Cyprus Could Change Forever...

Cyprus has changed a lot in the past few years, and Cyprus could change forever in the near future.
This is what I think could happen to the beautiful island Cyprus very soon.
As I helped hundreds of people move to Cyprus over the last few years, I realized that the growth of Cyprus is rapidly increasing.
More people are moving to Cyprus like never before. More properties are being built and rented like never before. And more money is flowing into Cyprus like never before.
But what does this mean exactly? Well, no one knows for certain, but my gut feelings tell me Cyprus could become of the key players in the EU within the next few years!
Great geopolitical location, amazing climate and business benefits, and many interesting people are the ingredients for something Big!
But, it's important to stay rational and logical, so that we don't run into problems in the future because of this massive growth! We shouldn't get blinded by money and focus on what really matters. People.

The gap between the haves and have-nots is surely increasing, and as a Cypriot that concerns me. I am definitely in favour of a vibrant multi-cultural society, with people from other countries calling this island home, and sharing their diversity and heritage with locals, but I also want to live in a country where ordinary people feel cared for and are able to access a life of dignity and security.

I am currently thinking about where to move and Cyprus has long been on my mind. I’ve been wondering about this topic before, because it is what’s keeping me from moving to Portugal for example. In Lisbon the locals cannot afford to live in the city anymore. It is a surreal reality and something I don’t want to take part in worsening. I really appreciate you bringing this up. And also for you trying to keep it balanced. It’s easy to be all doom and gloom. I have hope the Cypriots will live up to this and turn it into something good 💪💪

Interesting, I was wondering about this as well. Once I moved to Cyprus, the rent prices had already increased, but as someone coming from Hamburg, Germany, it was almost surreal how affordable everything was and that you had the opportunity to rent something instead of "applying" for a totally overpriced flat while hoping that you are the chosen one out of the 20 people who also applied for the privilege to rent it :-D - Always Depends on the perspective. And location, of course. Larnaca, where I am living, has great infrastructure and lots of things going for it, also. Yet it is still modest in rent prices. ( I currently pay 550€ for 95 m² in a quiet street, but 8 min walking distance to the central city beach. And most important: Cat friendly. It is an older building with its quirks during winter times, though. :-D Meanwhile, I was also fascinated, that "everyone" seems to drive German, or British premium cars, not what I expected, especially since I looked up the medium income in Cyprus and had problems getting these two things together in my head. That said, I am with you on the point that, especially since the island is small, things could spiral out of control quickly. At least the youth has the opportunity to look at the expats who mostly work remote anyway, and would be able to do the same. Especially since the locals speak English so well. I think a sharp price hike would also mean, especially since the island is relatively small, that much money influx could also mean a worker shortage, and therefore rising wages. That would be optimal. But it will be a turbulent time for sure. I hope it will take a few years until things will get crazy.
@Rico
@Rico Год назад
Hey! Thanks for sharing your opinion and experience. Interesting to read. I know so many people from Hamburg that moved to Cyprus, haha! Yes, if we compare it to Germany, it's a blessing here, especially the fact that you mentioned as well, that we don't have to apply for a property (yet?) But I definitely see that it's getting more competitive. 2 years ago you could easily take some time with deciding for a property, now you have to be so quick. Regards to Larnaca.

I could see that the UK was becoming a failed state in 2017 and bought a villa in 2017 cash in Pissouri Limassol for my escape route. It's doubled in value since then. As have all Pissouri rents. My villa was a bargain even then. I considered the market undervalued and I was right. I also have passive income from the UK which we allow me to live pretty good without working. As I have no rent to pay I'm in a pretty decent position as housing is now the killer expense. I feel seriously sorry for the youngish average Cypriot who are struggling. This is a problem for all Western countries. I cannot see the situation improving. GBP is holding against the Euro so I cannot moan. I do not think Cyprus is cheap generally. Eating out is expensive. Fuel is not cheap. Bottom line? Post covid the world is now much more expensive. There's nowhere to run save say SE Asia but that's generally 3rd world and no good to me....

I was living in Limassol for 2020-21 and I was paying 650 for one bedroom apartment. Now you can't find anything below 1000. It's gonna be a huge problem for Cypriots finding a apartment to rent with the local salaries. Also finding people to work in tourism is going to be much harder as it was common thing for Greeks to move to Cyprus for work. Now it's impossible for Greeks to relocate to Cyprus. It is true that Cyprus needs to be more people-friendly. The bus network is practically non-existent and someone needs to start working on that. Lemesos, Levkosia, Larnaca, but also Paphos and Paralimnee-Ayia Napa are surely cities that need to have a decent public transport system and be connected with their suburbs in order for the Cypriot people to go wherever they want without constantly having to drive a car, thus leading to more and more traffic jam, especially on Lemesos, where the problem has increased severely. There is already an intercity buses network (between cities) which functions very good, and is easily used, but inside the cities, it's just a mess. People are complaining about this problem since the 1960s', and every government says "it will solve it" but of course never does. Now, about the rent prizes, Cypriots students who want to study say in Levkosia, cannot afford those ridiculous demands, and are forced to go abroad. And it's not only the students. Cypriot people, especially, Cypriot refugees who lost their properties since 1974 because of the Turkish Invasion, do not have the money to rent or buy a hose and leave their parents house to be on their own.

@TheresaMueller
@TheresaMueller 6 месяцев назад
The socalled good working intercity bus system offers 1 times a day a connection between Agia Napa to Paphos. And there not to Kato but to a very new bus stop that one has to change always to the local bus. They don't give you information, because "it is not my company". And to get from the airport Paphos to the East - Larnaka or Agia Napa or back, one always has to stay overnight and pay 10Euros for the bus in one direction. That makes a good Ryanair flight connection to and from Paphos airport obsolete, when paying at least 50Euros one way additionally for transport and hotel and losing 2days.

Hey Ricco, very good topic. Good to see you animated and passionate about current living conditions as well as the future in Cyprus. I’m positive that as in some other EU countries, Cyprus will become hopefully a very positive place to live in. Yes, we must protect the middle class and the poor and invest and educate in the young generation’s future. Opportunities for everyone. But the rich will only get richer as more wealth arrives to the island. The concern I have is the political instability on the island. Will Turkey cause more problems in the annexation of the northern part? I doubt there will be a solution to reunite the island. That instability may reduce or hamper the interest of those that want to invest in Cyprus’ future. We will see. I hope not! 👍

First thing would be to do sth. about public transportation. It is terrible, that the bus companies don't work together and that it is like in a lottery to find out at what time a bus is stopping where, because most of the ppl don't care as they all drive cars. This is not 21st century living and definetely not future oriented. There should be a railtrack from East to West and from there connecting bus services. In a few years the island is overloaded with cars and they will move from one traffic jam to the next. Think and act now!
@PixPete
@PixPete Год назад
It's a problem caused directly by the governments of most Western countries. People only run away to somewhere else when things get so bad they cannot stand to stay, so those governments need to make serious improvements to stop people leaving - lower taxes, cut regulations, lower the cost of living, stricter laws for safety, stop uncontrolled illegal immigration, and most importantly LEAVE people alone to get on and enjoy their lives!

950 euros per month salary is really not big, bright, beautiful and utopian for locals. Locals cant afford such high rents and trust me gen z and millenials will vanished... Cypriots have no place to Cyprus anymore... the poor will be poorer and the rich will be richer ... Oh and by any chance stop talking about the invasion of Turkey in 1974 you have zero knowledge about it. It was never diveded .. it was INVADED.
