Very interesting topic, as a Cyrus ‘investor’ over the years I’ve just been investigating HD music sources. I was an early adopter of the CD format on a Philips 104. Upgrades over the years and reinvesting in some same albums that had been digitally remastered including their vinyl equivalent. You get used to your system, then occasionally I put a CD on and I can still get that wow feeling - it’s still about the source! Whether it be a remaster or just an early CD that a sound engineer has laboured over to transfer master tapes to digital. What I’m saying is there is still so much CD has to offer when it’s done right. Watching this has made me think that maybe my sojourn for HD sourced material is still too early as the industry still cannot agree on the appropriate and best format (MQA/DSD for example). What a shame they still want to make the consumer suffer not haven’t learnt the lessons from decades ago, VHS v Betamax format wars. Streaming services are after expensive monthly subs, you don’t own anything and the originating artist gets little in return. Surely this is wrong. So I’m sticking with my Spotify for the time being but when i want to sit down and immerse myself in the music it will still be CD and Vinyl. To all music lovers out there - enjoy!

I've soldiered on with my Marantz CD6004 for a number of years, but with our downsizing move to a small home in a retirement village, I feel the need to finally downsize my next cd player. The obvious contender is Cyrus CDi. Expensive certainly, but with lots of promise especially over my old Marantz, and I think I've convinced the War Department that we both really do need a better player...
I think cd is still worthy. Just bought a denon dcd 1500 mk1 dirt cheap. Sound is sublime. Cds are still very worthy and the best physical audio format.
I love vinyl and CDs. NO 'streaming' for me at all. Streaming is nothing but renting music via a paid subscription. You don't own anything when streaming. The companies can delete all access and playlists at a moment's notice.
CDs are still fun!!!...It is still nice to have a Copy of your own..collecting. Is part of life..it would be horrible not own any thing...also that mean no books..paintings..pictures ete...your home would have nothing if we continue to relie on the net and TV for that matter!
Yes there is a need for CD-Player. Also turntables. Not to forget that there are many things that streaming services do NOT offer. Many artists don't want to be on streaming platforms. There are thousands of albums that are neither on CD nor on streaming portals. They are simply out of print also.
I liked your choice of compact disc. I recognized it immediately -- Mark Knopfler "Golden Heart". I have a couple of those and a very rare Germany pressing of a disc called "Golden Demos" -- really hard to find. I also have the Dire Straits Brothers in Arms disc imported from Japan that they call SHMD which are made from polycarbonate instead of normal plastic and there's definitely a difference if your CD player and the rest of your equipment is up to the task.
The main issue I have with CDs these days is that most new releases have poor dynamic range. New Vinyl releases alongside the CDs tend to have much better dynamic range as a recording. Which is a shame. I have kept many old CDs from the 80s and 90s which still sound great, and their re-releases/re-masters sound bad in comparison.
@@JohnSmith-zl8rz In some ways yes, however the dynamic range often greatly suffers. This is of course a generalisation for the majority of releases. There are some remasters releases that maintain good dynamic range.
Totally agree. I even prefer CD to Vinyl. I am using a Cyrus CDi with Psx-r Cyrus 8 vs2 with Psx-r and a Cyrus monoblock with Psx-r. They are all on a Hark rack hooked up to some B&W CM10 speakers. Maybe it is psychosomatic, but streamed music just sounds too compressed when I have demo'ed it. Vinyl has great atmosphere, but lacks the detail of CD. A good video, thankyou. You have my CDi and Cyrus 8 vs2 with you at the moment for servicing, so please don't be too long. I am using my spare CD7 and Cyrus 7 amp until they come back from you. Nice T-shirt by the way....any chance you guys can put and XL one in with my units before you send them back? ;-)
It all depend on the quality of the source recording/mix. Lossless streaming is identical to CD. Vinyl (and any analog medium) is an inferior format but sometimes the source recording/mix is better.
I agree with the logic presented here, but streaming and NAS drives are great for everyday convenience. We are often told that shorter signal paths are desirable in hifi. That must include home networks ? I wonder though, if Cyrus has any intention of making a music server (such as the Naim Core, or an Innuos Zen) in the future ?
@@HareDeLune I was thinking about my own personal network, which has a 12 metre -ish ethernet cable between the streamer and the router. My comment about shortest signal paths refers more to the internals of hifi components really, but every element in the signal path of a system will have an effect to a greater or lesser degree, I think.
@@derekgooding9379 Yes, and well, I admit I was being a bit snarky. My biggest objection to something like streaming services is the economic model they use. Subscription services are the hot new thing right now. Why make a thing and sell it once, when you can have customers send you an endless stream (pardon the pun) of money? It's a vulgar and detestable display of sheer greed, and is taking over as the new economic model for every kind of media, from music to movies to gaming. For some reason that I can't fathom, large numbers of people seem to be accepting it willingly, as if they are just made of money! Yes! Here you go! I have *way* too much of the stuff already, so I'll pay money *every* *month* to twenty different companies, then wonder why I don't have enough to pay the rent (another 'subscription'). Sheer folly, if you ask me. Getting back to Hi-Fi. Short signal paths are generally good, yes. However, there are always exceptions to everything. For example, Speaker cable should never be shorter than eight feet in length, but Interconnect cables shouldn't go over about two or three feet. The three key areas that have the greatest effect on sound quality are Noise in the signal, as discussed in this video, and also Electromagnetic Fields, and Vibration and Resonance. The more you can control those three areas, the better the sound quality you will be able to achieve in your system. Depending on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go, you will eventually find that everything has an effect on sound quality, from the architecture of your listening room to the material the circuit boards in your equipment is made from.
"Shortest signal path" doesn't apply in networking... Bandwidth does. Streaming use buffering, the worst case would be music pausing because the buffer is empty. In that case, play will resume when buffer gets at a certain level. No lost of quality and no jittering as certain peddlers want you to believe...
I have no doubt cd is better. for all the reasons explained in the video but also because you can find and buy the best master with a cd whereas streaming you typically get the version they decide to give you. With older music where there may have been a number of different releases there can be very significant differences in sound quality. I prefer to choose the best version I can find and own it which is impossible with streaming. The artists benefit too if you buy a new cd as they make more money from it.
CD is a good storage media, but the quality of source is the most important. So you can end up having an average version on CD and a better one on streaming, or the opposite! Lossless streaming is as good as any CD, bits are bits and if it's lossless, you'll hear the quality (or the lack of) of the source recording/mixing. When buying a CD, it's yours: You can rip it and put it on a NAS, i find it much more convenient.
Vinyls and tapes are analog all the way and sonically better than cds but cds are more convenient, low maintenance and acceptable sound quality. Those early cd pressings (not from Japan) with a good cd player will definitely out perform any digital streaming devices but streaming is more convenient. The sound from streaming is not as good but without comparison its still acceptable for most people.
Totally FALSE: The Digital CD media is superior to any analog equipment, which end up giving limited and colored sound... Another false claim: CD will outperform any streaming, not at all if using lossless streaming. It'll all depend on the source material, bits are bits played by a CD or streamed from the internet. This is the same for CD vs Vinyl: You can have a better source recording/mix on vinyl and a lesser version on CD, or the opposite. But with a single source recording/mix, the digital version has total fidelity from the source which is really not the case for analog: It is a lesser fidelity media: Colored and limited in separation, lower dynamic range, limited response, etc.
Who's buying the players like this CYRUS?!? - Ugly design, poor and pathetic display, the remote control looks very cheap, CD-loader as in the car's CD-player, display looks like the same one in a children's TOYS and, finally, after pressing the push-button you hear a disgusting sound of "click" - as if a fat flea was cruched. Never would have bought this CD-player, even if it sounded better then any other competitors.
This is marketing at its best... I'm not saying their CD player is bad, it's just that video contains many false claims and cliché to promote their product...
Cds outselling vinyl by millions in units sold. The used CD market is huge. Vinyl still wears out over time and has pops and ticks and distortion and crackling and turntable rumble. Vinyl is overpriced and overhyped.
