ERiK of TenkaraGuides.com shows how to setup a Czech rig with a tenkara rod (the Amago), and catches a fish first cast.
For detailed info during the video, you can enable annotations. It's the "word bubble" next to the closed caption button. If it's red, then it's on.
Enjoy.

Chris, Good question. Braided line is best when it is warmer than freezing since the line holds water. Fluorocarbon works year round. I typically use fluoro most of the time because I tend to have it laying around in different colors, whereas I have to go to the store to get braided line. Braided line also gives a little more sensitivity, but can be blown around in the wind. Thanks for watching! ERiK

Ron, thanks for the comment. The setup is very simple - just a couple of different colored indicator lines and 4x tippet to a couple of flies. The video is a spur of the moment, real life, indication of what Czech nymphing is and what it takes to setup a line from scratch. ERiK

Eric, I set up the leader system for my Yamame as in your video and caught a 15" and a few minutes later a 14" brown trout. It was awesome. I can't thank you enough. Steve

Two colors are used to help indicate your depth, and fluoro tippet is used to help sink the lines. Level lines just don't sink as well as fluoro, plus the higher vis can spook fish more.

Good catch! That's the way we normally fish in Japan for trout.

you use two colors for contrast in different lighting conditions straight line nymphing is way, way more sensitive than an indicator.

The one thing you didn't talk about in your setup is where on the link you put the split shot. I also didn't see that covered on your web site either.

So this is different from dapping how? And please - a strike indicator is just a bobber folks ... they basically function the same way as that red and white thing you put on the end of your line when you fished for sunfish with worms ...

@BigC1758 It is actually simpler than it is being portrayed here. Erik had some organizational skills issues.

Haven't ever fished with the Yamame, but any stiff tenkara rod should be able to pull it off. I think the Iwana could be another Tenkara USA rod that might be able to handle the weight.

You should've mentioned that the tippet length depends on the depth and surroundings, it would be impossible to fish this rig if it was a shallow creek with no space behind. I had 3 feet tippet on my tenkara when I fished in such conditions.

I don't get the need for the two colors of leader materials. Wouldn't a strike indicator be more useful closer to the water?

Paleozon, You are completely correct. This was an impromptu video with absolutely no preparation. John just said, "This would be a really good time to make a video." So we made a video. We do plan to make better videos with better clarity in the future.

@TenkaraGuides

Your comment is exactly correct. Tenkara is not designed to catch big steelhead and what not. However, Tenkara rods can catch bigger fish than most people believe. I've heard of 2' long bull trouts and know a few friends that have caught fish in the 26" range. As with any tool, you use it for what it's designed for. You wouldn't go for Makos with an 8 weight, and you wouldn't go for small stream trout with an 8 weight either. Pick the tool for the job! ERiK

Erik I have fished in Yellowstone a number of times with my brothers and our friends who are too numerous to mention at this time. My brother, Dr. Steve Carpenter, usually arranges in advance fishing guides from time to time as he feels the need arises and we usually retain at least 1x guide on a given trip or fishing junket you might say. All of our lodgings are no problem because he has a luxurious cabin estate aleady about 30 miles from West Yellowstone. So we will try to stay in touch perhaps via social media or something but of course we have your website which is all really that is needed. Thank you for a very professional fishing video. 7/5/2020 SRC

@Tenkara guides. Boy you said something there. Coulda made 2 videos. 1.Tenkara set up rig (maybe at the truck sans all the noise n maybe more stable/sober cameraman). 2. You actually catching fish. BTW, I skipped forward, did you even show what flies you used?? Just curious.

Love how a lot of the snob fly fishermen critique ever detail of anyone's video. Must be the day and age we live live in. always critical of someone who isn't you. First while this may have taken 12 minutes to rig and catch a fish it's twelve min. I've been out with a regular rod watching guys take 30 minutes to rig up just to watch them throw the line in a few times and then go back to rigging a new set up. By that standard this is far quicker. Hmm. Second, I'm no pro. But holy cow "TECHNICALITIES" I enjoy simplicity. But hello. Czech nymphing. French nymphing, high stickin whatever you wanna call it, did he catch a fish with the method? Hmm seems like it worked. I didn't know we were scored and graded on our technical ability. Guess that's the pros for ya!! Lastly. You all posting negative comments post some of your videos rigging up spur of the moment. Once a critic all way a critic. Good video guys I'll make sure I rig some lines before I go that way I can be even quicker.

I'm sure you know what you're talking about but I can't hearrrrrrrrrrrrrr youuuuuuuuuuu. #1 rule in instructional video production: audio quality is actually more important than video quality. It's like having a teacher at the front of a classroom while someone's running a jackhammer at your feet. Would be great if you dubbed over the audio or even added subtitles to this video so we could learn a thing or two.

This is tenkara, not dapping, and this czech nymphing because czech nymphing is short distance, usually directly under the rod tip and with a tight line. It is not French nymphing because French nymphing has a very long line usually fished across or upstream and usually a Farley shallow riffles or for very wary fish and usually uses very lightweight flies. Czech nymphing uses medium to heavyweight flies. Czech nymphing is not polish nymphing and French nymphing is not Spanish nymphing

Well on top of what other comments have already said, you may want to shorten up your video, 11 minutes of watching someone tying knots and 1 minute of fighting a fish is quite boring. This is more just dapping than tenkara fishing.

@@stancarpenter7358 You were there with 'Erik' 9 years back, interrupting his fishing and videoing way before the date you posted - the Fourth of July 2020 (during a pandemic) and failed to share with him and his buddy the information you posted above with the same date? You didn't brag up your brother, your loaner luxurious cabin estate or the number of guides hired and you actually saw him pick up the line tags he clipped off along with all his other debris when he could barely find his two-toned heavy line section in the waist-high grass and weeds? Most likely ended up in an otter's belly. Actually glad he was out of fluorocarbon - that stuff takes forever to disintegrate in fresh water. Here on the Beaverhead where floating is the $$$ game guides use weights and more weight and multiple flies. A guide friend, the late great Tim Mosolf, who guided there for over 30 years told me in a typical day with two fisherman in the boat they lose on average just under a dozen snagged rigs per fisherman. That's per ONE boat which is usually followed by 10-30 or even more boats each day. One fly is usually snagged and the other(s) dance(s) in the flow to be hit by another fish which cannot escape and dies connected to the snag, which local wading fisherman come upon often, usually by also snagging a foot on the lost rig. Mono works; we've used it exclusively until just a decade or so back. If it sinks just slightly more quickly than mono is it really worth it? One more thing, this vid was posted 9 years ago - you were there in October of 2011 and clearly remember him cleaning up every single bit of his mess? Doesn't really add up. Dubious.
