One of Liszt's most inspired lyrical inspirations. This beautiful melody in D flat major is full of expressive yearning.
Cziffra's poetic playing brings out the character of the music ideally while his effortless digital dexterity means the cadenza style passages shimmer like star dust.
The third of three Concert Etudes, 'Un sospiro' (a sigh) is not thought to be Liszt's own title.
The three Etudes were originally entitled, 'Trois caprices poetiques.'

Cziffra truly makes this sound like it's being played by two separate pianos. Absolutely incredible sound and the effect is exactly what Liszt wanted. Wow. I only wish the piano was better in tune so this sparkling interpretation would shimmer even more.

This is it, when Cziffra plays Liszt, Liszt comes to life. OMG this is so good. Imagine you play like this, or even better you compose like this,

The initial arpeggios start off slow and get faster still maintaining the clarity, if you close your eyes it almost sounds like a harp

By far the best version by the master

Oh wow this is marvelous. I still don't understand why Cziffra is not as popular as horowitz. Cziffra was the real deal, I read "des canons et des fleurs" i highly recommend this book to understand the artist better. Thanks for sharing the music.

Even Horowitz himself once said he admired Cziffra's techniques!

Zciffra was way better than Horowits both in technique and interpretations

The simple answer, imo, is because he lived in France and not America. Post WW2, American ascendance to primacy in terms of cultural proliferation and economic dominance ensured that American players, or at least ones who made their home there, or had American press and booking agents, got promoted while musicians you lived in Europe, or Russia (America's arch nemesis), weren't as visible even if vastly superior. Growing up in North America (Canada), I had never even heard Sviatoslav Richter until I was in my 20s, which is just crazy. Thank God for RU-vid, that's all I can say.

Such a gorgeous interpretation-such expressive nuances! So smooth in the opening arpeggios. So many others sound like a thunderous herd of horses! This is my favorite piece and probably my favorite interpretation! I do think Victor Borga played this beautifully, too, although this may be better. But I wish someone would post Victor’s performance. I’ve only found it on dvd as part of a complete concert.

"Cziffra is only a virtuoso of smashing the piano." Okay, you fools, listen to this performance and change your mind. 😄

@@cziffrathegreat666 It actually does not sound great: the piano needs tuning and is not recorded very favorably. (Great playing though.)
