Cycling to school; Culemborg (Netherlands) [149]

Hundreds of thousands of children cycle to school every morning in the Netherlands. Kids cycling up to 15km one way are no exception. The roads and streets are literally full of cycling children for about one hour. The "cycle highway" from Geldermalsen to Culemborg is one such road. Hundreds of children going to school take the same safe route here. They form spontaneous groups and the closer they get to school the larger the groups become. When the school bell rings and all the children are in class, the cycle highway looks as deserted as it was before the kids went to school.

Wow. We rode bikes to school in Norway, too, despite steep hills, but that was short of two kilometres. Can't imagine cycling 15 km twice every school day. Granted, the Dutch don't have too many hills, but still. That's impressive.

We have wind, and that’s worse than hills. You get used to hills pretty fast. But never get used to head wind. In the Tour de France the Dutch used to excel in the mountains, because mountains are nothing compared to wind.

Notice the lighting on the bicycle path. It is closer to the ground than the lighting for motorized traffic and it is spaced closer together as well. This contributes to the safety and well-being of those cycling during off hours.

I've cycled thro the Netherlands, twice. Its a bike paradise, the young people get a bit of exercise built into their daily routine without knowing it. Its a win win for society. Here in the UK, a kid would most likely get run off the road by cars being driven by parents on the so called "school run".

This just popped up and it's 10 years old. These kids are lucky to have such a pleasant cycle to school. I cycled to school in the 70s in Scotland. It was first down a long hill, once a man shouted at me, Slow down, I'm trying to get past you! Cycling home up the hill on a wet windy day was less fun. I must have looked a bit strange, long hair, flared trousers with one leg rolled up and a bike with 16inch balloon tyres. Some of my friends had part time jobs delivering shopping or meat from a butcher shop, all on specially made bikes with big baskets.

This makes me happy but also sad. Where I live (North Shore, Auckland) people never ride bikes and people always take cars and busses. It's sad because I and a few other people in my school are the only ones who bike and everyone else takes a car or bus. This looks so good. Almost makes me want to move there. I wish more people bikes in the community. It's kind of hard though because we have loads of hills. Everyone looks so happy but kids at my school are always depressed looking. The thing is, no one in my community encourages biking.

@wanttoread5 Not many 16, 18 year olds in the US can afford cars either; mostly it's their parents buying them one, which is why at least half of the 17-18 year olds in my high school drove to school everyday. 21 year olds, maybe, although they probably have loads of loans from college alone. Such is the culture in this country. I don't know about anyone else, but I personally feel that 16 (or 14 in some states) is a little young to be operating machinery such as a car. 18 would be better.

It does. I'm not even Dutch but Belgian. And even I started cycling to school every day in primary school. First with my parents, and from year 2-3 on I went alone. I couldn't imagine it any other way. It taught me how to cycle really well, how to behave in traffic, how to do things by myself,... Whenever I wanted to go play with a friend from school, I could just cycle there. If something was needed from the local shop, I could cycle there if need be. In high school, I was the one responsible for being in class on time. And after a chat and some shenanigans with my friends, I could decide when I went home. And on Fridays from 15-16y old on that would be after a couple of beers... So yes, it taught me independance. And it gives huge freedom not always having to rely on someone else to get anywhere as a kid/teen... I couldn't imagine how different my youth would have been if I had to rely on mom and dad for everything.

The Dutch are used to cycle from the age of 3 or 4. And therefore have the physical condition to cycle long(er) distances. But everybody is different, regretterely not everybody is blessed with a good health and/or physical condition...

Jep! To walk around with a hockey mask all day will result in a short stay psychiatric hospital. And wearing a condom all day doesn't improve your health either. During normal all day cycling, we do not wear helmets, only when racing or those who have more risk of falling like very old and very young. And we do not wear Lycra in public, should be banned, only made available for those who pass a body checkup.

- But how do schoolchildren get to school during snowfall, blizzard or just rainy, frosty days with sub-zero temperatures - aren't there enough such days a year?!
@marcvanderwee
@marcvanderwee Год назад
They normally cycle in such conditions as well. But particular during the last few years we did not have that much snow, or cold conditions in general.. Also adults that are used to cycle all year will continue cycling during winter conditions.
@Siranoxz
@Siranoxz Год назад
We have no sub zero or blizzard weathers here in the Netherlands lol. We do have a lot of wind and rain, and when its cold then we have a thing called waterkou.

I have cycled to primary school (4km , twice up and down from age 4) for 8 years and to highschool (11.5km) for 7 years and I always went by bike. That was back in the 80s when every winter one could skate on the canals, with 2 'elfstedentocht' events... I can't remember classes to be cancelled for storms. That is basically the only ground to skip school or classes, because of the risk of falling trees, branches and roof tiles etc.. In the school program there is always 1 day planned for 'Ice/Snow day free' .. I liked the frost a lot more than the regular wet chilly 'waterkou' days in winter. water cold gets into your bones and is hard to dress against. Frost is merely putting on more or thicker layers of clothes ... I quite hate the rain in winter here ...
@jannetteberends8730
@jannetteberends8730 6 месяцев назад
Rain doesn’t matter. I’m a retired teacher, and on rainy days you had a wet soaked class the first hour. 😀 Until the eighties, we still had winters, but that didn’t matter. The kids just biked to school.

Agreed. Don't really like them. Especially ones with gears they only make it difficult to ride. Completely unnecessary for travelling from A to B. And city bikes actually have space for storage/a second passenger at the back too.
@irrelevance3859
@irrelevance3859 4 года назад
@@yellfire they are but not for making your way around. Like their name they're for mountains/off road. Not on road. Unless you're those sports/lycra cyclists. A City bike is all you need for the road. (like the ones in this video)

For any Trump supporters out there.. Please notice the wind turbines...without piles of dead birds, as Trump claims. But, what a civilised way for kids to start the day...independently, without “mummy in her 4 x 4”. Great....
@benjaminvg8018
@benjaminvg8018 Год назад
I hate Trump and consider myself an environmentalist or at least a very environment-aware person but wind turbines are absolute nonsense in most cases and yes they do kill a lot of birds, it's a fact. They consume a lot of space and a lot of material (steel, copper, concrete, etc) for a very poor result in energy generated. Plus, it's not a dispatchable energy. Our only solution is a loooot of energy sobriety that has to be planned politically starting with the rich people and nuclear energy mixed with solar and hydroelectricity where it makes sense. But first, sobriety which means no more RU-vid or RU-vid in 240p :).

I can not think or a rational explanation why someone would dislike this vedeo. May they are just trolling youtube for laughs. Automobiles make people lazy and fat . Automobiles stink especially desil engines . Motorcycles are loud and dangerous . Running is hard on the knees and joints and walking takes too long . The only think more fun than bicycles is sex and tormenting prudish people with extremely loud Jimi Hendrix music .
