this is why i love korean movies and dramas. they really don't scare to expose their dark side. every country has its own problem. but most countries don't want or not allow to show their dark side especially when they know so many foreigners will watch that. I know that not every Korean content talks about its flaws. some Korean contents also dramatize their life. but the thing is people can say about dark side too or not. that means at least they admit the problem and have the will to move further. sadly, I know many countries don't want it.

As a Korean, to speak some words, you have to understand that drama like this can bring critical issues if it were shown on big Korean broadcasting like MBC; it corresponds with BBC in UK.) anyway, I can be sure that the drama like this showing tragic realities that most grown men in Korean might been through wouldn’t come out to the world if it were not for Netflix, which is global and promising platform that encourages a lot of innovational activities

It became possible just because the President Moon's government wants to make a perfect democracy, and it renders a country with the least censorship. If it was in a presidency of Myeongbak Lee or Geunhye Park (the two former Presidents of Korea), this kind of movie couldn't be brought to light, or just to scratch the surface. However sadly and stupidly, MZ generation of Korea who knows not much of dictatorship that their parents went through, they do not concern about politics and history so that they couldn't tell who's good or evil. Fascists grow in Korea society.

Not to call you out specifically, but I did want to talk about the sentiment in the comment though because that is one of the many core issues at the heart of the problem here. The belief that pressure forms strong men wrongly justifies the excessive hazing in our military, and this show/the comic it is based on tries to counter that very belief by telling the stories of deserters. Korean men always hear how the military turns you into an adult based on this notion that tough moments strengthen mentality; unfortunately, those tough moments also lead to deaths and ruined lives. I hope people watching this keep that in mind, and that the show is largely based on rok army in 2014; while much has changed since then due to two cases that caused national controversy, who's to say whether this has been completely eradicated.

That kind of bullying happens in Korean military. Since soldiers get too much stress and have no way to chill themselves down. Most of the Korean soldiers are not allow to leave the military camp even after the work, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Not even during the weekends. The only way getting out of there is getting discharge and taking a vacation. The total military conscription service period in South Korea is 21 months(recently it has been shortened to 18 months) and they have only 28 days of vacation. So except those 28 days, soldiers are literally confined in the military camp for 21 months, just like prisoners in prison.(They can rarely go out just for couple of hours at a time.) Recently ROKA(Republic of Korean Army) let their soldiers to use their smartphones in the military camp. But in the past it was forbidden. And most of the military camps do not have enough facilities and equipments(ex : computer, TV, game machine, etc...). So some mean soldiers do mean things to other soldiers because they were extremely stressed out. That's the reality of conscripted soldiers. And that's why those kinds of bullying problems are so serious in ROKA.

Just finished the whole series and the ending was very similar to two murder cases in Korean military that went news reported nationwide. a solider was beaten to death due to constant abusing and another soldier rain fired the bullies just like the one in the post credit scene. the director probably intended to remind us of the cases. Those two cases went viral so huge at the time that it sparked the light for the military to go through a historical change to eliminate all sorts of abuses and bullying. I cannot guarantee that they no longer exist but as a person who served in Korea just a few years ago, it was impossible to bully someone as even verbal abuse could get you in a serious consequence. There were regular visits from the HQ to monitor and receive anonymous reports and the reports held great power. I hope no one thinks that what's going on in the series is what's actually going on in Korean military at this time.

The hazing, bullying in military is not specific to Korea. It is prevalent in most military services. Ask Indian, Pakistani, Chinese, USA, and any other military. Now, the Korean drama can openly show such things tells me they have improved situation. Now, Korean soldiers can have cell phones, a fundamental shift. Conscripted military like Korea will definitely have much more issues than all voluntary services.

I am Korean and I served in the Korean Air Force. Please understand that this is a subtitled translation. Harassment in our South Korean military is ongoing. I don't think this drama is an exaggeration at all. Fortunately, I had a very comfortable military life in the Air Force without harsh treatment, but the reality is that even now, harsh practices are still taking place and victims are occurring. After the drama ended, the South Korean Ministry of National Defense announced that "the barracks environment has improved." However, a day after the announcement, a sailor on a destroyer in the South Korean Navy, unable to withstand the harsh treatment, took his own life. And it was discovered that two soldiers in the South Korean Air Force committed a harsh act of holding an electric drill to the anus of the other soldier. In addition In the South Korean Marine Corps, the fact that the new soldier's arm was subjected to a harsh act of firing the skin with a car cigar jack was additionally reported.
