What’s hilarious is that this couple minutes of audio sounds EXACTLY like they do even currently on critical role. It shows why they became so popular with this - such a genuine energy, not faked.
D&D is addicting for most people on their first session, now i can't even imagine how much of a ride it must be when your first DM ever is Matt Mercer ..... superjealous ':D
Now I get why Matt made Liam a fatetouched character. He is responsible for CR's existence, not only for the first game but also reaching out to players later and asking to do it again. Man, I wish they recorded the whole first game!
Sarah Best Do you have links to that? I really want to see for myself, in like a "when I read it, I'll be satisfied" way, not a " I don't believe you" way
I was like semi-interested in DnD when I realized one of my friends was also semi-interested and I was like "let's see if we can get the others in on it", so we scheduled a day and then someone couldn't make it, but we played a one-shot anyway, which we didn't even finish, and we haven't been able to find a day when everyone is free yet so we haven't played again. That was like six weeks ago and I'm still buzzed.
Same XD. I was playing with 3 of my friends & my boyfriend (My DM is the one who got me in, is a great friend). Who have all been playing for 2 years as of now & three of them have been DMs. Our DM, this was her first time being one. Our game has been going on for a year. It's been a crazy fantastical year XD.
My very first dnd ‘session’ was a school lunchtime almost 40 years ago. In that first time we met and killed a bugbear. I still remember it today, and bugbears still have a fond place in my heart.
It is WILD to hear how excited Sam was about the first session and how impressed he was with Matt's DMing. Sam is always fucking around and trolling during the stream (not that we don't love that), so its cool to know that it's coming from a place of genuine admiration of Matt and the rest of the cast.
I feel so privileged to hear this incredibly humbling gem, a sample of THEIR FIRST EVER SESSION TOGETHER!!!!! amazing. LOL!! my fave part of the whole thing was Sam anxiously whimpering out the words "ALL OF MY SKILLS ARE SINGING!!!!" and sounding completely useless xD
You know, I have to say that its weird to me to hear Sam Reigel be so energetic about this. Not that he's not into the game, but he seems that actually be nerding out about it. Just never an impression that I got from him during the show.
people like this are the reason I prefer playing DnD over actually trying to meet new people. The type that are just stupid and Im not sure if they realize that they dont really amount to anything in this world. loke, he is on a few more of these comments, and I dont wanna give him the attention, but shit, it got from annoying to just really fucking sad really quick. the dudes more pathetic than anything else. and anything he says is irrelevant to people that can talk with words other than the typical teenage effort of string profanities together just to sound edgy.
Yeah, I've heard of the Dragonborn Paladin he played, many times, and never heard anything about him dying. I think it was probably more the he created the Dragonborn Paladin for the one off, and when they decided it was going to be an ongoing campaign, he decided to make a more in depth character with a big backstory.
@@Logan_Baron I remember reading something about his dragonborn being a higher level and was there to safeguard the rest of the group a bit because he was the only one with previous tabletop RPG experience while none of the rest ever played. Although I do also know he missed a few sessions after that and before making Percy. So yeah, I don't think he died, and you're probably right he made it only for the one-shot.
@@Logan_Baron in Molly's postmortem Talks Machina Matt and Taliesin rememberer, that Matt had already killed his character. Maybe it was a one shot or something, but chances are, he was talking about this guy
Holy crap. It's easy to look at the concepts that go into the production of the show today and expect they figured out things like the character embodiment, ambient music, etc over the course of playing but to find out that Matt had it all on session _one_? Damn amazing. I'd _never_ thought to use movie (or other) music during P&P sessions when I played back in the day. Just...amazing.
people were getting annoyed with him metagaming and using his real life knowledge to give them an edge in-game. in the beholder fight early on in their campaign he was caught searching the books for beholder weaknesses, then, without rolling for his knowledge (as it was their first encounter with a beholder he wouldn't know its weaknesses) then got annoyed and was bossing the group around to basically destroy the beholder with its weaknesses, then he got the final hit with the beholder, it was getting re-animated and he shouted at the group not to do anything and to shut up and let him do his thing. travis and marisha got incredibly annoyed and even laura said something like "why are you being such a dick?" and his response was something like "i got the final hit i killed the beholder" not caring that his group helped him. then, he quickly packed away, and was getting annoyed at everyone signing off. other instances where scalan was doing something he hated he used silence spells against him, making scalan's character quiet (before he used the spell scalan asked him if he was on their side, he didnt like this so he silenced scalan) also, he spent about half an hour shopping for himself and not letting the others do their thing, dragging out the game to do his little shopping spree, everyone was getting annoyed and sitting there, so matt decided to punish him for being a dick. there were many instances where he metagamed and was generally a dick to the group. alot of people came to his defense, and yes for the majority he was a good player, but there were times when he made it a one man show. based off his facebook and twitter, the group aren't friends with him as they aren't on his friends list and following him on twitter. as matt killed of his dragonborn character, and the group not caring, clearly theres no chance hes coming back.
Yeah, it isn't easy as DM sometimes, but when all the cards fall together and you get 'that silence' as they wait with baited breath to hear the result of some game changing event, it makes it all worthwhile. I know I'm not the best, but I think my group enjoys it anyways. :)
I know there was a really bad situation between Orion and the rest of the CR cast when he left, but holy moly, I didn't realize just how much I'd missed hearing his voice as Tiberius until listening to that clip just now.
When they talk about how the already-formed group met Percy by finding him in a prison, even though Taliesin was playing with them from the beginning, that's because he decided he wanted a new character when they decided to make playing D&D a recurring thing.
And we're so close to a new campaign, I'm so excited. Also, they said that they were going to revisit doing it in 5 years, which, considering the starting date of the new campaign, is actually almost spot on to when they played their first game.
High Adventure! When they were talking about doing it another 30+ years, I thought for a moment about that. I'm guessing there will be much more frequent short rests. Maybe a cantrip form of levitation, just to take the weight off those aching joints a bit. Nah, but they were having a great time!
Currently listening to this, stressfully taking notes because I will introduce D&D to 3 friends this summer and I want them to love it ! (Also I'm a total noob, I've been DMing for like four sessions and my players pretty much gave up on D&D T-T)
Awesome. Every time you hear this you get to listen in to people finding there love for d&d it's still super fresh. I'm rewatching 1st season for the 3rd time and watching 3rd season as it's released.
I played pen and paper Adventure league and after one session I was hooked. I am now determined to find a group even though nerves always kept me at bay
They did. But they from what i remember, Matt said they switched to D&D 5th for the simpler combat rules for the sake of being on air, so the show could flow better/faster.
Samuel Khasin I believe they either started in DnD 4e before PF or Matt used 4e when he created Exandria because PF doesn't have Dragonborn or Goliath player races (at least last time I checked the SRD).
amiraultk It's easy to find unofficial, widely accepted extra rules for Pathfinder (or any d20 system). I personally ran a PF campaign a couple years ago with a Dragonborn Player Character. And honestly, even if you don't find an adaptation, if you have enough DM experience in a particular system, it's not hard to pull adaptations off yourself. Use the guidelines in the books, compare it to other adaptations (like other fanmade races in this case), and soon enough you'll be homebrewing whatever you want. The hardest part, as with lots of crafts in life, is the beginning. After a certain point, it just flows. c:
From what I heard over the years and really old faqs he was an overleveled (comparatively) dragonborn paladin and basically there to ensure that none of the others died, Matt had asked him beforehand, because he knew Taliesin was experienced with all kind of tabletopgames. After that initial session he did not have time for a while and later on came back in as Percy.
