Hi Tyler! Appreciate you making this video, it's well done! I upgraded all of my older CZ .22lr rifles to the 457 after picking up a CZ American 457 .17 HMR and finding that for me, it was the perfect action and over-all rifle design. I field shoot and informally target shoot year round, to keep in shape and good form and these rifles are great for that. My most used 22 rifle is a CZ Royal that I equipped with a Vortex Tactical 4-12x scope on a Area 419 30moa rail. I shoot CCI Velocitors in it for field and long distance, but it will shoot like a target rifle when I switch to target grade ammo! It's one of the most accurate sporter 22 rifles that I have seen and does give my MTR a run using the right ammo! That MTR shoots an average group of .719 at 100 yards, so the Royal is earning its keep. I have a CZ Trainer that I'm glad I picked up, since CZ isn't making this basic model now in 2022. I leave it open sighted for old times sake... It is another very accurate rifle. The American in 17 HMR will often put three shots well inside a dime at 100 yards, and generally shoots extremely well for a sporter. There are a lot of real good 22 rifles around these days that shoot very well. I like CZ because they are an all around great, traditional style rifle and they provide reliable, accurate service.

There have been tests of the effects of barrel length on accuracy using 1000s of rounds with different ammo. 16 inch and 24 inch barrels were compared on the same gun. The result was that the longer barrel provided more consistent accuracy, at the price of about 50 fps in muzzle velocity. Generally testers do a poor job of explaining this, but from a physics perspective, I am shocked no one mentions the effect of rifling. Bullets don’t immediately assume the rotation rate of the rifling, but rather “spin up” to the rifling in the bore. This takes time and a longer barrel allows more energy to be transfered into bullet rotation which is key to in-flight stability. The barrels on the 455 and 457 are, as far as I know, interchangeable, and since you are using a sled, the main difference in the two guns isn’t the cosmetics of the stock, but barrel length. To me, it appears the 457 created more tight groups, and I suspect this is strictly due to its longer barrel.
@chippyjohn1
@chippyjohn1 3 года назад
Your analogy does not make sense. Bullet needs more time to spin up, but longer barrel slows it down. Also the bullet does assume the rotation rate of the barreling straight away, except that as the bullet accelerates it's rpm increases as its velocity increases. But as you mentioned a longer barrel slowing it down, wouldn't the longer barrel be less accurate? It's impossible to compare two different barrels, crown could be different, vibration harmonics, weight of barrel, rigidity of barrel, ammunition, etc.
@dilvishpa5776
@dilvishpa5776 3 года назад
@@chippyjohn1 I am going to dismiss your comment as pure nonsense. To claim that a bullet achieves its rotational energy in time t=0 demonstrates total lack of understanding of basic physics. To be able to do as you claim, an infinite amount of energy would need to be available, which is clearly not true. Then, the rest if your argument is simply hand-waving. In a .22 caliber rifle, the cross-sectional area, which accepts the pressure that accelerates the bullet is unfavorable when compared to the circumference which produces the surface area that provides the friction that slows the bullet in the barrel, so generally anything over, I believe, 18” slows the bullet. However, who says that muzzle velocity is the prime determinant in regards to accuracy?
@oneheadlight8000
@oneheadlight8000 2 года назад
22LR load groups in a 16 vs 20 inch barrel were indistinguishable in that same testing.. I am not disagreeing with you but adding to your comment. You get more noticeable improvement moving from 16 to 24 than you do from 16 to 20.. most hunters would opt for a short barrel / light weight but if you are bench shooting then it only makes since to go heavier and longer and tune the harmonics for your particular firearm / load.
@dilvishpa5776
@dilvishpa5776 2 года назад
@@oneheadlight8000 I don’t disagree. I am simply referring to statistics generated with 1000+ shots of a CZ457 with differing barrel lengths. I am a scientist. When the evidence contradicts the theory, it is typically the theory that needs “adjustment” to refine our understanding.

The 457 comes in about 11 or so stock variations. The 457 AT-ONE Varmint doesn’t use a CZ stock … it uses the Boyds AT-ONE stock which, with its adjustable for comb and length, is more a competition stock than a traditional hunting stock. You can get the same looking stock as the 455 in the 457 if you want it.

Problem with this platform is constant lack of magazine availability for CZ 452/455/457 rifles. This issue has been ongoing for years. When they are in stock, they can be $50 plus. Guys have been paying $70-$100 each, so a handful of mags can cost more than the rifle. Get it together, CZ.
