TENKARA YEAR 3, Summer fishing for warm weather species
I was walking with my friend in a Madison, Wisconsin park. I had seen large fish in Mendota on previous park visits, so I brought my fishing gear with. And sure enough I had some surprisingly BIG fish encounters this day! and after lunch a big SNAP! Let me know in the comments what you think happened.

Yes side to side is a better way to play out any fish especially a large one. I kinda equate it to keeping them off balance. Pull to the right they put to the left and vice versa well most time. When on a short line it is even more important and some time you may have to run with them till you regain control.

Thanks for the tip Richard and thanks for watching! Hopefully I'll get more practice on some carp again and other big species.

Carp are tough….get them on side pressure as soon as possible….if you can’t turn them and keep them moving side to side…you are kinda eff’d. Ive never fished a Hellbender, but have caught a ton on a TUSA Amago and a WTR T-Hunter. They’re super heavy fish, so having the rod straight up in the air is a recipe for a breakage (not that I’ve ever done that 😉) …anyhoo, cool video and thanks for sharing
@tenkaragenki
@tenkaragenki Год назад
Yeah I def didn't windshield wiper that carp! 😅 I'd say the hellbender is equal to the amago and idk if my amago would have held up either. But yeah, bad technique and a big fish is a bad equation. Lol But I tried. Thanks for watching!

You need to look into a Wasatch tenkara rod, they have a lifetime warranty for if there rod breaks in normal use like your hellbender did in the video. They also have the rodzilla which is a 16ft/17.5ft zoom rod for BIG fish emphasis on big

hey cool vid! Brought back memories of when I used to fish those lakes many, many years ago, before I turned into a trout only snob.😆 Anyways, I don't know a lot about tenkari rods, but if I would fly fish the Madison chain, I would use my 8wt. It is a heavier purpose rod, meant for large flies and bigger fish. Peace out bro! ☮

Never max out your leader strength. Use one size lower. The leader is supposed to break before the rod breaks. The only way a rod could break with the above setup is if the carbon fiber on the rod was chipped or cracked.
@tenkaragenki
@tenkaragenki Год назад
Gotcha. The rod had a ton of use, I should probably take care of it better. Clean it every month or so. Thanks for the tips Rick!
@RickMidds
@RickMidds Год назад
You’re welcome. If you didn’t already know this, The Hellbender rod is rated for tippet size up to 3x or approx. 8.5lb. line. I generally use 4x tippet (approx. 6lb. Line) most of the time with it. The 4x is a lighter strength than the 3x. It’s cheaper and easier to replace a broken tippet than a broken rod. By the way Dragontail is a great company with excellent support for their customers. I bet if you sent them a short email describing the problem and a link to your video they would send you replacement parts immediately for free. If they don’t it’s only a few dollars for those parts and you will be back fishing in no time. 😉👍

That rod broke for one reason only bad fighting technique. Go to Dragon Tail Tenkara or Chris Stewart's website both have great sections on how to fight large fish. I have landed many carp 30 plus inches on a 4 wt st.croix rod with 5 x Tippett in fast moving water. I never lost a fish or broke the rod. That rod cost just about $130.00 in the mid 1980's. Not to say I didn't have to chase them a bit at times.

I own both the Hellbender and the Rodzilla. Bass on the Hellbender is generally fine but the Rodzilla is a much better rod when it comes to the bigger fish. I caught a Musky on my Rodzilla. No way would I attempt it with the Hellbender. Just saying.

Never hold your rod at suck a back angle . When fighting big fish it should be at 12:00 or 1-2 at the most . Not back at 3-4 like you have it in this video ,

@@tenkaragenki Off the top of my head i can't remember what the rod says it will take before it brakes the rod. I buy tippet sets 1x 2x 3x or 4x 5x 6x from RIO powerflex its pretty cheap so i always have what i need to fit the rods weight rating.
