The Cockpit is finished!
************************
For the past 2 years during my spare time I have been contructing a small cockpit to fit in the corner of my room so that I can have an immersive exprience in the world of Elite Dangerous without speding my time in a different room from the rest of the family (bless my wife for allowing/supporting this!).
It has turned out pretty much exactly how I planned it on the first part of this 20 part journey back in April 2018, and although its not as flashy as some of the more professional looking ones, for a guy with little to no knowlendge in DIY or Electronics, I am quite proud of the result.
Thanks to everyone that watched this series, I had fun making it and now i'm having fun playing with it!

Beautiful. I do VR and have a cockpit with a rumble X-Rocker on pedestal, dual joysticks and Voice attack for the rest. I love this universe.

then you get a VR headset and realize that all you need is a comfy chair with Hotas or dual stick Mounted on the armrests. By the way if you haven't tried elite dangerous with a VR headset you are missing out on something truly Greate. it takes the immersion to the next level.

Haven't tried it yet but I would love to, I've have heard it works very well with ED, however I have built this is a way that I am still able to comunicate with my wife and child, which is why I didn't build a full enclosure or VR headset, also I built this fairly cheaply a lot less expensive than a VR headset. I'm not knocking it though, it does sound awesome.

@@Commander64 it's so different and amazing. the sheer scale of the cockpit is amazing. when you pop the headset on and you feel that you are in a Gigantic Spaceship. and not just your living room. Altho i can easily communicate with my family while i play because its easy to just take off. or if i feel lazy i can just activate the builtin cameras and see the real world through the cameras. but yeah if you have the means to get one or even a used one Go for it. i don't think you will regret it

I love the individual buttons for the controls. Playing on PS4 right now. Can't wait to get the funds to rebuild a gaming PC. Then I will have to try and build one myself.

LOVE IT! started following your build when i was starting out on my own, which has sadly been shelved currently due to moving into a smaller space and not hvaing much time to play atm, but super happy you've managed to finish your build!

Thanks for sticking with the channel for so long Alex, I appreciate it. There were times when I wondered if it would ever be finished. I think the recent lockdowns have helped in some way, had to keep busy somehow.

Thanks, it's has something inside called a Keyrah V2 which turns it into a USB keyboard so it's completely usable in ED (a made a video of that too),I also have a stock C64 in another room which may daughter loves playing games on.

hi, few questions, does elite understand that you have two different keyboards ? and how did you manage to have all the light working ? really nice build btw

As far as I know it does not treat them as seperate keyboards, as for the lights they are being powered by a USB plug, each button,switch,toggle has two wires one for the function and one for the light, I have two USB boards one with all the inputs connected which is connected via USB to the PC, the other board has all of the lights which connects via USB cable to a USB plug / socket. This means the lights are not drawing any power from my computer, I hope this answers your question.

Im interested in how you determined the height of the seat in terms of the pedals etc? any comment on that?

To my memory I measured it according to how i feel comfortable sitting, I don't like my knees to be higher than my hips when siiting.

First of all, congratulations, a great work, no doubt. I don't speak english and I'm trying to understand what you did here, and I'm watching all your videos about that, but I'd like to know if you can give me an answer.. How you fix or did the situation about the switch ON/OFF at game? I mean, If you press the switch ON position to unfold landing gear, when you press the OFF position of the switch, how you say to the game "pick up landing gear". I don't know if you understand what I wan't to say xD. Anyway, thank you and congratulations.

I'll try to answer as best as I can. On the control options some actions like Landing Gear have an option Toggle/Hold if you select Hold then you have to either keep the key pressed or if you have a ON OFF switch ON will be landing gear down and OFF will be landing gear up. I hope this answers your question .

I've done it in small increments over a couple of years so it's hard to say, but I did things as cheaply as I could. The Mdf for example would have cost £30 to £40.

umm i suppose it's in a folder somewhere, butI also keep a chart on the waal next to me. It's helpful becuase I'm using a commodore 64 keyboard on this set up which is missing things like F9 -F12 and with the cockpit buttons I can fill in those missing keys!

Oh yes I definitely do that, but its not easy to film it for the channel with the lights off.
