He reminds me of my late father who was a sheet metal worker from probably same era late 1960s/1970s very highly educated the workers were back in those times , nowadays the youngsters in their 20a just google the answer for everything which is not good as that is not how your supposed to learn , your supposed to learn through trial and error not cheating.

My neighbour told me good advice as a child when jacking up a car always use Axle Stands just in case the jack gives way as he sadly witnessed a co worker at the garage he used to work for crushed by a car , basically he said the co worker was in a rush to fix a customers car and cut corners disregarding his health and safety back in the 1960s and sadly dead at only 28 years of age not good. So good to see your dad had the health and safety in mind and put Axle stands under the car

This video was fantastic!🤗 Your dad is a super knowledgeable bloke. And loved he just magically appeared all these clever tools and devices. 🔧👍 My suspect is the thermostat. Hence, it is stuck open and not allowing the car to get to the temp and mabye the coolant temp sensor as well due to fan running. I woukd also recommend replacing the coolant cap. A problem on many Rover models. I had to replace mine on my 1.4 K series 25 😊 I highly recommend (Discount MG Rover Spares) for all your Rover & MG Parts and are also fantastic for help and guidance to issues and common faults.

Thanks mate and thanks for your suggestions! We will give them a go. There are quite a few videos on the way - were still none the wiser at this time BUT - lots of parts ordered and lots of diagnostics going on
@dolomite_73
@dolomite_73 6 месяцев назад
Interesting stuff! The thermostat is certainly suspect. Something to be aware of, apologies if you already know this, the temperature gauge on the 75 is non-linear. It'll sit at normal (9 o'clock) if the temp is anywhere between 75 and 105. The 75's trip display has an inbuilt diagnostic function that can give a numerical read out though! Google or search RU-vid for "Rover 75 diagnostic mode" for instructions, but the short version is: - hold down trip reset until a number appears - keep pressing trip reset till you get to 19 and stop - display will keep switching between l_off and l_on - press trip reset button once when it says l_off - keep pressing trip reset button till you get to 7 and stop - coolant temp will now be shown at the bottom of the display I used to use this on most journeys when I had a 1.8 75, just to keep an eye on things.

Coolant caps were always an issue and were the first thing I used to check before pressurising the cooling system to check for leaks. On a couple of occasions, I found the leak was behind an exhaust valve due to a porous head which I discovered when I pressurised the cooling system then slowly turned the engine over while looking through the spark plug hole and noticed water dripping into the cylinder when the valve opened. Change the cap and bleed it properly before delving deeper to remove any doubt about the simpler things. Good luck

From what I can tell, the Spring recall only effected the early cars (up to 2001) but not the Tourers. It seems they basically just powder-coated them due to issues with corrosion before when they were just a painted spring.

Put a u shape pipe on the heater hoses at the back of the engine to bypass the heater then see if the jiggle valve ball bearing is stuck up in the inlet manifold .its near the dipstick tube...then bleed the system...renew the o rings on the expansion cap... put silucone grease on them...then try again...Bob...Paignton....Good luck.....

Fan running when the engine is cold: Faulty temp sensor for the ECU. Either the blue or the brown sensor. I cannot tell them apart. The way you described the temperatures floating around while you were on the road would point to thermostat

You can get replacement bonnet insulation pads from Rimmers… not expensive in themselves but the large packaging is. Did it on my 1.8, seems to be a failure due to overheating / steam… The front spring also went, there was a clip thing supplied later that stopped broken springs dislocating… I fitted them to mine.

Maybe there was a huge air pocket in the system when you bought it and therefore you had weird temperatures and seemingly lost a lot of coolant? New thermostat after 20 years and sensor seem like a sensible thing to do too like someone else suggested.

As you have a head gasket kit. I would change it as a precaution. Heater matrix is full of crap. Pressure cap is suspect. I wouldn't rule out a cracked block.

The early cars had a 3-speed cooling fan controller (part of the fan motor), they were problematic as were the later 2-speed ones (the half-speed resistor for the AC only fails). I bet the coolant changes have been neglected and it needs a good flush or two with Wynn’s or similar…

Good morning, you need to do a proper head gasket test with the coloured dye that changes colour , my money is on the shaft on the water pump has broken on the inside and the water isn’t being pumped around the engine, it’s getting up to temp then boiling over , or the thermostat but as long as the top and bottom rad house are hot then that’s ok , as for the heater matrix disconnect both pipes that run through the bulkhead to the matrix and put compressed air through the matrix
@JonCoupland
@JonCoupland 6 месяцев назад
Hi Phil - as Dad says, this was a bit of a 'shed' version of the test - good advice RE the dye. There are so many videos on the way - but not to give too many 'spoilers' away the water pump is all ok. Thermostat is removed and tested in the next video and the heater matrix is being tackled too :) Hopefully you stay with the channel and enjoy the updates
