This is a short cycle I took on world bike day to look at some infrastructure in the north east of Glasgow that doesn't connect to anything and had a few issues that need fixed. On my journey I travel up the new active travel bridge over the M8 and through Sighthill along Petershill road up Red road and onto Broomfield road until I reach Wallacewell road named after a well that William Wallace used. Here I discus the infrastructure that's here and why you hardly see any cyclists using it. I then head back a different direction into town looking briefly at another piece of infrastructure.

They need to get a street sweeper up that cycle lane on Wallacewell Road. That's the sort of thing that stops me using a dedicated lane and just use the main road.

Cycled that road almost everyday as I worked in Stobhill. They never clean the lanes and in the wet they are very slippy.

Another fab video ! One of your best ! So informative , good to see different areas around Glasgow and beyond and how the infrastructure is hopefully improving for cyclists ! Looking forward to the next one :) 🚴🏼🚴🏼

Dutchman here. I really hope you get to the point that we're at (or even better :D). I've got two kids (2,5 years and 11 weeks) and I can't wait to teach them how to ride a bike so they can go places. I wish everyone lived in a place where they would feel comfortable letting their kids ride bikes unsupervised.

Wow - what a great channel. As an old guy who cycles (electric LOL) mainly in S.W. Glasgow I will be checking out your videos - maybe get some inspiration to cross the river. You obviously spend a lot of time and thought compiling your action cam, 360 action cam , drone shots, commentary and music to make an interesting video - well done :)

Yay Glasgow cycling videos! I love Not Just Bikes and Oh The Urbanity and I’ve been hoping for Glasgow equivalents. Been thinking of making videos too, my commute along Paisley Rd West is quite a scary one at times, wish so much it had proper lanes!

I'm a keen cyclist and also a high mileage driver. Your points are well made about the planning and execution of cycle lanes. As a driver though I drive past cyclists on busy main roads that are a few feet from a perfectly usable cycle lane. When I'm cycling I always use the cycle lanes but then again I'm not usually pushed for time. For some cyclists it seems to be about rebellion and for others it's about their Strava segment times. Busy roads, angry or distracted drivers, bad decisions by cyclists all add up to avoidable trouble.

"For some cyclists it seems to be about rebellion and for others it's about their Strava segment times." Fascinating that you can discern that just from watching them. Would you be able to tell that I am hustling along on my bicycle because (a) I enjoy moving along on a bicycle, and (b) I'm eager to get home before lunchtime to enjoy a recovery mix, refreshing shower, lunch (!), and soaking in endorphins?

Still say the attitude and education of drivers is needed just as much. I’m very much for having a driver cycle through a city as part of training and test. I was cycling on a segregated lane along the London embankment which is great but guess what I met reversing down it? Yup a car! As a cyclist and driver I see so many people who really haven’t a clue they lack anticipation, coordination, reaction, basic knowledge of the Highway Code and empathy amongst other things.

Excellent video! There's a similar sittuation in Darnley just next to SilverBurn on Brockburn Road and a few others connected to the same roundabout. They took a lane off of the stroad and used armadillos to build a pretty decent bike lane. The problem is there are no real connections to anything and they terminate at a proper meat-grinder of a roundabout

I've been wanting to visit this lane (during rush hour) since they installed it as I think it could be the most controversial of all the spaces for people that was put in place. Remember driving on it a few years ago and it was definitely a stroad.

Great video! I’ve so many thoughts on this… Around my area in Northern Ireland it’s the same, there is ‘token’, check box, infrastructure, but it’s not connected up in anyway really. Any painted on cycle lanes are full of parked cars, and shared use lanes with pedestrians are dangerous too! I’m a road cyclist, so 90% of the time I’ll be on the road anyway (as a a group of 8 cyclists riding at 18mph is not suitable in a cycle lane), but for my kids, and the general population surely we should be promoting active travel as the day to day norm, and that can’t be done with poor infrastructure. Also as a tangent I’m cycling to Glasgow from Northern Ireland in August to watch the world championships, any route recommendations or tips would be ace!

I would cycle up route 7 on the national cycle network but head to Kilmarnock from Irvine and up the A77 really depends how much time your giving yourself to travel.

@@glasgowcycles I should have all day on the way out, but on the way back I need to be at Cairnryan for about 2pm… I had planned to cycle from Cairnryan to Stranraer and get the train there to Ayr (to skip out that bad section of road), then head for Kilbirnie to pick up an old railway that is now a segregated cycle greenway

There are fewer cycle lanes in the East End of Glasgow, and the ones we have are not maintained and only have a blob of paint for protection. The London Road cycle lanes stop and start and, in my opinion, built in the wrong place. Can you do a review of the London Road cycle lanes👍🏻

its great that the cycle lane is in place and I remember before it was a painted cycle lane on both sides so a big improvement. Hopefully the city network plan goes full steam ahead as part of phase 1 is Royston road from this bit (Siemens street) all the way to Baird street

I commuted to work for well over 20 years, all year round 15 mile round trip. For a couple miles there was a cycle lane but I didn't use it. I worked a ten hour night shift. That lane, due to debris, deliberate tin tacks and broken bottles, blackthorns from cut hedges, It was at least, despite precautions, two punctures a month. I cycled on the road. The traffic was very light my journey was 7.30 evening and 8.00 morning. When I retired I continued to cycle for fun, joy, adventure. When the latest cycle laws were introduced re-overtaking I gave up riding on the road. I couldn't bear to be a rolling roadblock for traffic.
@glasgowcycles
@glasgowcycles Год назад
That's a shame. Nothing worse than having a driver revving their engine right behind you experienced it so many times. Also if traffic is slow behind me and there is a bit of room I'm quite happy to wave them through as long as they are going 20mph or less.

I recently cycled from Dumbarton to Stranraer, Actually it was a trip inspired by your video where you stayed in galloway forrest! I even found where you camped, was a bit too windy for me though sadly. But, I was seriously impressed with the cycling routes just south of Glasgow, I think its NCR 7? Its pretty amazing how good it feels to be on segregated bike paths.
@glasgowcycles
@glasgowcycles Год назад
That's fantastic. Wanted to go further into the forrest park on that trip but daylight limitations forced me to camp there. Really need to go back and go all the way to Stranraer as that was my 1st time going that way. How is the route further on from where I camped?
@callumbucknall
@callumbucknall Год назад
@@glasgowcycles I was visiting family so my route through the forrest was dictated by komoot! But after your campsite it was one more large hill then down into glentrool. The bit i was worried about the most was the A75, but that had cycle paths / parallel roads aswell, all in all, from when I left dumbarton all the way to Stranraer it was a cracking cycle. Maybe ayr was a bit busy, but tbh I dont think it followed the National cycle route through ayr which i think i could have done for an extra couple of Km overall.

Cyclists would use the infrastructure if some qualities were there. Both infrastructure and culture are lagging behind. As a road cyclist, I find many cycle lanes in Germany made only for full suspension fat e-bikes with the thickest tires and it makes constant honk so people are aware that a "bicycle" is coming.
@lamf4846
@lamf4846 Год назад
Because they don't exist? There is one nearby, with spaced out bollards to separate it from the rest of the road. Consequently, it's covered in soil, rubbish, stones and glass because it cannot be swept by a road cleaning vehicle.

What the British really need to do is, take a smallish city, probably one on it's east where it is similar to The Netherlands (Cambridge, Peterborough, Ipswich, Norwich, Hull etc). All these cities are quite flat, have a dry/sunny climate, small and have cultural connections to the Netherlands. Then throw everything at them. Copy exactly what they have done in Amsterdam with cycling infrastructure. Ignore the Gammons who hate cyclists and want to drive 800ft every day. I'm afraid cities like Glasgow, Manchester, Bristol etc will never be cycling heavens like the cities on the east, they're too hilly and wet, and also don't really have the same culture of cycling the east does. The rest of the UK could over the next few decades follow some of the ideas, but while Hull could be the next Amsterdam, Glasgow could at least half do it.

seansean - I wonder whether you've read the government policy on active (cycling/walking) transport www.gov.uk/government/publications/cycling-and-walking-plan-for-england Cycle infrastructure is often installed to encourgae people to cycle, as without it they'd feel far too unsafe. There might only be one cyclist using the lanes, but there are also very few vehicles in the video. The video was therefore probably recorded at a time of day when few people are moving around.
