Cycling Southern Italy in Winter: Part Two // World Bicycle Touring Episode 15

The second half of our trip across Southern Italy varied between beautiful towns, challenging route finding, and at times unpleasant highway riding. We continued on from Rotondella, riding through the mountains before descending to the southern coast and struggling to follow a GPX route that didn't really exist. We rode through Tropea, Scilla, and other coastal towns as we made our way towards Villa San Giovanni and the ferry to Sicily.
In this video, we traveled 302 miles (486 km) over nine days from February 1st to February 9th. This video covers miles 7,002 to 7,304 (11,268 km to 11,754 km) of our around the world bicycle tour.
Other than strong winds, the weather was quite pleasant despite the season with daytime temperatures varying between 40f-60f (4c-15c).

I absolutely love your videos. I have gone back and watched every episode in this series since I came across this one. You guys should make a video on how you find your campsite. I have wanted to go on a bike tour for a long time, but one of the things that has held me back was how to find a place to sleep every night. Stay safe!

Thanks so much, we're really glad you've been enjoying the series! Some areas are fairly easy to find wild camping while others are more challenging. A lot of it comes down to risk tolerance, which is a big reason why we hesitate to make a video about it. There's always a chance we'll get woken up in the middle of the night by someone, even though we do our best to stay far away from other people. Ultimately wild camping carries some risk and the legality is kind of a gray area. Since the conditions vary a lot from place to place and everyone has different comfort levels, it's not something we necessarily want to advocate for. It's a personal choice that's worked well for us, but may not be right for everyone. That being said, if you have any questions about specifics, feel free to shoot us an email!

Another awesome video team - Have you been using Warm Showers at all? Of course we've only ever see you camping so I was wondering if you ever link up with people to stay?

We used it several times in the summer and had great experiences, but we were more hesitant to use it during the omicron wave. Now that cases are coming back down we will probably use it more often again. We do really enjoy the freedom of camping though!

Não usamos mais shorts de bicicleta acolchoados. Nós os usávamos quando começamos, mas agora estamos acostumados a andar sem eles. Ter um selim com o ajuste correto é muito importante para o conforto a longo prazo.

im diggin the ride but as a californian, i gotta complain about something . if you watch the video, every time you say its a pretty view its usually your mug ! how about a little more scenery and less you . otherwise my view is my garage sitting on my trainer, so help me escape buddy .

Very inspiring video, thanks for sharing it. I see you both crossing high grass areas with your bare skin exposed, aren't you worried by ticks? Ticks are pretty much the most dangerous animal you can meet out there, one undetected bite can have serious consequences for the rest of your life. Sorry for sounding alarming, I just mean be helpful. Enjoy your trip 🙂

We're glad you enjoy the videos! This time of year the tick populations are very low, although we still do regular tick checks just in case! Neither of us has seen a single one since arriving in Europe. Andrew used to work outdoors in Florida and would regularly have 5-10 ticks a day, and had Lyme disease once, so we're very cautious. In the summer we would definitely not being going through the tall grass without long pants.

Do you have a map route or the GPX of the routes you've taken in Italy? I'm trying to figure out a route later this summer that will probably begin in Lyon France (following Eurovelo 5) and goes through Switzerland and into Italy but after that IDK what route to take. Any tips or advice would be very much appreciated.

I see from your list, you ride with a Rohloff internal hub. Have you always ridden with Rohloff? If not, why the change?

We did several tours with regular derailleur based bikes, but when we decided to go on a two year (or more) trip, we researched Rohloffs and ultimately chose to build our bikes around them. The main factor was the lower maintenance, Rohloff hubs need an oil change every 5,000km but are otherwise maintenance free, with perfect shifting every time. Chains last longer on a Rohloff because it's more similar to a single speed and doesn't stretch between gears. Our first chain lasted 10,000km. Cassette wear isn't a factor either, the single sprocket on the Rohloff lasts a very long time - we have 14,000kms on ours and it's still looking good, plus we can flip it to double the lifespan. All that said, derailleur systems are tried and true, and most importantly, easy to replace almost anywhere. Fingers crossed that our Rohloffs last for the roughly 60,000kms we have planned!

We had tubeless tires for years when we lived in the USA desert southwest, but our current tire/rim combo isn't tubeless ready and locating tire sealant on a long trip didn't seem ideal. Currently we're both running Stan's inside our tubes or using Slime tubes, which work well for everything but the big metal spikes we've encountered in the last two videos 😢. Three total punctures in 8,500 miles isn't bad though!
