Three levels of warlock for the book of shadows would pair nicely with this class. You can be dropped naked on an island and within a short rest replace your quill, book, spells and your manifested spirit. Or a single level dip with the new 2024 Warlock class.

I am excited for the the new “edition” but I am trying to stay away from all the videos explaining what’s changed cus I don’t wanna have their influence in my head the first time I read it. I do respect there opinions and actually watch them pretty often, I just wanna see it clear with my own mindset. Unfortunately I am just not big enough to get an early copy

This is a fun subclass. We have a half elf order of scribes wizard in our Saturday game. They have a book that gets new spells by eating them. Their manifest mind is a whirlwind of pages that come out of the book.

The interesting things that could pop up with that, like the possibility of the personality of the speaking tomb. Could they be mischievous? Or have there own machinations going on. Maybe a there own purposes pushing the character to finish then to finalize there unfinished works. The idea though can grow really well through out a story.

Note that the level 10 spell that allows you to describe one scroll for free a day doesn't require costly Spell components. Unfortunately there's not many spells of level one and two with Spell components. Arcane lock (gold dust worth at least 25 gp, which the spell consumes) Continual Flame(ruby dust worth 50 gp, which the spell consumes) Note this spell is permanent and might be able to be sold for-profit. A spell from wildemount subclasses which can be given out with DM's approval to be added to the wizard spell list: Immovable Object(gold dust worth at least 25 gp, which the spell consumes) Unfortunately the other costly components are Level 1 and 2 have a cast of time of 1 minute or 10 minutes for find familiar.

@TheSinisterheroes

It really lends itself to being versatile, on short notice. Wizards can normally be like Batman, if you have prep time you can beat anything. Though without prep time your on your heels. This subclass I think minimizes that, by allowing you to compensate on the fly. Now you won’t need X amount of damage spells, you can snag 2. 1 for aoe , 1 for single target. Then focus the wrest of your prepared spells on utility.
@Baes_Theorem

I've been playing a Scribes wizard for almost a year now in a weekly Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign. I've discovered that 1.) the Manifest Mind is completely overpowered. 2.) The damage swapping is basically a red-herring. Wizards shouldn't be doing much damage in the first place. that's what your minions-- I mean, party-- is for.
@TheSinisterheroes
@TheSinisterheroes 23 дня назад
I am enjoying rime of the frost maiden, I hope you are as well. That’s so cool to read, it’s not an easy ability to use well. To read that it’s completely over powered must mean you have mastered it and use it very creatively. Why don’t you think wizards should be doing much damage? Its odd to me because of there spells give them more than enough options to be a gold standard of damage.
@michaelmuirhead910
@michaelmuirhead910 11 месяцев назад
Hey Danny. I ended up having to “retire” my necromancer. It made me sad, but it wasn’t right for my table. It was going to cause more problems than solutions. So I had to look elsewhere, and really fell for the flavor of this subclass. I added one level of Knowledge Cleric to double down on the brainiac theme of a wizard obsessed with acquiring knowledge. A deep gnome that uses a sentient gem as his spellbook. The MM feature manifests as a glowing crystal that pulses and shows sigils when it converses with me, or when I cast spells through it. I’m really enjoying this class. It’s not OP, but has lots of power, and some cool role play. Really hope your channel grows and you get to 2k soon!
@TheSinisterheroes
@TheSinisterheroes 11 месяцев назад
I am so sorry to hear that you had to retire your necromancer. What was the issue if you don’t mind me asking? For the record from what you said it seems to me you made the right choice to not cause turmoil and do the right thing for your table, respect! I really like this subclass, it gives you so much to work with and it really feels really unique. I hope you enjoy it!

It was making npc’s react poorly to the party, and I did not want that to be a reason that everyone else didn’t have good social/RP. As it happens, since I have to play remotely, last session one player screwed me over big time, and none of the others or the dm said anything. So I decided to not continue in that game at all. No Dnd is better than bad DnD, but it really sucks.@@TheSinisterheroes

I’ve rarely ever played in a group that only had “party” treasure and funds. I get having a party fund, but not splitting any of it just seemed odd to me. I went with it, the group has mostly new players, so optimal team play just isn’t a thing for them. So, long story short, a lot of selfish play in that group. When I asked to copy a spell from another player’s book (go figure, I had a scribes wizard) I was basically told to go F myself. A spell bought with party treasure…when the table laughter died down, I was just ignored. No one said anything about it. So I logged off and left. This wasn’t a group of friends that I grew up with, but a group I joined in a previous campaign. I had a feeling it was moving this way, so I wasn’t shocked that it happened pretty much how I thought it would. Not everyone becomes a good friend, but I would never treat another player like that. It is what it is.

Order of the scribes damage type replacement is way trickier. If you can upcast a spell for instance, let's say Fireball at level 9, then the only damage you can swap it for is a level 9 spell you have. So sometimes upcasting screws you over for that ability.
@TheSinisterheroes
@TheSinisterheroes 11 месяцев назад
I guess you just play with it a little, but an acid fireball sounds fun to me lol.
@jacklogansmith7646

Damage replacement on an upcast spell is based on the upcast level? I thought it was based on the original level.
@Supremax67
@Supremax67 10 месяцев назад
@@jacklogansmith7646 -- Based on the upcast level... "When you cast a wizard spell with a spell slot, you can temporarily replace its damage type with a type that appears in another spell in your spellbook, which magically alters the spell's formula for this casting only. The latter spell must be of the same level as the spell slot you expend." And thus, if you upcast, you expended a higher level spell slot; if your fireball is level 8, then find in your book a level 8 spell that offers a different damage you can use instead. This also means that damage switch doesn't work on cantrips as they don't expend spell slots.
@TheSinisterheroes
@TheSinisterheroes 10 месяцев назад
I always gone with the original level of the spell. Though it should be discussed with the dm the original intent I believe is the original level of the spell.
@kazenoyonia.6516
@kazenoyonia.6516 7 месяцев назад
The temporary damage replacement is based off of the expended spell slot. An upcast fireball to level 5 would need to be replaced by another level 5 spell, that is in your book, thats also level 5. Even though fireball is originally a level 3 you are not expending a level 3 slot. “The latter spell must be of the same level as the spell slot you expend.”

As I said in the war mage comment section this is my favorite wizard subclass and I love everything about it and the ability to tinker with already existing spells and homebrew spells made by DM or players alike so I really like the damage manipulation of the subclass and the fact that you can right down or copy 9th level spells into your spell book in a single day rather than taking almost a week to write down those 9th level spells is really cool in my opinion and the fact that you can simply magically transfer the spells that you have written down in your spellbook regardless if they are just spells that have been copied into the spellbook or prepared spells. It doesn't matter which is really handy and the fact that you can cast one ritual spell as a ritual without needing to spend the extra 10 minutes to ritual cast. It is also really nice. Everything else about third level is mostly kind of like a niche ribbon feature, but they are really good for flavor purposes and it's very thematic to the subclass 6th level is also really interesting and cool because you can create an intangible object that can look like a basically anything you want that cannot be removed by anything but a dispel magic spell and I suppose the DM could also allow counterspell to affect this ability Which a campaign that most likely has enemy spell casters can be a little scary, but luckily you can use it more than once. If you have provide the appropriate spell slots and the fact that you can cast through this manifest mind is really cool and at 10th level the ability to make one spell scroll at the cost of a bit of parchment paper which is not good cost much. Let's be honest and one spell slot now it. It does specifically specify that only you can use the spell that has been put on to the scroll in this way. So the whole get rich quick scheme that it's sinister said kind of falls flat like I don't think it will work. I am pretty sure that everyone, at least most people who are aware of wizards are also aware of order of scribes wizards and are aware that they can make things scrolls in this way that they are useless to anyone else, but the one who made it so any person with a brain cell that knows anything about magic would most likely no that the spell scroll that wizard in front of them is trying to sell is most likely use. Don't get me wrong is a funny idea and I will admit it is hilarious but I don't think the DM would allow that so you either have to be really good in deception checks or just come across someone who's just genuinely an idiot and knows nothing about magic. Other than that, this feature is okay. Is nice to have a spell prepared and placed in your back pocket if things go, you know South but for the most part I think this is a very niche feature with kind of limited use, especially since you can only use 1st or 2nd level spells granted they are upcast version of those 1st or 2nd level spells. They are still first or second level spells though. And a scroll of fireball is going to be more important or useful than a let's say a scroll of identify I guess but that's just an example. It would be nice if you could use third level spells since you are 10th level but it is what it is. I guess now for the 14th level feature is interesting. You can basically say no to damage if it's going to drop you to zero hit points which is nice. But you have to waste your manifest mind and lose spells which granted the manifest mind can be replaced and the spells do come back? And can you spells that you have copied but that is a lot of prep time and not alive DMs or party members ago. Sit down for 30 minutes of the campaign as your character is constantly writing down spells that they are definitely not going to use so this feature is a bit odd I'm about on the fence with this feature I'm not going to lie but overall the subclass is amazing, absolutely brilliant and the creativity of this subclass and the freedom that allows is why I love it so much. Granted it doesn't have the benefits of the warmage which allows you to free up a lot of spell options. You still have the same spill option problem that most subclasses of the wizard have which if this subclass did have a way of freeing up at least a little bit of spell options It wouldn't hurt but with the features that we have in this subclass it's unnecessary. So I am very much willing to let that drawback slide because your wizard you have so many spells and you can't fit all the spells you need in the preparation spells so it makes sense

Unfortunately, your video has incorrect information in it, nearly right off the bat. At around four minutes in, you state that the Wizardly Quill allows you to copy spells into your spell book for free, which is incorrect. The Quill only changes the time spent copying, not the cost. Any of the other subclasses that modify the time / cost specifically state what they change, and this one says nothing about the cost. It would be a rough argument to say that "since the Quill changes the time spent, but doesn't mention the cost, it's free!", when the Player's Handbook (pg. 114) say that " The cost represents material components you expend as you experiment with the spell to master it, as well as the fine inks you need to record it." The Unearthed Arcana version originally gave 1/2 time AND cost discount, but that is not the current version of the subclass. You'll want to fix that in your video, so other players won't get the wrong idea. Have fun, and happy rolls. :)
@TheSinisterheroes
@TheSinisterheroes 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for the catch. I’ll consider what changes need to be made. My reasoning for it is this. It dose state the quill dosent require ink. It is magical in nature so I would rule it as not requiring inks. Though it would come down to your specific DM. Just Incase you were curious to my reasoning.
@FlyXan
@FlyXan 11 месяцев назад
@@TheSinisterheroes The ink needed to write a spell into the spellbook is just part of the cost of learning a new wizard spell. While the PHB doesn't specify how to split the cost between the ink and the components consumed while experimenting with the new spell - thus leaving it for discussion with your DM - it does imply that the level*50 GP isn't just the ink itself.

We actually went with your ruling of no costs for inscribing spells. We talked about what was normally required to transcribe a spell and felt it fell into 2 categories. 1. The ink and that requirement disappeared with the quill. 2. Practicing. We felt that since the time per level was reduced by about 99%, this was basically the same as saying 'yeah you dun gotta practice bruv'... Hence the ruling and we haven't had any issues with it power or game wise...
