Cyprien Katsaris gave this triumphant recital on 17 October 1999 in the fabulous surroundings of the main auditorium of Carnegie Hall in New York on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Chopin’s death. Katsaris’ talent radiates in this selection of some of the most beautiful works of the Polish composer: the Funeral March Op. 72 No. 2, Fantasie-impromptu, Berceuse, Mazurka Op. 33 No. 4, Polonaise “Militaire” Op. 40 No. 1, Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2, Barcarolle, Fantasy Op. 49, the Funeral March movement (only) from Sonata No. 2, Sonata No. 3 and various shorter pieces. Cyprien Katsaris presents us with anything but a routine reading of Chopin’s work. His approach is highly personal: unexpected counter-tones in his turn of phrase, tempi that are often unusual, breaks and contrasts informing dynamics, articulation and pedal work. The New York audience was manifestly electrified, giving a standing ovation, repeatedly calling the pianist back for several minutes and finally wresting from him three encores.
This memorable recital is available on CD, DVD and on all the most popular download and streaming sites worldwide:

Come on! Katsaris was 9th prize winner in weak Queen Elisabeth competition in 1972! Katsaris was not finals Tchaikovsky competition! Katsaris has an ice cold colorless thin piano sound! Katsaris no good structure for music! Katsaris played brainless bashing! Dimitri Bashkirov her teacher Anastasia Virsaladze teach saying to Bashkirov the most important lesson is the love of beautiful colorful piano sound! This was already in 1930s! Really Shocking! Mozart wrote do not make my kids average players! Katsaris is an average awful player!

There is a handful of pianists who, perhaps because they play fewer concerts, perhaps because they don't attract publicity by dressing up in glod larmé bikinis, or swaying and appealing to the heavens when they play. Because of the Internet and RU-vid these pianists are now being seen for what they are - legends. This is extraordinary piano plyaing. He takes a prelude and it becomes as magnificnet as a ballade. Great pianists don't play faster or more accurately, they have magic.

Excellent points. Some young and not great pianists grimace, gyrate, and contort like a dying cow. Yo Yo Ma has started to do this as his cello playing has markedly diminished to the point he now plays like a pig.

@@ciararespect4296 Is anyone stopping them from making their money. If they want to give a show of waving hands in the air and making grimaces, well and good. He brings out counter melodies andinner voices as Cortot often WISHED to do, but rarely-if-ever borught off with the elegance, suavity and aura of spontaneity required. This is an artist of very great magnitude. Makes us lsten to well-knon classics with new ears. Coudln't be imitated by anyone, yet inspires us to continue the unending , lifelong attempt to scale the slopes of Parnassus in hopes of one day reaching the pinnacle despite of the long-held odds against us

Just noticed this. The piano bench is not squared up with the piano. Wonder why he has it this way? Treble side closer in. Bass side further out. Never heard the Barcarolle played better. Amazingly wonderful rendition. What command of the keyboard!
@Freddy-yw4ec
@Freddy-yw4ec 4 месяца назад
The bench is at an angle because his butt is sore from so much practice. People should understand that the amount of playing he does on any particular day, as much as he plays, can not just wear you down but make your butt very sore too. Remember: this is the evening, the end of the day, and he played considerably before the concert--and more than usual recently because of Carnegie approaching--one of the reasons his delivery is so fluid. People may be sensitive enough to notice the musical nuances, but I'm afraid the average concert goer is woefully out of touch with the crude physical realities of an Impresario. It is so demanding, physically and mentally, on so many levels--as is any fine art that consumes your life.

Can anyone tell me what the music is in the very short opening credits, before the concert starts?

The portrait throughout the _"Polonaise Militaire"_ and especially after 26:10 is hilarious and great camera and directing work !

I´d give a LOT to hear Cyprien Katsaris "live".... here, in Copenhagen. ( a wee danish fan is pleading).

Warum erwähnt eigentlich niemand Chopin selbst, der die Klaviermusik und vor allem das Klavierspiel auf ein bis dahin unbekanntes Niveau gebracht hat?
