If you dont have the time to interview a D Day Veteran, dont start one. Let the man talk without time limits or the worry of a commercial break coming up. Me and my Son just happened to plan our trip to Normandy and we were at the British Memorial on October 26, 2021 when there was a ceremony to honor the British D Day Veterans. Harry was there. I got a lot of the ceremony on video and took a bunch of pics. After the ceremony, I heard Harry tell the story he started telling here. His mates name was Joe Needs. He told some reporters that were there covering the ceremony. I got in behind Harry and told my Son to take some pics. I'm so glad we were there. Just complete luck that we traveled from North Carolina at the time of this ceremony.
"Normandy veterans loved one another beyond the love of women" also got me. Profound words from a courageous man. Imagine being 18 and going through that, 😢
As a veteran of the afghan war hearing “ if you were in a hole with a man you got to know him” and veterans love each other beyond the love of a women” and I’m no hero I was lucky, all the hero’s are dead” pulled on the deepest parts of my heart. “Marvelous men”!! And I couldn’t agree more sir 🫡
He’s a true hero. He went to war at 18, a boy. When he tells his stories you can see the glint of his former youth. It’s a shame that time swallows us all to new and constant atrocities. One day I hope we achieve a level of existence that allows us to truly remember the heroes of old instead of creating situations, where they are needed.
Watching the D-Day 80th anniversary events today I couldn't help but think of Harry. It brought me here to remember him & his stories. If only he'd been able to see it himself today and be there. Thank you and your generation sir, the best of men - god bless you all
I got choked up with his words 😢. Such bravery and he is right we can't imagine the horrors they faced. Getting to know your fellow soldiers like family and watching them die before they have even lived their life. We will never forget what they did for us. RIP lovely man ❤. You will always be a hero in our eyes. ❤
Just been hearing that Harry passed away . The greatest generation indeed . Thank you for your service . Now go and enjoy with your mates at long last . Your service is done . ❤️
The fact that this man hit the beach at just 18 years young compare that to the 18 year old boy I was in 2008 I just can’t put into words what a brave young warrior
Quite a few years ago, I was talking with a great grandpa on Christmas eve and he opened about serving during WW2. He was part of the group that would come in afterwards and rebuild airstrips, he was one of the originals that made the Berlin airstrip out of rubble because the field became muddy and unsafe to use. I remember asking him what the Germans thought of it. He replied with "well, they certainly didn't make it easy." That's a conversation I'll never forget. RIP grandpa Jack.
@kritin there was a way he held himself and talked. He was both serious, but hilarious. Great GPA Jack was the kind of guy you could sit hours with talking about anything, and you'd never get bored. While he might not have admitted it, he was part of the generation that saved the world.
My god 93 years old and he has a memory like nothing I've ever seen before. "Legend" is throwing around so easily if you kick a ball now your a legend our right a few good song... this man is without doubt a legend as are his fellow comrades... massive respect.
All he did and he wouldn’t even use that word to describe himself, but people get such a big ego from 15 minutes of fame off a Tik Tok video. Incredible.
@@BigToeMuncher It's a product of life becoming easier. It's good that our society has progressed, but we should go back to valuing honor and respect the way we once did.
Some blokes down Romford legion go for a Sunday dinner each year on remembrance Day and last year was this blokes last one, they showed me a picture of him at that meal today. Amazing bloke.
There was a certain point where the emotions were too much for him to hold back and he just told it like it was. What a candid moment, you don't see things like this nowadays.
Your generation did save the world Harry, absolutely, you and all the brave courageous men that beat the enemy back from which they came, we owe all we have to Harry and all the men who fought, I am forever in your debt you great men xx
Many thanks for this clip. It seems the original by the BBC no longer exists on You Tube. I'm guessing they deleted it. Harry's story was deemed "un-news worthy" or some such. The deeds of this man and his comrades are not "inclusive/diverse" enough. In this country we celebrate "Pride" for 1 whole month. Harry and his mates get 1 whole day. Lest We Forget.
I'm here after watching the 80th anniversary, and was wondering about Harry. Sad that he's passed, but it was time for him to finally stand easy, his service done.
At 4.30 Harry mentions his dad who also was a soldier protecting the UK and us yes us it's people. That's Harry and his Dad who have seen service protecting our freedom and democracy. Thank you for all your sacrifice Harry and the millions like him who have fought for our freedom. Shame on anyone who wants to give it all away
All of the men who gave their lives so that we may live ours will always be remembered and honoured. The strength of one determines the strength of us all and the sacrifices that were made will never be forgotten
This gentleman and other people that fought in the both world wars saved the world and the world wouldn’t be like it is now if it wasn’t for the hero’s from the world wars and I’ve got so much respect for them, thank you so much for your service and R.I.P and some of the youth of today don’t understand that thousands of young men put their lives on the line and thousands Sadly lost their lives to give them the future they have got today
I went to an emergency call (as a member of the emergency services) in 2020 when the daughter of an old chap was worried for her father as she hadn’t heard fron him for a few days. Luckily he was absolutely fine, but it turned out he was a submariner during WW2. I sat with him for over an hour and he told me about his life during the war, the pranks they all played back in the day, and how they survived after being torpedoed. I could’ve stayed there and listened to his life story all day. Incredible.
Still as quick witted and sharp as he was the day he landed on the Normandy beachhead. Lest We Forget. Typical Infantryman...."I didn't eat Army rations, I got in with the crew down in the galley...." very smart enlisted soldier!
This man fought in a brutal war and watched his friends get killed constantly. Yet people nowadays are complaining about what genders they are and get offended so easily.
Rest In Peace Harry. You never let your brothers, your country, or the world down. The epitome of what a man is and should be. Thank you for what you meant to us all. A life of service finally complete. You can rest now, god speed sir.
Every now and then I’ll see a short video on Facebook or RU-vid. With some rubbish music over it, I’m sure everyone knows what I mean. I’m glad I found this original interview. We only have films to try and understand what happened in the World Wars. Some of them, have done a very good job. I think of 1917, Fury, and Saving Private Ryan to name a few. I think those films have encapsulated the fear, sadness and horror relatively well. We’ll never understand the experience however, unlike this Gentleman. You’re a hero Harry. You always will be. My Nan was too. I don’t often feel emotional watching something on here, but I’ve just had to wipe my face. R.I.P.
The ammount of respect i have for our country's soldiers is absolutely unbelievable and loving 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 ❤❤❤, if it wasnt for these soldiers and our allies we may have not even have been alive and our parents and grandparents may have not even been alive to this day if germany had won the war 😢.
