficult sometimes. He is doing some of the exercises I've recommended, though it is still sporadic. I'll keep suggesting the treatment, but I won't push too hard - sometimes, he just likes to be difficult. :-/
Outstanding! I love this. My father passed at the age of 74, but he was an avid bike rider his whole, and he is why all his kids are cyclists. My mother had balance issues and could only ride a trike. My father would have loved to ride a recumbent trike with my mother. As for my wife and I, we hope to be riding our Recumbents for as long as your parents. BTW - You're a good son. Cheers

good on them.. the real danger on trikes is getting hit by cars.. So make sure you are visible. FLAGS, good bright HEAD LIGHT AND TAIL LIGHT. And take corners slow. I wish i could afford to buy my dad a recumbent trike. He and his wife bought bikes, then never rode them because they feared falling. He is 87.
I’m a young whippersnapper at 67 and I made a decision to get a so-called “girl’s” bike. Several back surgeries ago, I realized I can’t easily lift my legs off the ground very much. But my balance is still good. So I got a step-thru two-wheeler with a class one motor. It gives me the extra “push” I need so I don’t have to walk up even modest hills. I figure maybe by the time I hit 80 I’ll opt for a trike instead. But I’m loving my electric “girl’s” bike too much now.
Sounds like a great solution, Boris! A lot of folks don’t understand the many benefits of a “step through” bike, but they’re very functional and not just for girls. Guys are the ones that are most at risk for getting their “family jewels” smashed by a top tube anyway. :)

Hey, Jim! On one of the trips that Jeff and Barbara took back to the U.S., they both tried out the trikes in the court out in front of the house. Barbara had previously fallen on a bike while they were riding and hurt (broke?) her arm, so Jeff thought that the trikes would be a good solution for them. Barbara wasn't having any of it, and put the kibosh on the whole thing. :)
I'm surprised no mention of stand-up aids for seniors. Many of us don't have younger relatives on hand to assist our getting in and out of the recumbent trike After I caught my foot getting off and took a tumble, I had my dealer special-order and install padded bars on each rail of my Catrike Villager, mounted in front of the brake grips, which are not designed for support. They're an immense help. It's like, I wouldn't walk down a flight of stairs without one hand on the railing. As delivered, no recumbent I've seen provides something to steady oneself with when mounting or dismounting. The recumbent is such a great idea for seniors. Considering how much more secure my upgrade makes this balance-challenged octegenarian feel, it's a mystery to me why support bars seems to be an afterthought.

@@bikestrikesrazors You're welcome--it seems to be a well-kept secret. Also, the prices (a search for 'stand-up aids for trikes' will locate them) are really high, some approaching $300, no doubt small production runs, due to low demand. (Low sales since few know about them--a Catch-22) But my investment in the trike was worthless without adding the safety aids, so I bit the bullet and paid up. I'm not sure where my dealer got the ones he installed, but I don't think they came from Catrike. If I had my way, these safety aids would be manadatory standard equipment on every trike sold, like seatbelts in cars. Then the cost of production would go way down. Anyone who didn't like them on his or her trike could take them off, just don't throw them away--if you live long enough, you'll be glad you have them.

Handicapped, arthritic, balance impaired, 6'-4" & 380-LBS here. No sport enthusiast here, but "linebacker size" person. HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET ON/OFF of my several tadpoles for WELL over a decade now! Ride ONLY "Hase" delta-planform trikes now. Hase recumbents can be readily sat on Side-Saddle and one leg swung over to opposite peddle. Even a wheelchair occupier can readily enter/exit a delta planform recumbent. Now own 4 Hase trikes. 3 Lepus models and 1 Kettwiesel. Bought new 2020 Lepus with HIGHEST seat offered. 16-inch front wheels on two of my Lepus' offers lower swing-over frame height. Tires are suspension. Delta planform trikes have TWO wheels UNDER rider for both increased ride quality and greater comfort. I also do not need RENDUNDANT steer wheels on straight-as-railroad-tracks bicycle trails. Been riding recumbents since about 1990. Never see anyone riding other than for sightseeing, touring and exercising. "Tip-over arguers" please note that ALL Off-Road Professional Competition Jeeps are jacked WAY, WAY UP in height! Tadpoles ARE superior sportscars..., but vast majority NEVER ride them as such. I use Shimano STEPS (E-assist). Rohloff hubs, and 2WD too. 2020 Lepus is my retirement gift to myself! Gary J. Great video and you are a great son for doing this with your parents. I'm 10 years younger than your Dad and have been riding what I call a hard tail mountain bike. My concern is that my balance is not what it was. That being said, I am not riding much at all and really miss it and I am seriously considering a trike. My question for you is, what brand and model is the trike your Dad is riding.
Hey, Bill! In the video, my Dad is riding a circa 2005 ICE T, which would be the equivalent of today’s ICE Adventure, although the Adventure has some style and feature upgrades. I’ve known a few folks that have gone over to trikes due to balance issues, and they’ve all been happy they made the move. The only real drawback is the expense but if you can hunt your local Craigslist or the Bentrider Online classifieds, sometimes you can find a real bargain. Thanks very much for watching!

I am 60 and I still ride an upright bike, but I have noticed that if I ride over 15 miles or so some things get sore or hurt. I have heard that one can ride much longer and further on this style of trike with the added benefit of looking ahead more and up instead of down at the road. I definitely want to try one of these.
See if you can find a local dealer to give it a try, Garfgo. Indeed, you'll be able to put many, many more miles on a trike without the pain issues that come along with standard diamond frame bikes.
My my, thats great dad can still pump without a motor assist, thats great, Wish I could, I had to go to a motor assist in 2011 of course Im riding 18 and twenty mile rides ay a time and making it a 5 hour trip out of it usually. Thanks for sharing.😉😎🇦🇹
Yep, your rides are much longer than what they're doing. I've asked them about adding motors to their trikes, but they don't seem interested in taking longer rides ( It would be more fun if they were able to take some longer rides with us!).
@@bikestrikesrazors Yes trike are keeping many of us alive much longer as far as how long we would have lived otherwise ,We are the experimental group, I had to leave my two-wheeler in 2008 I could no longer sit on it and wear a brace at the same time when I finished a ride I was in such pain, I know the track has extended my life. @@bikestrikesrazors Ive bought four, I must be crazy Im thinking bought a road but the angle was to dramatic four my spine, and was causing me pain, I bought a ICE adventure and its been great, bought a KMX trike in kit form and made a custom build of it but have been using it as a spare. bought a sunseeker fat tad 4 inch wheels hope to put a motor on it. Hi Jackie! Mom wears a pair of Keene sandals with SPD cleats built in for cycling. Dad has a pair of Shimano bike shoes with the same cleats to "clip in".
Well, I prefer ride a trike over a "normal" 2 wheel bike. I am in good health at 51 years old, so I am triking, because I love the stability of a trike. Also no saddle pain, the shortest braking distance and excellent rear view of the mirrors are the advantages of a trike over a bike. Sure, I still own 2 bikes: a Dutch city bike for doing groceries and a folding bike, which I can take with me for free inside the train.
Oh, yeah, lots of reasons to go with a trike over a two wheeled bike, but like you said, there are still some reasons for taking out a two-wheeler. Thanks for watching!
Hi, Yousif! Where are you located? In many areas you can find recumbent trike shops that will sell them locally. If not, some companies will ship them for your local bike shop to assemble. They can be very expensive, but some companies, like Terra-Trike, have some not-too-expensive entry level models. It's also a good idea to check locally on the used market, as sometimes they show up used for a good price. Thanks for watching!

@@yousifismail3180 They can cost a lot more than that. Depending on the brand, you could be looking at around 6k for a new trike! But on the secondhand market, some really nice trikes can be found in the $1,500 range.
They both ride the ICE "T". ICE doesn't make that model anymore, but they do make similar touring models like it. The "T" can still be found on the used market. Thanks for watching!
That is an issue, Javier. They do make front handles for trikes which may make getting up a bit easier. I always thought they should design a hydraulic seat that could just lift you out of the trike!
Bein an older American at 71, I know that wearing a helmet can be frustrating; but since this cycling course is in a protected runway, and there is no traffic, then I think that this is a good way. Besides have you ever tried to get your parents to do what you think is good, safe for them? They're giongto do what they think is better and so off goes the helmets. But I do share your concerns...
I noticed that your parents are both wearing street shoes, that is my one fear about trying a trike, what happens if your foot slips off the pedal and hits the ground. I know you can get bike shoes with clips, but I wear size 14W and have not seen them in that size.
Hey, Steamboat! You should be able to find some SPD cleat compatible mountain bike shoes in a size 14. You are correct, I wouldn't ride without being clipped in, and while my parent's shoes may look like street shoes, they're both wearing shoes with SPD cleats and using SPD style clip in pedals. RE, Helmets: You're most likely to fall out when cornering too fast and at the worst get 'gravel rash' on your hand, arm and face, none of which are 'protected' by a cycle helmet. For any collision involving other road users a cycle helmet is about as much use as a 'chocolate fire guard' Would you also want them to wear helmets in an open top car? How about when 'walking', they're old & unsteady on their feet and it's nearly twice the distance to fall so would do more damage. Human beings are inherently unstable while the recumbent trike is inherently stable. Leave them be and let them enjoy riding for as long as they can.
@@bikestrikesrazors I ride an ICE trice like your parents ones, except mine is the "Q"(quick) and theirs are "T"(touring). It's nice to see these older 2006-2009 models still being used. Stay safe and keep enjoying the cycling.
Please, please, PLEASE, everyone over 60-tell me how you’re transporting your trikes! I drive a Prius and have to drive to any bike path. I have trouble lifting anything heavy. HOW SHOULD I TRANSPORT MY TRIKE? Thanks.
Hey, Patricia! I think you'll have more luck by going over to Bentrider Online and posting the question on their main forum or trike forums. As far as lifting the trike, they also make ramps so you can roll your trike into your vehicle, but that would only work if you can fit a non-folding trike in there. Again, ask on Bentrider Online and I'm sure you'll get lots of helpful answers.
Hi Guy! My parents both have the ICE "T" which was ICE's more upright touring trike. They no longer make that model, but you can find them on the used market. A good price for a used one in nice shape should be around $1,500.00
BTW, most trike companies make a touring model. :) As always, the best thing to do would be for your wife to try them out and see what feels best for her.
Like everything mate , people weigh up the risks for themselves , i`m old and grew up in a time when no one wore helmets except motor bikers because it is law , i might add i was a bit of a dare devil and had many accidents and quiet a few big ones in my younger days but , i must be lucky because i came out mostly unscathed every time .. But if you have ever been in a brain injury ward and got to see some of the peoples injuries that also weighed up the risks , and unfortunately luck was not on their side , it really is an eye opener and food for thought .
We have our fair share of bad roads and (very) nasty traffic around here. We are lucky that we found some nice roads in the area and there's a bike trail to avoid traffic. This video was shot in a quiet residential neighborhood with little traffic, and they keep the roads up well.
I wish cyclists would stop rabbiting on about helmet wearing. I feel this is stopping mass participation on bikes. In countries such as the Netherland where there are lots of people riding bikes very few people ride with helmets. It's a safe mode of transport.
Hey, Stuart! Yep, much safer in those European countries where they have a long history of cycling infrastructure and drivers see cyclists as potentially their grandparents, parents and siblings going to the store or school or work. Here in the U.S., cyclists are usually seen as "Jerks playing in the road with their toys, getting in my way!"
