Veterans are heading to France to join commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
At 98, Ken Cooke is the last surviving member from York Normandy Veterans group.
He spoke to Sky's Tom Parmenter before making the trip and described feeling like "cannon fodder" on the beaches of Normandy.

Remarkable man. To have disembarked into hell. If there are such things as heroes, then he’s a hero. No matter how much he downplays it. That generation gave so much. It’s inestimable. A debt that can never be paid.

My great uncle Jim was a British tank commander during D Day. He was sitting on top of the lead tank with the top hatch open when a German anti aircraft gun, with its barrel lowered, sent a shell directly into the front of his vehicle. He was blown 30 foot in the air suffering extremely bad burns and landed in a ditch. His life was saved when a platoon of African / American soldiers found him later that day. He was so badly burnt and blackened from his injuries that the African American soldiers assumed he was one of their own and he later regained consciousness in an American field hospital! Amazingly he survived and subsequently lived well into his 80’s. Heroes

What is surprising is that facing such difficulties and risks the casualty percentages were so much lower than feared and expected. That takes nothing away from the courage of these lads but enabled more to carry the fight further into Europe and for the lucky to survive the war.

"The heros are still over there." That's pretty much exactly what every survivor of D-Day says. They have the humility that all of us would do well to learn. Our first-world problems are pretty small compared to what they went through and the sacrifices that too many of them made. Imagine the patriotism they must have felt to willingly give their lives so that we could have all the comforts of peaceful, modern, democratic societies. Thanks for your service!
