Okay, that IS a very good thing to do, especially for a weird, very original setting like Dark Sun, the whole group can roll their skills and put a picture together of what a creature is all about.

I once run a skin walker like creature in one of my tables. It was really neat, specially because most of the players never heard of a skin walkers before

I try to mimic the lore role in my games. Someone will be able to learn resistance/weakness, others will learn about what the creature typically wants, another about HP or damage dealt. It's not as smooth as 4e did, since i make it up on the fly, but it works.

One of the things I personally liked from 4e were the group skill checks. I have never played 4e but I have seen them used in live plays of D&D 4e. I have also seen group skill checks in Critical Role. They involve the whole party instead of just one character.

I basically treat some attempts like the group stealth roll rules in 5E. I always like to allow people to use a skill they are good at in a creative way to help out the group.
