Definitely. The thing is none of these politicians are actually serious about Vision Zero. Even if bounties aren’t enacted they could tow cars and trucks just like they do during rush hour when people park illegally
It sounds good in theory but it would just lead to people abusing the system and would basically be a nanny state where people can’t trust each other and want to report everyone to the government, those type of citizen vigilante policies never work well.
We do when it's safe, but many bike lanes are poorly designed and downright dangerous. My local town has them, but they are very narrow and smack in the "door zone." Riding in them is guaranteed to get you seriously injured. The problem is that once they pass their driver's test, they never look at the laws again. They don't know and don't care.
I'm a construction worker and I often ride my bike to work, I'll gladly keep using the sidewalk when I feel like it. Some bike lanes are barely passable but most are a complete joke. Until Boston gets actual dedicated and isolated bike lanes, I'm riding sidewalks -- peds love walking in the bike lane anyway.
Yeah, if pedestrians are going to block and walk in the bike lane then it’s fair game to ride on the sidewalks when it’s downright dangerous to take the road. No cop is going to care about some tedious bylaw and sometimes the law needs to be bent because personal safety is far more important than some bylaw.
If you want to prevent motorist from accessing the bike lane use security blocks that will make it harder for motorist to get pass but also do what New York did and raise the curb making it hard for motorist to access the sidewalk. Not using road markers install concrete barriers that seperats Traffic to cyclist.. The Goal is to make it harder for motorist to access.
Well… am I the only person who’ noticed that Boston has spent Billions on new roads to fight the congestion of “old Boston” only to give up Half the roads to pedestrians and cyclists: and now the traffic is just as bad as it was in 1992? Smartest state in the Union, my a-.
@@ch0wned Switching road space from vehicles to cyclists/pedestrians also reduces congestion, as you can get 7 times as many people down a road on bikes per hour as you can in cars. It's now just a case of getting people to switch from their car to their bike.
Exactly. Something everyone should be questioning. Sad they are not even trying to enforce it but the parking meter people are out writing tickets for those who pay on the apps but give tickets anyway when their little machines they carry around don’t work…. Yes this happened to us and we luckily caught them getting ready to give the ticket until we showed our proof we paid for the spot yet these nut jobs get away with illegal parking.. 🤦🏻♀️
Awful! They all need hefty tickets and license taken away for repeat offenders for parking there. People need to think of others aside for themselves. People can be beyond selfish! City or not, this is no excuse to be a jerk while driving and illegally park! Keep off the bike lane! This isn’t hard people, if your doing it, then you are just being a complete idiot. Bikers have to weave out of cars in biking area when you block them which can cause accidents
Pay insurance, registration, excise tax, and put a license plate and inspection sticker on your handle bars THEN complain!! You bikers cause more problems than any boston driver. Lose that entitled arritude and life won't be so difficult there for ya ❄.
@@linedrive3546 one.. I don’t bike lol. Two You are the entitled one! Seems like your ok hitting cyclists? 🤷🏻♀️ if you have that much of a disregard for life then you shouldn’t be driving! I’ve seen more issues with motorists than I have with bikers, sure some do stupid things too but most of the issue are with the drivers and their selfishness and disregard for anyone else’s life but their own
@@linedrive3546 *insurance* Not required because a bicycle poses very little risk to other people and their property. *excise tax* People who cycle pay at least as much for the roads as anyone driving since roads are founded through taxes such as income tax. They might end up paying more than drivers though since bicyclists only use a small part of the road infrastructure compared to drivers. Also, cars do a lot of damage to the environment and the road structure than a tiny little bicycle. *license plate* I will quote an article here that explains it very well why that would be unrealistic: *Bikes should be registered with a tag, and cyclists should take a road test!* Response: Cyclists already get ticketed regularly-and it’s barely worth traffic cops’ time. The Lowdown: The mandatory bike-registration thing goes partly back to the “Cyclists don’t pay taxes!” argument; we already pay taxes. There’s another rationale: catching scofflaw cyclists. But no license plate appropriately sized for bikes is going to be useful for law enforcement, since the letters are illegible from more than a few feet away-and you can imagine how much money would need to go toward (and be condemned by drivers for) creating and maintaining size-appropriate ID chip technology. Cyclists get ticketed regularly and, considering how much risk bikes pose to the population relative to cars, cyclists don’t have to pay as much for comparable traffic infractions; police make more money ticketing cars. As for the road test, let’s first answer this question: Since children down to toddlers ride bikes on public streets, what age would you like to start the test at?
@@k-rj740 children and toddlers are smarter than most bike riders so, we can start the same time as licensing at 16. Then, you pay all the same taxes and fees drivers do AND THEN AND ONLY THEN WILL YOU'LL BE RESPECTED ON THE ROAD!! You pay less fees and expect more road. I've had bikers slam into my car and getting them to pay for the damage was nearly impossible and it was their fault.
The thing is none of these politicians are actually serious about Vision Zero. Even if bounties aren’t enacted they COULD tow cars and trucks just like they do during rush hour when people park illegally. They could ticket. And to the news person or politician who said something about cyclists riding “where they belong”. Learn the law! Do you think they never have to turn left and that bike lanes go everywhere? There’s no law saying they belong in a bike lane, especially if it’s filled with cars, pot holes, and debris.
It's a city so even cars only is tuff enough never mind adding bikers then people cross walking. To much going on. It will never be close to perfect just need to deal with it
Yes but the blocked bike lanes are just unacceptable and can easily be fixed by protected bike lanes and enforcement. It’ll definitely get better, but i agree there are always some cons in life
Cars themselves don’t pay anything. Cars also pollute and do much more damage to roads, wildlife, the environment and people than bikes do, so their use should be disincentivised.
Actually you are correct, but the problem is cars don't pay enough taxes for the amount of damage they cause to city's finances, car driving is so expensive that each driver gets around $50k+ each year in subsidies. Cities bleed money for every mile driven while they gain money for every mile riden or walked. I wish it was the case, where susbsidies didn't exist and drivers were forced to pay all the costs assocsiated with driving, for ex gas tax that hasn't been increased since 1990's, a tax for how many people cars kill and injure, those people are dead, no longer contributing to the economy. Tax for pollution and sedentiry lifestyle that cars promote as it effects people's health, resulting in costing society even more money. No more free parking anywhere, parking should cost the same as renting a small room in the area. Cars cause traffic, a congestion fee for all the services that get blocked sitting in traffic. If all these costs and many more were introduced, your statement would actually be correct. As it stands, it's only correct on the surface.
If drivers never did this, you'd have a point. But they do, and just about as often. People don't suddenly become responsible because they ride a bike. It's a choice. It's wrong when motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians break the law.
A cyclist running a red light endangers no one but themselves. A car running a red light is an extremely dangerous and very serious risk of injury or death to all road users including themselves. Ideally no cyclists should need red lights or stop signs especially, protected lanes would solve that problem.
They won't crack down because cyclists aren't killing people, even the renegade ones. When will they crack down on all the distracted and aggressive divers?
@@charlesclark9627 People who bike aren’t required to stay in the bike lane and are allowed to use the street. Furthermore people who bike reduce congestion. Imagine a city where you could walk/bike everywhere. It would be magical!
Cyclists can use all public ways of travel unless noted. So don't get mad at me when you're walking around with your earbuds buried into your dirty ass ears making you unable to hear your surroundings because you're a monghead.
That last part is funny, he is riding his bike so there is 1 less car to cause traffic yet these bike lanes reduce road sizes so 2 lane roads now become single lane. Also many streets that offered parking was removed for bike lanes reducing available parking.
Yes but those lanes can fit a lot more bikers than cars. Go look at any European city, this change will benefit the city in the long run and reduce congestion.
They aren't blocking the lane as a good BMX rider could easily go over top and avoid the extreme risk of dodging in and out of the lane. Don't risk your life for their convince.
No, absolutely not. Public roads need more bike lanes. If you build it they will come. Meaning more people willing to bike to commute as that would make roads safer and less cars on the road. It is a common misconception that bike lanes make traffic worse but studies show it’s the opposite.
You probably don't realize this thing about bike lanes: they're created to separate bike traffic from car traffic. The opposite is true if there are cars parked on it. You're welcome.
Pedestrians walk and stand on the bike lanes illegally, and if you see bikes on the sidewalks then it’s a clear sign the roads aren’t safe. A cyclists’s life is more important than a bylaw. Car drivers are far worse with abiding by rules, and the big thing is that when cars don’t abide by road rules it endangers everyone on the road, when bikes do it they’re only endangering themselves and maybe pedestrians, but the pedestrian is unlikely to be seriously hurt or killed. Also way to stereotype cyclists, because most of us follow the law and you should be pro-bike lane because it helps everyone and it also prevents bikes from having to stop for stoplights and stop signs.
For those of us who are responsible and professional riders, yes we do actually exist but are ignored. The inexperienced and/or irresponsible riders are usually noticed the most.
Maybe check to see how many bikes roll through stop signs and then compare to how many drivers roll through the same stop sign. Just as many to more drivers will roll through the stop sign or maybe more. As for red lights many car will run through red lights that just turned red when they are meant to stop on the yellow regardless. Maybe check the facts before complaining about bikes and notice how bad drivers are. Also also when drivers make a mistake they could result in the death of a human because they are operating heavy machinery.
Have you ever seen a motor vehicle driver obey speed limits consistently? Speed definitely kills pedestrians and cyclists - that’s no doubt about that.
