Staring at a sign saying "Lonely Wizard needs friendly adventurers?" So that's what people did before craigs list. Wait, what if there was a Craigs list in in DnD!?
I was watching Rhett and Link and this was in the related videos. I've never played DnD, nor do I know much about it other than it's an epic tabletop role-playing game. For some reason I clicked on it. It is now 4:30 in the morning and I can't stop watching DnD videos.
Returning to this 14 years later, man it still holds up as good d&d improved comedy, really re-inspires one keep to playing! Also Chris Perkins is an absolute legend with massive cajones!
...like the Face, for example. Only eight orcs can melee a human at a time, but pixies have a Face of 0.5. That means that *sixteen* pixies can melee a human at the same time...with maybe a few more if they attack from above too. O_O But be as fearless as you want. Me? I've learned to approach any encounter with a healthy respect for possible dangers and nasty surprises...for example, Gnome Rogue/Wizards armed with short swords and Scrolls of Improved Invisibility. Ouch.
Try actually playing 3rd Edition. Heck, they've just rereleased AD&D/2nd Edition, so you might as well play that one too. Observe the distinct yet agreeable differences between 2nd Edition ("real" D&D, in the eyes of many) and the improvements which 3rd Edition introduced (ie. Bye bye, THAC0). Then observe how 4th Edition took *everything* that made 2nd and 3rd great and *completely* dropped it on its head. Do that and maybe you can finally understand 4th Edition's bad reputation.
Gnomes can be formidable too, especially if they have any wizards among them. Heck, I've seen a party of adventurers lose a Fighter and take serious injury from a mob of *pixies and brownies*. Apparently, pixies take some pretty nasty umbrage against people who respond to their their pranks by drawing a longbow and killing one of them. Like Master Yoda says, size matters not. Fear the wee folk. :-p
Me too. All of those super-weird magical halfblood races, weird classes and weird kits are crutches for lame gamers who can't figure out the nuances of both good builds and roleplay. The best players are the ones who take a vanilla race and a vanilla class and make them work, doubly so if the two aren't a perfect fit. So I don't fear the player with a Level 20 Half-Celestial Dragonborn Warforged pit fighter blah-blah-blah. But I DO fear the player with a Level 20 Gnome Monk.
so far it's incredibly cliched. 'We are ADVENTURERS! we risk our lives for money long after we have enough money to retire. We all met at an inn by the way.' and the other people in the world are described as a HALFLING and a DWARF. With no other descriptions of what they look like. They are generic cardboard cutouts. And the setting is a DWARVEN HOUSE. with again no description of why that makes it different from any other house.
if he had actually said that it would be excellent, but assuming that everyone knows what a DWARVEN HOUSE looks like is just poor gm-ing. in my games architecture changes depending on the region and i take great pains to describe the differences to avoid this kind of bullshit
I don't think I need Jesus Christ tampering with my Saving Throws. My Fortitude Save is awesome, my Reflex Save is awesome and my Will Save sucks so much that a legendary relic couldn't save it. Thank Pelor that I have a Decanter of Neverending Clarity Potion.... ;-p
I also heard that dwarves are given an ad on to their wisdom stats (+2) i believe? Which is kinda weird, but i would have liked them to have (at least) a +1 to strength -at the very least ...to make them kinda go toe to toe with Orc/Half Orc Fighter classes to make them even, because Orcs have the new dexterity thing which makes them way tougher. I think dwarves, halflings and elves should be evened out more with the rest of the newer races too ... give the halflings and elves even more Dex.
Yeah ...but still, you can play a DragonBorn. Which is a pretty awesome character to play. Maybe -too Awesome (powerful). It's almost like the regular races -dwarf, Elf, Halfling, gnomes and humans have become obsolete compared with the new player races... because the new races are just too powerful. And also they don’t blend in well in crowed areas..just imagine them wondering into a tavern (a Dragonborn or a Tiefling) remember what happened to Drizzt Do'Urden when he first encountered men?
I haven’t played D&D in almost 16 years ... I so want to get back into it. But! ... I hate how they did the Halflings in this new D&D ... they look like lil-crackheads. Give me the old "hobbit"-lookin ones from 2nd-E any day. Plus -the new player races are too powerful like "Minotaur" and giant-kin (Goliaths), as fuckin cool as i think making them characters is ... they should make special penalties for using those races ...like you CANT go anywhere near civilization -Even Waterdeep.
I have had a similair experience. I was a half-elf ranger with my friends being a dragonborn fighter and a human wizard. So the room was collapsing and my dragonborn friends rolled to lift up our wounded human but failed and ran away. I then rolled a d20 so I lifted up this biggere than me human and then ran FASTER than the dragonborn out of the cave. That caused us to fall to the ground in laughter!
Ive played once which I found really fun. I have a girlfriend. I have a job. I have gotten laid. You obviously play games, which means you sit on your ass and do the same thing. At least Im with people not some piece of shit sitting on my couch playing xbox wasting my day away playing call of duty or watching youtube most of the day 'trying' to troll people. And I have once chance and in life and Ill gladly spend it with my friends playing a game I find fun.
@steeroy I just looked at my comments on that video, and I dont see anything about that on there. I do see me agreeing that CP is a decent DM for they are trying to do, which is just demo 1 shots. If I was wizards of the coast though, I would pick a better DM to show off the game. I guess a lot of this may come down to me feeling that D&D should be a role playing game, and not an MMO board game.
@TwilightDuality Yeah, I didn't mean to say that there should be no joking. Our group has a lot of fun joking about things in the game, but there is a difference between goofing around just to be funny, and having some light moments laughing about things in the game. Goofing around is usually a sign of boredom on a players part. They often want to be involved more, but have nothing but jokes to entertain themselves with.
@murphysborounderdark Chris might not be the best or most imaginative DM, but he keeps his players entertained, and he keeps himself entertained. I could happily say I would rather be a Player in his Campaign than the DM I currently have. Who Improv's everything out of his arse and tends to be repetitive. (I.E If someone offers you a quest 9/10 times you can kill him and find out he's the bad guy anyway)
I cant decide 1 of these D&D ideas. Please help. 1) In a battle with a powerful wizard exeprimenting on time travel the party and wizard are accidentally teleported to the early cretatious period and and have to fight each other and dinosaurs 2) The party stumbles upon a lost valley where since the dinosaur times magic has prevented extinction. Super intellagent raptor hominiods have colinized the land riding and hunting dinosaurs. Players must help/hurt the different rapor clans.
The penalties are up to the DM, and it depends highly on the setting. RP penalties - DM. There are no specific penalties, because if they were, what do I consider as civilization? The question might be too opened. So, it is not constricting. It is up to the DM. And in terms of how your char looks? That's up to you and your DM. Don't constrict that to the art that was made.
God I wish I knew how to get into writing for TV. Simpsons, Family Guy, Robot Chicken... Anyone got any tips to get into the business without directly contacting production companies or writers themselves ('cause that... as I've found out... is not how you do it). In the half spoken words of John Travolta "I'm DIEIN' ova heah'r"
Well watching it is pretty dull. But you can learn from it. As for playing, depending on who you play with is a big factor. You can a nice dungeon master or a bad one (killing you off anytime). And also your team mates. I had a blast with my friends. Like being in a story book that's created going on. Or if you're being sarcastic, your loss.
@TwilightDuality You're right - good DMs dont get mad when players goof off, they don't have to because they inspire the group to really get into the game. If the players are fooling around, the DM isn't doing his/her job engaging the players. That alone doesn't make a good DM though. That just means you aren't screwing the game up for everyone else.
@scallvot Yes, that does sound like a bad DM. Perhaps you should get behind the screen for a few sessions and bring some new ideas to the table. Im sure your DM would find it nice to play for a change, and you might even inspire him to put more into his games. I know when I play with new DMs I get a lot of ideas.
what is the bored that is around the DM is it a premade thing for DMs with basics and so on and so forth or is it something he made someone leave me a message plz and let me know i know ones ive used like that before were made of cardboard ive made and had basics of my quest and maps glues to it
Neither of those things are absolute requirements of the game. You can pretend your imaginary half-lings look however you want them to and you can say that minotaurs/giant-kin are not allowed into Waterdeep. Following every single rule in the books breaks role playing.
I agree, just the sheer amount of source books and tons of information regarding alternative rules, classes, races, etc. makes 3rd edition such an interesting game. You can play for years and still barely scratch the surface of all the stuff published out there.
when i started playing, i was no more aqqauinted than i kid who says "whats a mario" but after i played, i was hooked, and that was at my school photo day, whe i overheard the words "dungeons.dragons.and we need more players" and also, what handbook is drow in? 3
@jcjl2020 If you've no luck there, stop by your local gaming stores and ask around, or even look for groups at colleges. D&D is lots of fun, so the searches are worth it! You meet all kinds of new, fun people, and your mind gets a big break from the stress of daily life! Good luck, and happy hunting!
They do. LA, or Level Adjustment, and racial classes. Essentially you become a level one at level thirteen when playing a Minotaur. Seriously, it is SO disadvantageous to play something like a giant monstrous creature that I'd say it's never worth it.
Very true. Now that I have seen more of Chris Perkins's work, I agree, he is a rather poor DM. It seems like he takes two random words and puts them together and ta-da! an interesting location! For example Slaughterfast and Thunderspire.
True, i'm also looking forward to DnD next. Play-tested it once and it was really fun. They seem to have reduced the power of spellcasters, and boosted that of fighters, which is a really good thing in my opinion. Hope they won't mess it up.
DnD Next looks promising, been play-testing it. I started with 2nd Edition and the old Rules Cyclopedia, wasn't a big fan of 3 and 3.5 because it just complicated what should be simple and 4th ed went even further with complication.
@Nakedspaceman1 Again, being comfortable, and level are things a good DM should do, but not screwing something up doesn't make you good. I can tell the guy is trying. I just thought it was his first time running a game when I saw this.
@darknightmare909 I went over and watched it. I stand by what I said, and there is a convo going on about this on the UK adventure part 6 video if you want to join in. Myself and others are wondering why people would accept this as good DMing?
I think people who write witty dialogue for a living should play a less hack & slash RPG than D&D. D&D is a total waste of the their role-playing potential. I'd love to watch a video of these guys playing Paranoia.
This sucks, I thought it was going to be animated with toys. This is kinda boring, after PAX I guess it is popular to show 'celebrities' playing D&D. Newsflash it is about the same as watching anyone else play D&D.
@SBaby I played 2nd, 3rd, 3.5 and 4th. 4th is probably my favourite. It just makes all the characters feel stronger. Fighters aren't just "go there, basic attack, check what your feats do" they have real options and abilities
This is a cool concept and I'm going to watch every ep and enjoy it...but I'm disappointed that they're playing 4th edition. Pathfinder is the true inheritor of the D&D legacy, not the soulless 4th edition.
It depends mostly on the edition of D&D. In 4th you can't really play such things. My personal favorite is 3.5 because name you can be it though there are penalties for playing with advanced races.
Drow is in the monster manual, at least in 3.5 which also has rules for making a drow PC. In 4e, just google search,as I'm not all that familiar with 4e. My friends and I usually play 3.5 and Pathfinder.
How is that a sign of being under 18? it's simply an emoticon used to express, oh I don't know, an emotion? It's better than having a drab and melancholy sentence without any indications to expression.
@NightHunterClaws How is that necessarily unfortunate? I'd say it works fine. I don't know how you mistake it, though, since he takes about 20 some-odd damage and survives it in the 9th(?) segment or so.
DWARVES FTW dwarf clerics for life im lvl four started playing 6 months ago i have a war hammer,a thundering war hammer, 5 throwing hammers a crossbow and 100 bolts im basically a mobile barracks
It all depends on the variables of an encounter plus the game your playing. Respect and Fear aren't the same thing. I know if a creature is powerful that doesn't mean I have to fear it.
I don't think so for one I chose the race for a character as both a mechanic for role-playing and for what ever class I feel like playing. Not sure because I've never played 4th edition.
Oh thats not a troll. He's being serious. I can tell a troll from far. And he's got nothing on me just trying to 'beat' someone saying a game is lame. Dont knock it till you try it.
Tried 4th for a while but did not like it, so i got stuck with 3.5. Its a pretty broken edition but with a few tweaks here and there it can became playable and very enjoyable
im looking to join an online game, got vent, skype, maptools, klooge and openrpg. open to playing any medieval fantasy setting or modern era d20 zombie themed games,
Yeah... but if you are going to watch someone play D&D they may as well be celebrities. You'll get better production values anyway, not to mention Chris Perkins as DM.
@chaosnewterer lol oh wow, are you serious? I'm about to call you out for being a troll, in fact, i think i'll just do that, since it's pretty obvious your trolling.
It sux where I live in NEPA, man. I have all the D&D stuff I need but the only person I played with passed away :( Can't find a decent place to find anyone to play with.
How about using some that doesn't make you look like a angsty teenager on the internet? Some of the classic ones. I hope I don't have to write them for you.
I would fucking love to do this with chris as DM, never played before lol as i cant find a group to play in my town lol, but yeah, would fucking love to do this XD
guys , if anyone knows other videos of people playing D&D like this send me lol BTW , what do u call a D&D match or whatever ? session or something like that ?
At college I thought that DnD was a girl thing, because the only people I know playing at this were womens. Here's another proof that I was terribly wrong.
