Although bus service in Detroit has improved tremendously in recent years, things have not always been rosy for D-DOT (the city of Detroit's transportation department). Over the years the city's transit system would encounter numerous obstacles and would struggle to maintain adequate service.
DDOT's first round of service problems escalated during the Winter of 1977-78, as problems compounded during a major snowstorm that dumped 19-inches of snow on the city in late January 1978. Although it would take DDOT months to recover, this would only be the beginning of the agency's problems that would continue well into the mid-1980s.
In this video clip from February, 1978, WJBK-TV2 Eyewitness News takes a look at some of the service issues facing bus riders in Detroit during that period.
This is the first in a series of upcoming videos from back in the day. Other videos will look at the continuing struggles the department faced and the attempts to overcome those issues.
