5y old: Shouting: look I can ride, forgetting that I didn't know how to stop and using a wall to come to rest. 15y old: Looking at my speed indicator instead of the road ending up whaled on the back of a parked VW Beatle. and so it goes on. How most rides go: Wave at the first three cyclists and get rejected every time Never wave again Magically cyclist number 10 waves but you don't wave because you're in a bad mood from rejection, then feel even worse for being a snob.

A way to avoid is to only unclip your left foot. You can also sit on your top tube that puts you forward enough to stay away from the chain ring. Keep your chain clean. Worse are marks on the front or your shoes from rubbing the front tire.

If you want to try clipless pedals but are worried about it like I am, I got a set that has clips on one side and regular pedal on the other. This makes me feel really confident especially commutting in traffic so I can switch from one to the other as needed where there are no bikeways. I have pulled a fainting goat move twice. Both on back streets where there was no danger of falling into traffic so all ended well. Though got into something scary cause I forgot to check my cleets before riding and one of them had come loose and I couldn't unclip that foot so it is really important to practice unclipping either foot and check your screws periodically.

With the pedals , I would add one thing for beginner riders ; there is a screw at the back of each pedal which adjusts the tension of the spring and makes it easier or harder to unclip . In LHDrive countries it is better to unclip the left foot when stopping as this is closest to the gutter (in built up areas) . If you race , please tighten the tension to avoid accidental unclipping in the sprint.

@@si7273 Very true in my experience. Most bike enthusiasts I've met personally have a strong belief they are "morally superior" than someone who takes a train or owns a car. It seems that sometimes they feel even more malicious towards people with normal bikes. As a casual rider (1-2 times a week for an hour), I've personally seen this and experienced it. I made the clipless fail error as a seasoned cyclist. Ordinarily I was so comfortable on my bike and with my balance I could ride up to lights as they turned red, stay upright until they turned green, never putting foot to floor. I also used to do ballet, an activity where your feet are generally facing to the sides, not parellel. Riding home fro ballet class, legs still not ready to be in line, red light, slow to stop fell straight off. No wobble etc,. just off. Good news, unlike toe grips when you fall off clipess you are not attached to the bike anymore.

When I started cycling some of the cyclists greet me and my body just freeze because I don't know what to respond. After several days of riding outside, some of the cyclist horn at me and greet me at the same time. After several days, I copy that and I slowly greet other cyclist by horning at them (I still can't greet them because of my social anxiety but it's slowly improving), some of them horn back, and some of them don't. Regarding cold weather clothing... if you ride during winter often enough, you build up so much cold resistance, it's crazy. I am cycling in shorts and a single jersey down to -5 Celsius and honestly feel a lot better than doing the same in +20 C. There's just something about cold that really helps to keep moving. Probably improved cooling. My friends (and randoms on the street) who don't have this tolerance at all can not fathom how is it possible, which is always highly amusing.

Even if you are good at normal road bikes and go TT bike, re-train clipping pedals again and integrate more balance work. TT bikes are bad at low speed due to top heavy weight (bottles and mech bag usually in aero positions etc) and you can easily topple over as there is a longer distance down to the handlebars with the brakes making riding slow a bit awkward at first. So train that on grass first.

@SeanBlader

When trying out clipless pedals, I also recommend going out to a grassy field and just falling over onto your shoulder, especially if you're petite like Manon. You'll be surprised how little it hurts, when you're already pretty low to the ground sitting in the saddle. Then the idea is to spread out the impact over as much of your body as possible to reduce damage to a single point of impact. If you're really on the ball you put your arm out, but BENT so that it can slow your descent and not lock your elbow where you can do a lot more damage to sensitive joints.

The worst thing to forget in cold weather is gloves... if your fingers are too cold to operate the brake (that's minutes after they star hurting), you're screwed. Second worst thing is, if your feet get cold (neoprene overshoes, winter shoes or if that doesn't suffice - heat soles come in really handy). long sleves and pants will however help you keep your hands and feet warm, so you might want to bring them as well...

I'm usually too proud to call someone and will instead walk home (once I took an uber, but that was more so because of a schedule constraint). I'm surprised at how frequently I see people getting picked up for punctures. My gut feeling is that it has more to do with their skill level as a mechanic than it does with carrying spares.

When you mention the pedal I allways teach new cyclist to choose a foot to click out when they stop. I see even experience people come in doubt and end up on the side on the road because they stop and then panic on which foot to click out. Then its too late and you tip over

Yes , quite right, always choose the left foot in left hand drive countries and vice versa in RHD countries. Also , a good tip for beginners is too loosen the tension screw at the back of peddle , makes it quite easy at traffic lights.

@youvebeenmilked2893
@youvebeenmilked2893 3 года назад
That’s great, congratulations! Enjoy it! Look up videos on how tubeless tires work! They often have a liquid inside that seals any punctures you get. Carrying an extra tubeless tire is not common, except on long, multi-week adventures perhaps. But what is a little more common is carrying a tube just in case, as you could still add a tube if your tire gets a puncture! 👍 Just remember to check the tire for whatever little sharp rock or glass might have caused it before inserting your tube

Number one I think it's a question? I've been hearing from a few people lately about how they take their change and boil them and water and get all the grease and oil off. They're boiling their chains and hot wax awesome source. Apparently this helps to keep debris from gunking up your chain and makes the chain actually more slippery somehow. But I'm not sure what type of wax they're using? Number two sort of a question. I'm 61 years old and haven't used clips. A couple years ago there was a very well admired bicyclist in our area and his older age a few years older than me. Homeless well respected for histo California and back to the East Coast. He had a few rides too Louisiana and the Garfield Mexico. Florida and back a few times. Anyway to make a long story short. Just a few miles from his home here in Delaware. He was hit by a 92-year-old man driving a car. I had seen him earlier that day before he was hit. He had a brand new Giant bicycle. My thought I guess my. I've always wondered if the clips could have been the downfall when he was hit? Could it be if he were able to be separated from the bicycle at the point of impact. Might he have had a better chance of surviving? I guess I'll really never know the answer to that. But when you get to be 61 my age. I have to ask myself how important our eclipse. I remember the straps of the '70s on pedals. I really think they might be a better alternative.
@youvebeenmilked2893
@youvebeenmilked2893 3 года назад
It’s paraffin wax! Don’t let them sell you more expensive stuff. Although it is quite a hassle, and I find it much easier to just use a wax based lube. It’s a liquid, and stays clean much longer than oil based lubes. Much quicker to apply than dipping your chain in hot wax. Also, often in impacts, you come off the clips. I’ve crashed and been separated very very often. Just falling over sideways at no speed causes me to be separated with at least one foot often. I highly suggest them, as they prevent more crashes. The fact that your foot never slips off of the pedal and stays true on the pedal is invaluable. But that’s just my point of view, do what you’re comfortable with! I also had the straps before for a year or more, and I’ll never go back. It is an improvement. Good luck sir, I hope you see you on the roads/paths somewhere. Congratulations on finding a new hobby

And there was a car behind us who got to see the whole thing. The only reassuring thing for me is the person in that car got a show.

How to avoid the bike tattoo and dirty fingers when changing tube. Use wax to lubricate the chain. It keeps the whole drivetrain sparkling clean, and you can avoid to use chemicals when cleaning. It's also the lowest friction you can attain, much better than expensive pulleys, as 70% of the friction within the bike comes from the chain.
