A year from now, maybe more, some Critter will accidentally stumble upon this and realise that this is how it all began... After countless hours of supreme D&D entertainment and tens of thousands of dollars donated to charities. It all began with some amazing people sitting in a room and deciding to share it with a small Twitch audience :) Also, Matthew Mercer does the most amazing job as DM. I never even knew it could be taken to such levels.
+Bjørn Andreasen "A year from now, maybe more, some Critter will accidentally stumble upon this and realise that this is how it all began..." And I am that guy.....
What makes the Keyleth goldfish incident where she says "it's fine, we're gods" is that later on they actually meet Pelor the sun God, Ioun the Goddess of knowledge, Saren Rae the (I don't actually know of what) Goddess, and also to a lesser extent the Raven Queen face to face, and you realize how misplaced Keyleth's confidence was.
5 years isn't really that long in those terms past a certain age, provided you stay healthy and don't do drugs. And Sam can change between looking 55 and 25 depending on his facial hair anyway.
* Pulls out fedora * Acckkkttuuaallyyy ... They became Vox Machina after saving the leaders of Emon, since they didnt wanna be introduced as The S.H.I.T. (? *sic*?)
you can see the passion in Matt's eyes when he's explaining about the website and bios and all i can say is, quoting Liam himself "Best thing they ever did!" not only did they make an AWESOME game, i think they personally contributed to the rise in popularity of D&D again
For sure, even with the new group I'm playing with - most of whom have never touched D&D before - always talked about Critical Role. It's amazing how far they've come, and what they've done for D&D.
Just posting this for posterity... Matt's just released Adventurers' Guide To Wildmount, in partner with WoTC 😁. Note for history, the world is also mid-Coronavirus lockdown and Matt piloted the joint decision to release the guidebook for free trial during the pandemic, the book is roundly well received by CR fans and non-fans alike. Let's keep watching where this glimpse into history keeps taking these wonderful human beings! The story is swiftly becoming legend, has led to terms like "The Matt Mercer Effect/Affect", and so on. They're continuing to make history!
@@Ryotbh They've even mentioned that in interviews. The attitude was like "I mean, there's stuff like Acquisitions Inc., sure, it's not unprecedented... but they got a webcomic! People know who they are! ... who's gonna watch us? Eh, could still be fun for a month or two before they cancel us. "
What better line to say here, than the first line of the current theme song of Critical Role... "The adventure begins, they were always beside you" (At least, that is how I heard it anyway)
1:14 Little does Liam know that over 2 years, 115 episodes and more than 500 hours played, there would be 40,000 people tuning in every week. That they created a show that's literally changed lives, created marriages and little critter babies, and inspired thousands of people to play D&D for the first time. Myself included. Critical Role is an amazing show and I can't believe it all started here with a bunch of nerdy people playing for themselves at a dining room table and a request for Liam's birthday.
@@TheLuckySpades The most important thing is to just be yourself and dont try and be matthew mercer just because you've read the rule book from front to back 5 times....its not going to happen lol, just keep it about fun and dont kick yourself over mistakes, its just a game.
@@deanthompson88 No offense but I disagree. When I picked up the DMG for the first time I read it front and back at least twice so I had the rules ready. I was inspired to pull my creativity out from under the rug, originally wanted to be a game designer, and give DnD a shot for the first time. I made it a goal of mine to be as passionate as Mercer is and it has paid off tremendously. This is all coming from a zero experience player after watching the very first episode live. My point is, go for it. Imitation is a great start to find oneself from other inspiration. Who cares if you get kicked down trying to imitate or play off that style. Your table will be grateful for the simple fact you're running a game.
@DJ KO dayum you really are in drunk and pissed mode, or just really mad and hate commenting for all the anger you still manage to cram into so few letters lmao. Kinda funny tbh. I hope that's the real intent, cuz it's hard to take ya serious, brah.
Watching the Legend of Vox Machina an Amazon Prime, learning it was a streamed table top rpg, learning they were all friends who had been role playing for years before, and then finding this gem of a video. What a great story of determination and friendship.
@@OGEdgercut to 4 months after that and ..... I don't know, all their stuff is awesome but it's too hard to keep track of. I'm desperately trying to catch-up on campaign 3. P.s. next person to comment should be about how great season 3 is and "that moment" was animated perfectly.
@@Ziaotic Theres a bunch of fan made songs out there. I think the most popular is Melancholy of a Sapphire. This little animatic uses it in their video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6bBochbAbDQ.html
2019: Critical Role has recently become fully independent. Their kickstarter for an animated special has surpassed $5,000,000 in just 2 days, far beyond their $750,000 goal and all stretch goals. I'm here now to reflect on how far these wonderful people have come. How the characters they played in this home game are getting their own animated series. Though Orion fell off on their meteoric rise due to some unclear circumstance, they've all maintained this energy of humble excitement, a desire to share a part of themselves and allow people to take a chance on their crazy endeavors. To trust Matt's brain and each of their individual creative hearts to deliver something worthwhile, to much success. Here's to you Critters! and here's to you, Critical Role.
@DJ KO oh, they do. And not just kiss-asses. Really, are you just hate watching and hate commenting, lol? Too bad. There must be something that gets you excited aside from hate?
"And... and could we have themes again?" Well, dear Ashley-of-the-past... after seeing the newest update of your cartoon you don't have to worry about that, you just have to wait around six years :)
Strange to think the whole thing started as you and Sam Riegel trying to find something to do, hooking up with Mercer and the gang to play a single game of D&D to just have some fun, before proceeding to get hooked and continue it for years. Then this happened, 2+ years down the line and Critical Role came about, through which a community has sprung up and a new wave of Critters and D&D players has sprung. Strange how things tumble from one thing to the next. Here's hoping CR continues for years to come. You guys are awesome.
Wow. I saw this pop up in my feed, and clicked on it, with no idea what it was. I feel like it's July 4th 1776 and I just stumbled into Independence Hall, or December 25th 0001, and I just wandered into a manger in Bethlehem. Truly an inspiring sight to see history in the making. :)
Awwww Orion recorded this. Back when they were just a garage band. Before all the drugs, and sex, and fame, multi-platinum contract with Warner Bros, selling out the Palladium, sleeping with each other, the lies, the reunion tours... wait when did this turn into Fleetwood Mac? I think its nap time for me....
Well, on the sleeping with each others part, I *think* Matt and Marisha already had a thing going; Travis and Laura totally were already together (see his Between the sheets) and of course Liam and Sam were husbands even before they were born (and this joke will never get old)
Oh wow look at that everyone is there, there is sam, ashley and Laura and travis, and liam, marisha then talisan and matt... wait who's holding, the, camer... *it spins around* (sudden scream)
5 years later, Second Campaign. Have their own custom table from wyrmwood. An amazing cast a following. Critical Role is considered one of the best examples to play Table Top RPGs. And Sams character Nott has 1 Manticore Baby kill lol.
Time capsule dated June 2020--100 days of Covidemic: Even introverts are missing human interaction. These candid moments of the group pre-CR are the best. Thank you. I don't want to be too sappy (blame it on the quarantine), but I'm so grateful for the years of entertainment and inspiration Critical Role has given me. All I want in life--more than love, money, or recognition--is a ritual of brunch mimosas and DnD.
Orion has no one but himself to blame for that. Dude could have been part of the colossus that is Critical Role (and taking a fat paycheck, I imagine, as the rest of the cast does), but instead he let his selfishness and poor behavior get in the way. The dude literally fucked himself so hard it's actually unbelievable to me.
It's something I've mentioned to friends who have wondered why Orion was involved. He was seemingly a good guy who sadly fell off the wagon. He had troubles with addiction and his need for cash to fund that habit led him to do some really bad stuff, while the drugs themselves really brought out the worst in him. Is it forgiveable? That's not up to us, it's up to the people involved. Is it understandable? I think so, he certainly isn't the only person who turned to crime to fund a drug habit. On top of his in game frustration with the way his character's mechanics changed in the switch from Pathfinder to 5E. I found his behaviour on stream often offensive, but it is good, I think, to look at the reasons why, and mourn what could have been, rather than pretending he was always a prick.
Matt talking about the whole idea of having websites for their characters and art for each of them so anyone can join right in on the story and Travis just going "fuckin Mercer" loool
Back here watching how it all began as we have just recently finished season 2 and now are looking forward t words season 3. These nerds had no idea what an amazing journey they all started on that that.
Watching this on Oct 12 2017, the live airfare of episode 115; an hour before the final moments of Vox Machina's tale are set to play out. What an incredible journey. Gods bless you all.
This legitimately made me tear up.... holy crap - they all look like kids. And with such a small moment they inspired a massive community, and spurned my own passions as a writer. Why is this making me emote so hard...... :(
And now today they didn't ask for it, they definitely didn't expect it, but they absolutely realize that they've literally saved many people from the brink just by being a creative loving little family. I hope they can continue to bare that burden with the grace and love and care that they've been able to so far all these years later. Kudos/love/respect to them all!!
It's absolutely amazing how far they have! Campaign 3×46, LOVM season 2 and a mighty nein series coming soon. When friends got your back and work together, the sky is just another thing to break through and go higher.
And you guys were still only half as excited as us viewers when we found out. Critical Role is the best show to ever grace the internet. Thanks so much! (oh, and first :P)
+gjaddajg orion made a video about it recently. he left to pursue his own acting career and such and just didn't have time for CR anymore. he said he might eventually be back
***** I have no way to confirm since I don't have a twitter account, but I'll take your word for it. If so it was a recent change though. A little while back there was a huge stink about it, and Orion made some passive-aggressive tweets. As far as Facebook goes, Orion is no longer friends with Matt, Marisha, Laura or Talieson, yet still friends with Travis, Sam and Liam. So take that for what you will. I don't exactly keep up with all of it, so sorry for spreading outdated information.
And little did they know that in just 3 years they would become the face of the game. Causing the biggest D&D revival in history, and have... SPOILERS (Up to S2E50) -Thousands upon thousands of incredible pieces of fan art (I still never skip the art, and have watched every episode), some of which has been immortalised in published books. -Have a published campaign setting with thousands playing games in the same world. -Heavily contributed to many good causes and charities. -Sold out gigs both nationally and internationally. -Become one of the most well attended panels in conventions. -Been animated! (By the amazing Kamille Areopagita and Kevin Areopagita) -Literally saved the lives of some dear critters suffering from depression and other illnesses by their own accounts. I started watching when S1E31 was released, and since then have played hundreds of games, run multiple campaigns and introduced dozens of people to D&D. And it all started with "Welcome to critical role, where a bunch of us nerdy ass voice actors sit around and play dungeons and dragons."
I love you, folks. I know you guys have felt like a second family to each other for awhile now, and all of us critters are lucky enough to kinda feel like extended family at this point. The players and the characters all mean so much to us.
They went from this, a bunch of friends just playing a game at home with each other. All the way to crowd funding an animated special earning one million dollars in 45 minutes. We've come such a long way guys and theres still so much left to do. Heres to many more years of this amazing community and this wonderful cast
Flash forward, You have one of the most popular shows on twitch, A comic, Soon a animated show, and a Fan-base that loves you all to death. Now to collect the eyes.
@@Killian95 its hotly debated about what happened to him within the critical role space. All that's for sure is he was a part of campaign 1 and something caused him to depart, amicably or otherwise.
BigDippas I gotcha I haven’t watched much of the first campaign only got to episode 12 and then my gf wanted to watch so I restarted it and I’m watching campaign 2 by myself and loving it
@@Killian95 I dont blame your gf, the initial video quality is rough to say the least and campaign 2 is definitely the "better" campaign. Though I do hope you and her get to go back and watch campaign 1. Tons of great moments and inside jokes that would be lost on you otherwise. How you and your girl, and both your families stay safe during these times
@@BigDippas I personally like campain 1 much more than the second, i like the second of course but c1 is amazing, it had a rough start with orion and the audio but it is great
I just found this channel and video after watching Critical role ep 22. OMG you guys are legendary. Thank you for the hours of entertainment and DnD while I wait for my own party to finally find a date to play together again. Much love from Belgium!
Could somebody please explain why am I crying? Geez. I know my empathy levels are high but this is the weirdest thing ever. I can't even tell if I'm happy or sad. Peculiar.
This just goes to show you how the simplest little thing can just explode. Could you imagine if some of them said no? Love these people for what they have given me.
Every now and then I come back to watch this, it just gives me such a warm happiness every time. I cannot believe it's been over 7 years and how CR has come!
You guys are definetly bringing the DnD hype back!!! I really enjoy the Critical Role campain, and I hope that you will all continue to stream this amazing game :) The characters and story so far have been really good, and it got me really excited to play the game aswell. I can't wait until the next episode!
I am so glad this show exists. Every week I can't wait to wake up on Fridays to watch the stream back since I can't stay up until 3am here in the UK to watch it. I am already super attached to all the characters, you are all amazing and are definitely making DnD cool (pshht, like it wasn't already!)! Much love
Wow this just popped back up in my feed after donating to the Kickstarter. Seeing this moment is really something special. They HAVE NO IDEA yet of what this moment means for themselves, and for the world.
I have to say that Critical Role is for me the BEST section in the Geek and Sundry twitch channel (which is saying a lot, cause all G&S content is amazing). You guys are f* fun and I love how well you work together. I've always wanted to see a real D&D session, and being able to watch you every single week going through this adventure is just amazing. Matt is literally a master at what he does and you guys rock your characters. I'd love to know more about what you've all been through, so if you eventually post your complete back story let us know! Thank you for making me happy :P and keep going! Go Vax!!
2021. They're still at it. Look at these babies who have no idea what they're going to become. What they're going to do for the d&d community. Merch, animated series, charity foundation, a community based around love and positivity. These people literally saved my life....and this is the start.
They had no idea what this would turn into. Just yesterday they announced that Amazon will be doing a two-year animated series of Critical Role! It just keeps going!
A message for my future self: After 7 years im still enjoying this amazing group of people who one day decided to bring one of my most fondest dreams to life. Long live Pen & Paper games. All of them. Im sure it's the ultimate friendship and kindness generator .
I find it so grounding after hearing Matt talk on between the sheets about his mind spinning a mile a minute, and how his mouth can't keep up, that's exactly what you see here with moments of incoherence. This was such an exciting and innovative idea at the time he couldn't control himself. I'm so glad it worked out for (almost) everyone at the table.
Watching this video and going though the comments feels a lot like going though a photo album of a very fond and chaotic family and getting to know/remembering moments that quite literally changed history for a lot of people just by reading the references. I just want to contribute by saying I got here 3 days before the premier of the animated series and I still can't fully believe this is how it all started. Thank you for everything.
If they knew what they had begun that day… Cheers to the cast of Critical Role! You have helped, entertained, brought to tears and most importantly created the room for a fantastic community… Even thou corona is doing its thing right now… keep going, if you had not agreed that day, a lot of people would have never known d&d even existed… I read a lot of comments of how you have made it really far… those ones are 2-3 years old now. People will keep visiting this… as the first building block of your dedication then, now and hopefully far ahead… “Can we have themes again?” Oh Ashley…
Karragh No they changed last minute after saving the leader of Emon. They were about to be introduced to the city as its heroes and were asked for a name to be introduced by. Percy refused to go by the Shits after that.
I LOVE this show, at first i was skeptical because i haven't played D&D in 20 years and i know it's changed ALOT since then. But all of you are so amazing with your abilities to make the audience FEEL the story unfold it's captivating really. MAJOR props to Matt for being the most epic Dungeon Master I've ever witnessed. I can't wait for the information and back stories to be put up!
and a THIRD season of legend of vox machina got greenlit along with the start of an animated adaptation of mighty nein to boot; well deserved, and it's wonderful to see their joy from day 1 of their game is being paid forward to the rest of the world as well today :)
