The Berceuse is part of the triumphant recital Cyprien Katsaris gave on 17 October 1999 in the fabulous surroundings of the main auditorium of Carnegie Hall in New York on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Chopin’s death. Katsaris presents us with anything but a routine reading of Chopin’s work. His approach is highly personal: unexpected counter-tones in his turn of phrase, tempi that are often unusual, breaks and contrasts informing dynamics, articulation and pedal work. The New York audience was manifestly electrified, giving a standing ovation, repeatedly calling the pianist back for several minutes and finally wresting from him three encores.

Without any doubt one of the greatest living pianists. He has posted on RU-vid a lot of superb recordings lately. One of my favorite recordings is a old recording of the eighties, of Rachmaninovs piano concerto No 3. He brings out voices with his thumbs never heard from any other available recording of this piece.
