if you have really hilly terrain get an ebike to tow it. hydraulic disks are a must to stop the extra mass controlled and safely (not having kids myself as i am only 18 but these are what i assume should be usefull)

I’ve got a Topeak seat on a rack and a Burley trailer that I use together with my two little ones. Today is the smaller one’s first birthday. Before he could hold himself up, I put him in his car seat in the trailer. I also recently added fenders to my bike and now I’m less concerned with showering the trailer and kid with sand, mud, wet, etc. In addition to all of this, after getting a trailer, I do almost all of my errands (grocery shopping) in town with my bike and leave the car in the garage. One other thought, if you’ve got a really beautiful bike that you’re concerned about the paint job on you’ll want to get some of that clear paint protector vinyl business that I can’t remember the name of.

i'm the only hardcore cyclist of the fam -- so i usually load the wife and kids bike on the car - and then i ride out a couple hours earlier and get in a really hard effort and then we meet up for the family spin at a planned location /time.

Two tips I have found helpful with four kids: tri-cages behind the saddle help bring along extra beverages where children can’t spill them and combo-pedals that are flat on one side with MTB cleats on the other. Look GeoTreker pedals are excellent because they also have safety blinking lights

My late parents were from the WWII generation. While they got me a bike for my 5th birthday, and replacements as I grew up, and always encouraged me to ride it all over, they never owned a bike themselves and I never saw them ride one. I fondly remember riding around with my friends, but never my parents! I think for their generation, bike riding was just not considered an activity for adults. I’m in my 50’s now and still love long distance cycling for the fun of the outdoors, the exercise and as a substitute for my car when feasible.

When I was Connor's age, a long, long time ago, I put a seat over the real wheel, which device is likely no longer legal, and took each of my sons one at a time for a ride. They are in their 40s now and not only remember it, but still talk about it. One of my better ideas.

From my years of experience with kids in trailers. Helmets on the kids. Screen or windshield in place to protect from rocks and mud from rear tire. Keep distances relatively short....if you need to wear your full kit then its probably too long a ride for the rest of the family. Drinks and stops frequently. It can get hot in the trailer. Watch for even small road hazards.....potholes and big cracks or curbs are pretty harsh in an unsuspended trailer. Check behind frequently to make sure your passengers are happy. Remember how wide you are with a trailer....when in doubt walk the rig. Have fun and don't force the trip if the kids aren't happy to go.

Listen to their concerns etc, depending on age, in terms of stopping (lots of it), etc. set goals. One summer, we set a goal as a family to ride 100 miles. We kept track on a poster on our fridge. The goal got us to explore all sorts of parts in our state and kept us motivated to keep going. We’d only ride like 10+ miles or less per ride.

There’s such a range of abilities in my family - but we had the best ever ride on our holiday in Northumberland. One normal MTB/29er, one e-bike, one tandem. My eldest (14) wanted to ride the tandem with my youngest (11) and they enjoyed it so much we had to do it again 3 days later!

We started with a single Burley trailer, then bought a double Burley when we had our second kid, then bought a Weehoo for the older kid, and we finally bought an Xtracycle for our now 7 and 3 year old to ride on the back. They love it, and my wife and I love it, because the weight distribution is better and the interaction with the kids is amazing. Always remember, family rides are not training rides, it's okay to stop and play, pick flowers, have a snack (always bring snacks, no matter how "short" the ride is planned to be), or just hang out and observe the world around you.

Thank you for the video ! I agree with all points raised and I have been taking my sons (1 and 4 years old) to day care and school often in our double trailer. I would add that it is always best to close the front net on the trailer as it help stopping bugs, dirt and small rock getting to the little ones ! Oh yes... and sunglasses for all ! Ride safe and make it as enjoyable for them as for you !

Great video! I would add, though, that it can be important to match bikes if family members are of different ability levels. I ride a relaxed, folding bike with my wife and friends because, otherwise, I have this terrible tendency to half-wheel them, so we got me a bike that is slower than my reg'lar road bike (and it folds, so I can stuff it in the trunk, no problem, which I've also loved because I can take a bike everywhere, now.) One of the weirdest things I see around here is families riding "together" but the man (and it is usually the man) is up ahead unaware that his co-riders are miserable behind them (to judge by the faces they're pulling.) So, if some people are strong riders while others are less so, that's something to watch for.

My big tip is that the sooner you can get them on two wheels, the better off you are. Once they're used to balance bikes and you can move them to a pedal trailer, it's incredibly easy to transition them to a proper bicycle and skip training wheels or trikes completely.

Loving seeing Conor getting out on the bikes with the rest of family over the last few weeks. It’s been the story of my Summer too. My son in love with our Adams trailer bike and reaction from everyone to it and the questions I get asked by other parents are lovely. The challenge is he wants to go further every ride which is great. Problem is we are up to 25 miles now which is great dangerously close to "proper ride” territory and it’s quite hard work with the extra weight, especially when the boy is just chillin' not peddling but it we have clocked over 20mph on the flat with littl'un still putting the power down and has to be great training for when I get back on the naked road bike. 🚀 🚴🏻‍♂️

@apm9507
@apm9507 2 года назад
I disagree! Load everything your child wants into the trailer, then you have about 80 pounds of drag to help with leg day! Never fast and tons of exercise! When I pedaled with my son and daughter in the trailer with their stuff, it was exceptional exercise. When I pedaled without the trailer I felt like I was shot out of a cannon. My speed was insane in comparison to the full trailer speed.

As your family grows (in number and in height) it is amazing how much bike equipment you go through... But the two kid trailer we had was the best bit of kiddy kit we ever had, and certainly well worth the investment. And talking of forgiving gearing... when you get to the point when you are pulling one kid on their bike (with a "follow-me") and another is sat on a kiddy seat behind you, you'll need a mullet set up with MTB gearing on the back as its the heaviest thing known to humanity!

I have a Burley trailer. I never turn on the rear light of my bike because I am afraid my soon 2-year old will be blinded by it. I have a rear light on the back of the trailer. An important advice, that I haven't followed myself, is to get a full mudguard, even for dry rides. The seat of the trailer always has sand particles on it after our rides because the net does not catch those. Oh, use the net, because you don't want rocks hitting in their little faces, do you? Finally, don't live in Taiwan, where the trailer is almost useless during the long, hot an humid summer. Sigh... I have a 30-34 as lowest gear. Although our rides have been through the flat riverside bike paths. I'm not sure if I'll ever take her to the mountains. I feel safe riding here, but with her... It's scary.

For short rides, I rock a fatbike with a shotgun top tube seat. No faffing around, and easy to get going. I have cargo racks that hold 5L dry bags on the forks that I stuff towels, extra diapers and snacks, and occasionally a pint for dad in. Usually this is my playground / beach setup. Fat bike is comfortable for the kid, has all terrain / singletrack potential, has MTB gearing for hauling the extra 40 lbs around, and toddlers just think monster trucks tires are cool as hell. The only downside is that the top tube seat is not conducive to sleepy toddlers, so the rides usually have to be short-ish. For the longer rides, or if I'm taking the boy fishing, I'll hitch up the trailer! I bungie cord my rod to the back, and throw a couple lures in a tupperware container. Nothing better than getting the kiddo stoked on bikes from an early age!

Perfect timing, I’m looking at bike seats now for my 14month old. Thanks, brilliant advice. More detail on seats and trailers would be good. I appreciate it would be personal preference but looking at different set ups would be good, I.e front mounted seats, do they work with drop bars? etc.......

I used to take my daughter in the trailer to these local sand hills where we would roll down laughing, I would be in hot water with her mother because of all the sand in her nappies, last weekend she took her boy by bike to the same sand hills and sent me a video of him rolling down...
