Sounds great! How did you record this? Was it the Fishman plugged straight-in or did you use a microphone?

Hi! Here's how I set it up: I always start by setting up a condenser mic 12 inches away facing the guitar's 12th fret. It's my 12/12 rule. A person can tweak mic placement from there, but it's a great place to start :)

In my humble opinion, this video, like the other recent D’angelico videos, comes across as an infomercial. There should be disclaimers provided for these types of videos that stipulates the relationship, if there is one, between the parties. Is this a paid advertisement? Are they a paid sponsor? Was the instrument provided free or was it provided at a reduced cost? I believe a viewer should be provided this information, especially if they are using these videos for the purpose of a future purchase. Don’t get me wrong, this is a very professional video completed by a very knowledgeable and skilled person, which in my opinion makes it even more important to provide any relevant information.

Well, now, just when I've convinced myself I don't have a need for another guitar, you pull this one on me, Darrell. It sounds beautiful, balanced tones, and a perfect compromise between a nylon classical vs steel string. Aesthetics are very pleasing.

It really does sound wonderful. I just wonder how much of it is you and your playing and equipment, and not the guitar. It is tempting. In my opinion, it sound like the Martin 000-28 modern deluxe at about 20 percent of the price.

Nice demo, Darrell, as usual. Acoustic-electrics are really my default choice, and have been for years. This one is gorgeous, sounds great, and I've always liked D'Angelico's Art Deco touches, from the stairstepped truss rod cover to the tuning knobs (and on this one, the bridge). I think you're spot-on about the neck finish, and I agree about the tone - balanced and usable - and a small body is always a plus for this player.

Darrell, can you explain, maybe in a video, the basic question of why so few acoustic guitars do not offer cutaway shapes. It seems like few higher end instruments offer cutaways. It’s usually the cheaper instruments. Is it just tradition? Or is there a noticeable sound difference? So many times I find myself saying, “I would buy that acoustic if I just had better access to the upper frets.” Sigh.
@KevinORourke25
@KevinORourke25 5 лет назад
Fender makes a travel guitar with a cutaway. With a small guitar body a cut away decreases the volume output significantly.

Sounds great. I just can't get by that head stock. It makes the guitar look oddly out of proportion. Superficial? Yes. A guitar's looks are very important to me in terms of enticing me to pick it up and play. Thanks for the video Darrell. Kevin

Erwin Matthew Hoffmann De Alarcón I bought an Ovation Balladeer back in 1975 when they were still a pretty new company. I was very young, and I really bought into their claims about "the latest technology," and "designed to focus ALL of the sound out through the sound hole," and so on. I really should have spent a lot more time, playing a few in the store, but like I said, they were a new design and there just weren't that many around. Plus, I was just out of basic training and in tech school, so I just didn't have a lot of spare time...so I just bought it. And soon wished I had not. It just sounded weak, with no projection and very little to like in the tone department. Now that was a LONG time ago and things may have changed a lot...but I suggest you spend as much time as you can with as many of them as you can, in a music store, with many other actual wooden guitars as you can before buying one. You may LOVE them...or not. You may even own one now. They're not for everybody, but for some, they're the only guitar they like.

I had an Ovation Custom Legend purchased in 1978 . Wonderful guitar with nice tone equivalent to a martin D18. It was stolen in 1984 at a gig I was playing at. I tried Ovation again to replace it, They are not the same anymore. I can't recreate the sound I had on the origional. Trying out the ones today, it is a brand to stay away from. All I have played look and sound terrible.

Wouldn't it have been better if this guitar had a cutaway? For the way you've been playing... doing so much fingerstyle, I mean this guitar is very good for fingerstyle, and this full body shape has limitations as you cannot access the higher frets...

I like watching your acoustic videos (like the Godin). D'Angelico guitars are making nice guitars at reasonable prices. The style of the Tammany is a great looker; most guitars like Martins. It's unique. It sounds excellent for $800 with a new hardshell case. And, unique, again, made with Ebony. I liked the look of the saddle, it has seems they have made it with a router. I wonder how many are selling in the stores. I would guess that it has "curb appeal." Could you do a video for a Takamine soon? I played an EF TT and a Pro Series 3, and I thought they should be more expensive. It would be nice to see an in-depth review. I loved the Jim Adkins Fender/Gibson Tele....I guess I like unique stuff.
@Songwirer

Great video as always! I have a question Darrel. You always talk about straight headstocks and strings for better tune stability (e.g. tele vs LesP). Many acoustics don't have that (except for acoustasonic) and have tension in the nut. Can you please explain if this is relevant in acoustics too? Cheers from London

Hey Darryl! Maybe you could do a short instructional video on how to set the notch filter on acoustic/electric guitars for those who are new to them? The new design is just rubbish !!. Im so mad because of what is happening with D'Angelico right now, I was a huge fan of the old design imperial/art deco style/block inlay guitars, all that fancy look.. Was thinking about buying my 3rd D'Angelico, but I will never, NEVER EVER buy a "new design" D'angelico .. where is their split Headstock ? where are the block inlays? the ebony fingerboard is replaced with some cheap material, the soul of their guitars is gone, now you cannot tell a difference between a cheap aliexpress guitar, and new D'Angelico design guitars... they hired the wrong person, or something is going terribly wrong with their vision.. The old look was what really made them stand out out of hundreds of brands
