if you ever come across the sea to Ireland, sure it may be at the closing of your day! You can sit and watch the moon rise over Claddagh, and I will teach you the skills of hurling around Galway Bay. Please don't use the term hurley, Hurling please!
I think it's interesting how a contact sport uses defensive techniques designed to prevent injury to the defenseman. For instance when he talks about blocking the hurl. Block it in a way that prevents the hurl from hitting you in the face. You probably won't get the ball, but you block him and your face isn't smashed in. Win/Win. Now, throw a helmet on everyone. I'm going after the ball all the time now. Now it's a different game. That is, until I get hit in the head too many times.
Face guard is more to prevent the ball from hitting the face and the stick, but the guard can be forced back into the face by the stick,so protection is even more important
Getting hit in the facemask with a hurl still hurts your face, can also tweak your neck, and will make a loud pop in your helmet that could damage your hearing.
if you're in the US, go to the American Gaelic website, they sell a hurley, ball, and helmet all in one package. Being 6'1, you'd probably want the 36 or 37 inch hurley, but I'd still ask around and do research on it just to make sure. PM me if you have questions.
They have started using smaller hurleys over the last 10-20 years. Since there is more ball in hand and less ground hurling. Longer is better on the ground. I find it strange now tall lads using a hurley several inches shorter than what I had at 15 years old. Henry Shefflin used 37in
when you're rising the ball these days you'd want your catching hand where the tape is the get it faster and u won't get blocked down rising it up in the air
@@Liam-dn1yg depends on the surface and speed the ball is travelling , if the ball is in a hole the closer your non dominant hand is to the tape the better but if the ball is let's say coming at pace it wouldn't be necessary to have your hand as close to the tape
The game of hurling has became far more fast so when preforming the roll lift its better to take a few inches off the hurley so you can get it quicker into your hand the way hes playing is a very old way of hurling
