Join me and 3 of my DMs/friends as we discuss our general impressions on Tasha's Cauldron of Everything AND try to answer this pressing question: "Can I take the new Custom Lineage option during character creation and still qualify for a feat that has a racial pre-requisite?"

I personally really like race restricted feats it gives flair to different races. I feel it would only be a barrier if you didn't have the freedom to choose that particular race in your character creation process.

I absolutely agree. For example, Orcish Fury is one of those feats that just allow for some extra power, and Orcs have lived and evolved through hardship and suffering, fighting for their lives against the will of the world. That fighting spirit should be what allows you to partake of such a feat. If you’re a human but grew amongst half-orcs, then I believe you could be able to take the feat, for you grew and trained with those that unlocked that inner power. But if some Elf was just able to take Orcish Fury? Nearly slandering the namesake? I disagree with that. Perhaps instead of racial feats, they can be considered by trained feats in a way? If you were to be born an Elf, but see the savagery of natural Orcs and wish to work down that path, you can train with half orcs or so on and unlock your inner fury, and become able to take the Orcish Fury feat. But, a half orc having this fury naturally run through their blood would be able to take it regardless of their childhoods, even if growing amongst gnomes, all it would take would be the realization of their own boiling blood. It would allow for pretty neat character growth, as well as still give bonuses to the namesakes of the feats, being the races that which birthed the feats in the first place through the will of their ancestors. (Sorry for the long reply, just kinda typed away lol)

Catching up on these, now that I am caught up on Aneria. Regarding racial feats post-Tasha's, I consider all the racial feats to have the race in quotation marks, as a descriptor more (accurate as an elf, tough as a dwarf, armored as a dragon. resilient as a devil, etc) and they can be taken like any other feat. The half feats in Tasha's are why. Just as you could be fey or shadow touched, telekinetic or telepathic, you could have been exposed to a dragon's or devil's essence, admired an elf's accuracy and strove to emulate it, or a dwarf's durability, or a halfling's nimbleness, a human's versatility, etc. The only issue I have is having to scale the one Halfling one, if you are not a small creature.

@@DnDDeepDive Yeah, I don't disagree at all. In fact, I also think that was the point. However, as much as this has been talked about and the fact that Crawford and the rest of Wizards is not answering... that makes me think they've been given a gag order on anything involving questions about dnd races. Seems like a can of worms they don't want to open. That's a little bit of a bummer though as there are a lot of us out here confused and wondering about how to make a ruling on this at our tables.

Or choose CL and Flavor as Human. I was upset because my VHuman Fighter was level 6 when CL came out. So reroll for Darkvision because DM won't retcon? I think Wotc did the races a disservice with CL.

As far as racial feats with custom lineage, I personally would suggest allowing someone using custom lineage to qualify as up to 2 different races for the sake of feats. This enables you to really FEEL like a hybrid, like, say you're a half orc half elf gish, you take the elven accuracy and the orc feats bc that fits your character build mechanically and it really enables you to build these different half and half races and have them FEEL like that race. Say you have a half dragonborn half elf with dragon hide for ac and elven accuracy. You really will feel like a draconic elf. The feats need to stay race specific, just let custom lineage count as any 2 chosen races for the sake of feats on that character

So, approaching your questions about taking a feat that has a race prerequisite as a custom lineage character. As the DM, I would allow it, but I would say that you'd need to choose the race your lineage is most backed by. So if you want to be a custom lineage elf, then you can take elven accuracy but you can't take Dwarven Fortitude as well for example.

At our table our dm allows only to custom lineage (feats-wise) to maximum of 2. So most martials are picking half-orc, half-elf to have access to elven accuracy and orcish fury. For elves, the players have to choose if they want to be drow, high elf or wood elf.
@stormbreaker3027

I personally allow pcs to use this lineage as is, drop the feat an take 2 features from any race, or pick a feature an 3/4 skills.
@KatanaKamisama
@KatanaKamisama 3 года назад
Counter argument: Half-elf still has access to Elven Accuracy, so how much "Elf" blood do you need to qualify for Elven Accuracy. Half Elf also only gets some of the elf features, but they also get some Human features i.e. floating ability scores. If I was posed this question as a DM, I would say you can only pick a maximum of 2 races, and I would reserve the right to veto for thematic reasons. For instance, I would say NO to Half Orc, Half Elf. At least in an Aber-Toril setting.
@TheRobversion1

This is how our dm runs it too. Most martials though pick half-drow/high/wood elf, half-orc.

It seems that WOTC ended on the "nope, you're not actually an Elf" side of this. Enough so that official character builders like dndbeyond won't let you take feats like Elven Accuracy at all if you run custom lineage. I definitely get both sides, but Custom Lineage really starts to feel like an optimizers options only. Though, at my table being half-anything doesn't require the other half to be human... I guess I ignore that part of the racial description already.

I’m building a genie warlock for an upcoming campaign and stumbled upon a ruling issue that y’all might find interesting to discuss. The Summon Fey spell creates a 5 ft cube of magical darkness (when you choose the Tricksy mood). The question is: do you need Devil’s Sight (or similar) to see through this magical darkness or will simple darkvision suffice? The spell itself does not specify, but a sage advice compendium states magical darkness can be seen through with regular darkvision unless otherwise stated on the spell effect (as the Darkness spell states). How would y’all rule it? Love the content!

In our table, the DM rules custom lineage that you can pick feats from 2 races. Like for example you can be half-elf and half-orc. I think that's a fair way to rule this.

Certainly agree that it would be nice to hear some kind of ruling from Wizard's - but at my table, I'd rule that if you use Custom Lineage to make a "half-elf / half-orc" character - you can choose ONE set of racial feats - so either elven feats or orc feats, but not mix and match from both. While I hate being a wet blanket, I think that would be the most balanced approach - IMO.
@EdsonR13
@EdsonR13 2 года назад
RAW I think custom lineage doesnt let you take racial feats. At my table I would take it on a case by case basis, but honestly I dont see many situations where I would say no
@dafuzz2405
@dafuzz2405 3 года назад
Were this to come up at my table I’d probably do some home brew and make the feat unrelated to race. To make a ruling either way is incredibly sticky and given that customer lineage is meant to increase racial options it seems like the best way to encourage role playing and allow optimization is to remove the issue entirely

from what wizard's has been doing, could be wrong, they care about removing negative aspects from races. like they dont want any race to have negative stats or be automatically evil. think they still want races to be distinct when it comes to abilities and that custom lineage is intended to be like a bloodline. like the new ones in von richton's or like a sorcerer's. so you could pick youre like a quarter elf so like a half elf, you dont get everything but you get a little of elven heritage, at least enough for a feat.

I'd like all feats to become general, but the various racial traits to stay and get rid of custom lineage. (For a standard D&D setting, as it keeps the flavour) Nature: racial traits you are born with Nurture: ability assignment at start, feats and ASIs to let you create the individual you want. Just my 2p and how I'd like to see it go.
@johngallant1629
@johngallant1629 3 года назад
If you decide to be half of one race & half of another,you already gave up the specific racial benefits of both to get the feat,why wouldn’t you count as being both those races for the purpose of feats? Because if you can’t,I believe starting with a feat is way weaker than getting your racial bonuses & excess racial feats.

If you take custom lineage you are not any race. Therefore no elven accuracy. Like if someone does a custom lineage Kenku looking character cause they can't be bothered with only mimicry, fine then you also can't forge writing nor do mimicry when it helps. You want to be a dark elf without sunlight sensitivity? Ok, no magic or superior dark vision for you buddy. Custom lineage is Not overtly better than variant human. Depends on how much you value a feat and dark vision out of the gate.
