Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenweapons.com
Development of the CZ-2000 began in the 1970s as a replacement for the vz.58 rifle. The project was named "Lada", and was essentially an improved AK-74 rifle chambered for the 5.45x39mm cartridge. The new rifle was mechanically an AK, but had a number improved features including a thumb-operated safety/selector switch, aperture sights mounted on an improved receiver cover, and a compact sidefolding stock. By the late 1980s rifles were going into limited initial production for troop trials, which were finalized in late 1989 - just as the Velvet Revolution overturned the government.
When the aftermath of the political changes began to shake out, the new Czech Republic was looking to the West and NATO for affiliation, and the 5.45mm cartridge no longer made a lot of sense. Instead, CZ redesigned the rifle to chamber the 5.56mm NATO round, and renamed it the CZ-2000 to sound a bit more modern. Three variations were made; a short barreled "submachien gun" version, a rifle/carbine version, and a light machine gun version with a longer barrel and bipod. The rifle was not successful in military trials, and was eventually dropped by CZ in favor of the rifle that would become the CZ805 "Bren".

As far as AK variants go, this AK variant is very AK-like in how it looks and functions like a AK. But don't let yourself be bamboozled, it's actually a car.

The selector switch has a story to it that was taught to czech soldiers as a way to remember the positions (the same selector is on the Vz. 58). You should shoot no rounds to the ground (down/safe) all the rounds towards the enemy (forward/ full auto) and when overwhelmed by the enemy one for yourself (backward/ single shot).

It’s rather interesting, perhaps telling, that the Czechs, having recognized the potential merits of the smaller 5.45 cartridge (and eventually 5.56) vs 7.62x39 decided to make an AK-clone for it, rather than simply making a 5.45 version of the vz.58. I realize there do exist 5.56 versions of the vz.58 but these are recently-made for the commercial market.

that blue handguard looks like it's 3d-printed, since it's got those like, raster lines from the nozzle moving back and forth. can't really say for sure but the color is somethign that looks like 3d printing plastic and the general sheen on the material looks like stuff i've seen printed too. neat stuff
@FreeOfFantasy
@FreeOfFantasy 5 лет назад
Looking at the straight side surfaces and the inside of the holes at the top at 9:25, I would say milled with a CNC. I still have no clue why somebody would use blue instead of black, but maybe that was the material at hand.

@gavindavies793
@gavindavies793 5 лет назад
I'd say 3d printed too by the looks. The colour? Personally, on an unobtainium gun, I wouldn't want to appear to be making faked/repro parts, so had it been me I'd have either a) printed the new part with some writing inside confessing it's a repro, or b) just used a different colour. So maybe that's the reason?
@Atownforevilones
@Atownforevilones 5 лет назад
I thought the same. The lines and color looked like it could have been 3d printed, or cnc milled. That would almost make it worth buying a 3d printer. I you used the right stuff you could probably fab a lot of hard to get bits.

(now I am 22), but i have never ever heard about this weapon !!!!! and I am 1000% sure that most of Czech people dont know about this gun either. Everybody knows just vz 58, some people call it AK even here in CZ, but this ? :D I think the most unusual thing of this AK is that nobody knows it :D
@Lidoott
@Lidoott 5 лет назад
There is a good reason nobody knows about it. It was obsolete the minute it left drawing board. Its not just the money issue, but the rifle was never fielded because of the "not enough improvement over the vz. 58 and therefore not worth the effort"... If we had this gun as a standard issue, there is no way Czech army would be able to change to Bren A1/A2 - because "you just got that "new" 2000 lada...!"

I don't think I've seen a gun with a rollcage as a sight-protector before 😲 It makes sense tho; you don't need any heavy duty machines to bend a wire, like you need if you want to press or machine it.

Development of LADA took really long, also because russians refused to provide specs of 5,45x39 ammo. So developers basically bought some rounds from russian ocupants, and started reverse engineering of round.

But with ability to shoot precisely. Small country, small army, no place for Soviet "Hurrah" actions in style of "There's plenty of us" (нас много)
@alienwizard9765
@alienwizard9765 5 лет назад
@@PavelNygryn You forgot to mention: 1 rifle for 3 soldiers, NKVD shooting you in the back and 20 million people getting killed by Stalin himself. During the battles, Soviets didn't have advantage in numbers over Axis - army sizes weren't too different, and many times Soviet troops were poorly positioned and, because of that, outnumbered by Axis troops. Soviet army did suffer more casualties, but mostly during the beginning of the war, because preparations weren't complite, etc. Also, what do you mean by "shoot precisely"? There are a few changes regarding the ergonomics, but the overal mechanism is unchanged. Is it still jiggling like an AK while firing? If yes (which is probably the case), how exactly is it going to "shoot precisely"?
@PavelNygryn
@PavelNygryn 5 лет назад
@@alienwizard9765 It's not jiggling nearly as much as AK-74. Probably different tolerances in part manufacturing. "There's plenty of us" refers to top-level commands. Lives of individual soldiers were not considered as values. It's kind of making sense - training and equipments expenses for most of "basic" soldiers were low (if any). Some were actually referred as "untrainable" a still send to combat . Czechoslovakian army never used this approach.
@alienwizard9765
@alienwizard9765 5 лет назад
@@PavelNygryn What time period are you referring to? If you are talking about WWII period - as I said, preparations and industrialisation weren't complite. There're many myths regarding the high command during WWII about generals simply sending troops to death, because they didn't care - such things might've happenned sometimes, but definitely not regularly. Moreover, even during that war Soviet army was the only one that was equiped with SMG's in great numbers. It also the second to have assault rifles, and first to equip the whole army with them. If you are referring to post-WWII period, then you have to keep in mind that Soviet Union had to be rebuild after the war. You also have to keep in mind that after Khrushev came to power, USSR have slowly been losing it's economy and production, army have been degrading too. Soviet Union was also preparing to defend against US, so huge amount of equipment had been made. And all things above resulted in huge stockpiles of outdated equipment that were very expensive to replace. About training - as I said, army have been degrading, so by the time Afgan war began, Soviets hadn't used US' expirience with Vietnam war, which resulted in conscripts being sent to fight (some of which weren't well-trained), and not being prepared for . In Vietnam US army had the same problem - preparing for massive conflict with USSR. But they were able to fix it afterwards. These problems have haunted Soviet Union and still haunt Russia as a result: preparing for massive breakthrough, but after realising that things aren't going to happen that way, not being able to change the doctrine. You also have to remember that socialist Czechoslovakia had very powerful economy, in many cases even better production then Soviet Union, and didn't have to maintain as big and as powerful army.
