I played this module back in the 80s, and yes, we all died. But after watching your video, I think it could be the perfect module for a DCC funnel.

Agree. Mostly puzzles with little combat. I think it would be easy to convert to a DCC funnel.

The S series were all "special" modules and were marketed as such. All were a ton of fun too, including S1 which we played through back in '79. The 5th Edition redo is more survivable. Bringing an Umber Hulk helped us back then more than we knew until afterwards.

I really enjoy this format of video! If you have any Planescape modules to go over, that could be fun!

Yes! Another vote for Planescape from me too!

You put out a video like this every Monday your gonna go off. Us DM’s are lazy and love to steal content that is easily digestible like this. Keep up the great work 😊

Thank you! Currently not planned as weekly (I simply can't read that fast, as much as I wish I could), but there should be about 2-3 a month.

I'm so glad this came onto my timeline out of nowhere, a very enjoyable breakdown of the good and the bad of the infamous Tomb. I don't know whether Dungeon Magazine is outside your options, but the Mud Sorcerer's Tomb was designed as a "spiritual successor" to Tomb of Horrors and is frequently lauded as one of the best things to come from Dungeon Magazine. I read it and it was, in my opinion, worse than the Tomb of Horrors in nearly every way. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on it.

As someone who never got to experience ANY modules, thos was incredibly enjoyable going through and learning about gaming history.

I think this will be a good series. For me, I like to run modules for more Solo D&D, for when I don't have a group to play with, yet some time to play. Something real puzzle heavy, would not be the best since I'd have to read how to solve the puzzle which defeats the purpose, but I use a lot of random tables to see how my characters would react to traps and such to help eliminate the meta-game aspects. It would be nice to find more modules that would fit a more solo or dmless style of play. It's really hard for me to not over think world creation, even with random tables to help generate quests and dungeons, to keep it still fresh to play it myself. This was a cool module to learn about, and like you said some aspects were kind of cool, but the unfairness, and actively trying to kill players is just not fun. I don't like for games to have no risk, but if someone dies I want it to be because they did something silly or dumb or they had a bad string of dice rolls. As long as it makes a good story, death can be great. Touching a pillar randomly and levitating into a demon mouth is not a great story.

Great vid, I’m going to love this series. Love it when you talk D&D and your dad sounds awesome. Thinking thief might not be a bad choice. Unsure if basic D&D thieves had similar thing in 2e thieves could detect and remove traps so they would theoretically have a better chance of detecting traps and hidden doors. They could also climb walls, not sure if that would be useful as unsure of verticality of this dungeon.

I still say any characters that survived this dungeon only did so through the grace of their DM.

You think you’re gonna cover its sequel at some point, Return to the Tomb of Horrors?

you have to be super pedantic and obnoxious to defeat that dungeon and btw even if you did. you didn't know the stats of the boss or how to harm it. also, try getting a rogue to throw away his money to save his life. LOL
