The Burke study is completely ridiculous. It took me 2.5 weeks to keto adapt during which I could hardly train, Once keto adapted, my performance sky rocketed. You cant honestly think that comparing someone going through ketoadaptation is a true reflection of keto performance. Completely disingenuous.
@dtmateo
@dtmateo 8 месяцев назад
ROFL! Nobody gets fat-adapted in just 3 weeks. The goal of keto is fat adaptation. Going ketosis is the easy part. Getting fat adapted takes MONTHS. And when you are fat adapted you can do anaerobic efforts in quicker succession because you no longer suffer from lactic acid pain caused by carbs. It took me almost a year of keto diet to break my Strava PRs. I could ride 160kms without eating.

Your “study” that you cite was for a three week timeframe. I did have like a week adaptation period where I had pretty low energy. After that training was fine.... I didn't do any races, but I could hit all the training zones without an obvious performance hit. But.... I don't think I really saw any benefits either.... I didn't lose any more weight that I would have eating the same calories of a "normal" diet. I don't feel like I had real performance benefit. I didn't really notice the supposed mental benefit. The only real difference I noticed is that the effects of alcohol were greatly intensified, one alcoholic beverage would feel like 4. @@danfox8819agree. Keto adaptation (for performance , not basic survival) takes months. But even when you are super adapted you’re still going to need carbs once you go into an anaerobic state. And I’ve also seen a study where the more efficient you are at burning fat, the less efficient you are at burning carbs. So you end up scarifying a great chunk of your exercise time. Let’s be realistic, no one rides always below the anaerobic threshold! Unless you’re doing slow rides and avoiding climbs or strong head winds 😂 I’ve been keto for one year, then regular diet, then back to being keto for another year and although i could ride 4-5h fasted, I could never go past 200w for long or i would feel my legs burn. Also recovery between rides would take 2 to 3 times longer when on keto. Best practice? A combination. Do base period and z2 rides on no/low carbs and as intensity goes up fuel with carbs to get the best of both worlds. Pros do it. So I guess we can also benefit from it if done correctly

@@danfox8819 I dont see why 3 weeks, 3 months or even 3 years of so called "fat adaptation" is going to change the underlying biochemistry here. The bottle neck is your VO2 max i.e your bodies carburettor as it where so unless fat adaptation somehow allows you to breathe in and absorb more oxygen when burning fats instead of carbs you will always have more ATP per litre oxygen when processing carbs. The limiting factor to ATP production is oxygen uptake and from the biochemistry in converting either carbs or fats to ATP the carbs produce more ATP per litre oxygen, end of story. If you have found a way to bypass this or hack the biochemistry somewhere then please share

No one is really saying that keto is better for short stuff.

Maybe not for cycling but there are track athletes that do this, I still think its a terrible idea and I expect a lot more people to have kidney problems over the next 20-30yrs

If you want to loose weight fast, strict keto/carnivore diet is a way to go. It worked for me and I almost lost hope to get into my shape and fitness again. Here are some of my tips: You can't perform on strict keto diet as a cyclist, that's for sure. You need to keep that in mind. Carbs are important source of energy, but for some time you will need to get rid of all carbs. So what I did was , I went on a strict carnivore diet for few weeks in the winter (I think that was 3 weeks). I ate mostly meat with lots of fat and eggs. I mean, I wasn't hungry but damn, cravings for sugar.. First week I wasn't cycling at all, second week I just did zone 2 or sub zone 2 short rides. I aimed at consistency of the rides with low intensity. First week changing a diet was tough, I got keto flu... I started loosing weight very quickly mostly because of water but then body adopted to fat I guess..(after a month or so) and my scale started showing some results... When doing keto, zone 2 is your friend - you can't do intervals anyway. After 2 months when I started doing intervals and high intensity rides (hills) I started adding sugars back but I ONLY USED THEM DURING RIDES and I made sure I came empty at the end of the ride. Instead of gels I was using honey. I lost 20 kg in 4 months. One side effect was improved endurance . I don't get completely wasted on long rides as before. Part of that is for sure also weight loss, but I think I can go longer without eating on a bike... There are also other benefits of this diet , my focus is better and I have more energy. I strongly recommend keto or even carnivore diet for some time. It helped me get back on the bike after a prolonged off the bike period. I wouldn't go writing this if it didn't work. If I save a soul or 2 I will be happy :)

I’m proof that you can perform better without carbs when you are fat-adapted
@McGregis

@@dtmateo i agree, cycling when fat adapted is amazing, but suden drop of power when starting keto is huge and makes a huge strain on body. You can see HR going up abnormally and can lead to overtraining faster. Im not saying it cant be done its just slow progress and in the beginning you can use some carbs to ease the transition.
@dtmateo

@@McGregis oh yes, the first few months is gonna hurt. It took me three months to get fat adapted. When I started not having carbs climbing was very slow and my legs didn’t have any power. I could only do zone 2-3. When I got fat adapted it felt like cheating. I could not feel the lactic acid pain anymore even when pushing at anaerobic efforts. My muscles would get tired after repeated anaerobic efforts but they do not get sore. I could essentially “rest” at vo2max then push to anaerobic again within a few seconds. I could ride 180kms+ on a fixie while tackling 15% hills without food.

I can't understand why any cyclist would think you would be fastest/better high end performer with out enough carbs. Keto isn't a bad ting it just won't help your high end power.

@@dtmateo How the hell does you breaking your PR translate to an elite athlete up against the best in the world? Not trying to rain or ur parade here but have you ever considered that the PR you broke was broken specifically because it wasn't that great and that you are just relatively fitter than your former self possibly bcos u trained better or smarter? just saying 🤷‍♂️

@@888jucu because my PR has been standing for more than four years and I am getting old into my mid 40’s and have been in constant decline over the years. I did not go keto for performance. I went keto for health reasons and was willing to sacrifice cycling performance because at the state that I was in I had nothing to lose anymore. It was a complete surprise for me that keto improved my performance. It’s like I’m 4 years younger.
