D7200 vs D300 after 1 week of use

I've been using the D7200 for about a week. Here are my thoughts about it so far, with comparisons to my old D300.
The Nikon D300 was a pretty ground-breaking camera at the time it was released. But that was in 2007! Since then it has served me extremely well, and I will definitely continue to use it, but the D7200 offers a comparable camera with a few differences and a few advantages that might make it worth considering.

In 2023 I've been considering buying the Nikon d300 to restart myself and photography. Was a long time cannon shooter, and then a long time Fujifilm shooter, and times have gotten rough for me because of how I have been navigating life and I see that I can go back to My high school years and by the best cameras that were out then such as the Nikon D3 or the Nikon d300 or be amateur with the d7200 or d700.... And watching your review since I've never been in the Nikon world has been fresh to understand 16 years later what makes sense in the Nikon world. Thank you for sharing long ago and I'm letting you know that it had a long-term effect with me choosing to find the right time to throw money at a d300 and stop comparing myself to the multitude of things I have and still do... It's my struggle is all I'm saying... And you've helped. And it's saved me time. Appreciate you. Suddenly A guy in 2023.

D300 is still brilliant - and now with ai upscaling, who really needs more than the 12.3MP? The whole experience with the D300 feels just 'right'. I've had mine.. for 12 years. A lot of gear has come and gone in that time, I don't think I'll ever sell it.

I just bought a D200 for 80 euros in almost new condition. I couldn't help myself pulling the trigger at that price. The other reason was that the D200 has a CCD sensor and I wanted to compare the quality with the venerable and now famous Pentax K10D (also a CCD) which I have. The K10s is well known for having incredible colours and has a bit of a cult following and I can really confirm that. The D200 has amazing build quality and so great that everything is accessible from a button. For landscape the K10d still seems to be a tad better but oh my god..for portraits the D200 is absolutely amazing. The colour in normal mode is so natural and at low ISO hardly any noise. Ps on the D200 I just attached a 50mmm AI-S lens which I had lying around. When I use it I dont think I am using a 14 year old camera in the slightest..I mean sure older cameras dont have the dynamic range newer ones do but if you meter correctly then they are fine.

I bought a D300s & D7200. I ended up selling the D7200 & keeping the D300s. The build quality of the D7200 wasn't great & I didn't like the IQ as much as I liked the D300s. Yes the AF is slightly better in low light & you can shoot at ISO 3200-6400 if you really need. I think it's such a pity Nikon didn't put a D7000 sensor inside a D300s body & sold it as a D400.

After having bought and tried most of Nikon's consumer and "semi-pro" cameras, basically on a trial and error basis, I have personally found the Nikon D300 to be the best all round camera that Nikon have made - digital ones anyway.

Great video, had a D300 for many years now and like you I have got used to the buttons etc, after what seems like an age on watching RU-vid reviews of the D7200 I bought one and I must admit I'm thinking I made a mistake. It's taking me a long time to get used to it, it's made me realise how good the old D300 still is, I'm glad I didn't sell mine. I've had similar experiences with my D7200, moving up from the D200. I like the D7200 and its vastly improved image quality, but my old D200 is definitely a better built camera, and still does a great job at lower ISOs and resolutions.

Thanks for this. I have a D300S and have always been happy with it. Your insights are appreciated. At my age (74) changing the locations of buttons and functions can really be a pain so I tend to stay with what I have. The lower noise is nice, but I do not shoot much night photography and if I do, I suppress noise in post. Only complaint I have with the D300S is when I shoot HDR, it forces me to take 5 images to get my desired 3 images with a two stop delta thus forcing me to eliminate the two extra images...a major pain. Nikon, please send out a software update (yeah, right). Think I will hold onto my D300 workhorse. Thanks, Bob I also have a Panasonic mirrorless for travel and the menu's within menu's is a pain. Not easy to make menu changes on a bright day in direct sunlight not to mention remembering the Function buttons you assigned after not using it for 6 weeks. Yikes, it can get confusing. I like big buttons that are easy to see and change and the D300 does just that.

Controls is always the menu to switch controls like reversing wheels, review magnification, flipping the meter, custom controls. Coming from a D300/D3s to a Df, I have even less custom controls than those cameras. I'm pretty sure pixel level is when you set the ok button or center button to medium magnification.

ISO performance is better in "newer" cameras than in 10-15 year old models, but that may well be more of a marketing ploy than some practical improvement. In my opinion, about 10 years ago the photography sensor technology reached its peak, and nothing "better" can be invented. Why do you need super-high ISO anyway? If you do, there is probably not enough available light, and if that's really the case, it means your lighting is unsatisfactory, therefore, the pictures are not going to be extraordinary, so what's the point in taking them? Yes, with the ISO cranked up you will get an image of your subject but it will be a dull-ish looking picture with rather washed-out colors. What's the point in taking any a priori "substandard" pics? I remember the film era when you actually would plan meticulously for each shot, and as a result there were more keepers than in digial era. And if you really need to take a "utilitarian" picture of, say, some announcement or a shopping-list or something like that your you can always use your cellphone camera. Just my 2 cents:) Happy shooting!

The wide angle resolution problem at wide angle is because the focus module has a bigger subject to focus on and will just set the focus distance to what the algorithm detects as in focus. Not a new problem as I dealt with it in the old manual focus days(yes I am an old geezer) There are 2 ways to deal with this. 1) set the exact focus distance if known. and 2) zoom the lens out to it's max focal length, set focus and zoom out to the length you want to shoot at. Also, photographers thing they can get to use a longer shutter speed at a wider focal length but not really. Motion blur will show up at wide focal lengths. In the old days of manual focus only, lenses had a wider focus ring arch, so you could fine tune focus.

Great Video! I also prefer using the good old Nikon D300 over my D7100 - there is no need of more pixels for me if the camera does not focus that good as the old D300 does. The D300 AF is allways totally right in focus and sharp. The D7100 was ~ every 3rd shot out of focus - even with the manual AF Lens correction. So i sold it... I have had a lot of different cameras over the Years and I never found another camera to replace the great D300. Regards

I've got to say that I personally haven't noticed focusing issues with my D7200, but the majority of what I shoot these days is landscapes, so I've usually got a pretty deep DoF to work with. I'll have to check when I do some more portraiture or wildlife! Thanks for watching!

When using auto iso. Typically on any Nikon you set your main iso then it won't go beyond that primary iso, on the D300 you had to set this in the auto iso menu. It uses that as a hard stop. Also b/c it didn't give me custom menu control on a button I set the my menu to auto iso on/off to Fn. With the D300 and other Nikon bodies at 3200 iso and beyond it will use Low Iso NR even on raw files which on a D300 is not the best because Nikon cheated on NR by smearing. My suggestion would be to trade up to a D300 S where it has much better iso performance and NR and you wouldn't lose money. Now regarding focus. You need to calibrate your lens in camera. Here's a quick tip on focus. Manually focus till you get the little range finder dot. Now turn on LV and zoom in fully. Readjust focus and remember what direction you're turning your lens. Now without readjusting focus after you have it nailed, look in the viewfinder and see what arrow is now active when you half press the shutter or the directional pad to turn on metering. I typically have to have the left arrow on with my manual focus lenses and old lenses to nail focus. I basically focus to the dot where even with my great eye sight, the image looks in focus, give a slight turn left no more than 1mm turn and it looks slightly out of focus through the viewfinder, hits everytime even at F2. I can manually focus faster than autofocus except for that 50mm 1.8D that lens very fast.

The control layout is the reason I never upgraded to the other DX cameras after the D300 came out. That layout started with the D200 and I feel Nikon got it right with that layout. I didn't upgrade my D300 until years later when the D800 came out with the same layout. I was disappointed that Nikon didn't come out with a pro DX camera and I gave up waiting so I threw in the towel when the D800 came out and went to FX. I got a D500 with the same layout about a year ago but that is YEARS since the D300 came out. The D500 is the way to go if you want an upgrade to the D300 and want to stay in the DX format. There is something to be said for both DX and FX.

About the focus issue - at 16:39 - I guess you have to fine tune the AF to the lens. You can do that on the D300, so it would be very strange if they've removed this function on the D7200. About the turning direction of the weels - at 6:17 - I guess you can change it, just as you can on the D300. On the D300 you can allso change the indicator to show + and - to the left or to the right, and that probably goes for the D7200 as well.

@@andreik3096 That's fair. I didn't realize the D810 had dropped in price so much. Time flies. In the past, when I shot more wildlife, I would have said that the DX sensor of the D500 or D7200 would be preferable to the DX crop mode of the D810, but I rarely get to shoot wildlife these days, so indeed the D810 seems like a better choice. @raphaeltm_
@raphaeltm_ 5 лет назад
Hey John! Been here in Van for a few years now and loving it, but I wouldn't mind moving to some parts of Europe either! A couple things to unpack in your question... Re: the D7200 vs D300: I'd say it's a minor step up in image quality, a minor step down in build quality, and a significant step up in video quality (D300 has no video and D300s from what I understand has very rudimentary video) As far as the D7200 vs D750, what I've heard/read is that the big advantage of the D750 over the D7200 is just the FX sensor. FX sensors are larger, which means each pixel on the sensor can be larger, which means more light per pixel which translates to better low light performance. There are other pros and cons to the D750/D7200, where each camera has some wins/losses, but that's the key differentiator. I don't know how well versed you are in all of this, but just in case: one thing to look out for is if you've bought any "DX" lenses, they will not fill the frame on the D750, so you might need to replace them with non-DX equivalents. If you want to stick with DX cameras and want a step up, I would take a look at the D500, which is $300 more than the D750, and will suffer from the same low-light issues as any DX camera compared to an FX camera, but includes things like shooting up to 10FPS, ISO up to 51200 (though keep in mind quality will be questionable), 4k video, and faster autofocus. The D500 was really built to be the successor to the D300, whereas the D7200 was built with a more entry-level audience. So with the D500 you'll get the more "pro-feeling" body and button layout that you may have come to love (like I did) with the D300. That means no "auto" or scene modes, or any other such extras, which you'll find on both the D7200 and D750. If you're more of a landscape or portrait shooter, though, the D750 sounds like a camera worth checking out. In the end it's all down to what you want/need to shoot :-) Sorry for the essay! Hope it was helpful, though.

Trying to understand what camer to buy for cheap, d7000 start from 200€ used and d300s is really expensive, d7000 seems to be good with 1600 higher iso. Also it has more video capabilities. What about battery and photo quality compared to the old d300 which is still expensive :/ over 200€ For budget looking also for a d90 but price increasing day by day. I want a still camera to replace my bad eos 1100d, and in the future a better camera with lot of video functions like d5600. @raphaeltm_
@raphaeltm_ 6 лет назад
Hi Mike, It really depends what your needs are, but if you're on a small budget, and you also want to do video work, then it might be worth checking out some mirrorless cameras, like the ones mentioned here: www.dpreview.com/forums/post/57516512 In the end, the most important factor in making beautiful images/videos will often be your lenses, so if you can distribute your budget to get a nice lens with a decent camera, you'll likely be happier than if you try to get a nice camera with an okay lens. I still have a Panasonic GX-1, which is far from perfect, but it's a nice, cheap, small camera that shoots decent video and solid stills. It's not very good at high ISO, but here in Canada, you can buy a used one for $150, which is a pretty awesome price. I use these lenses with it: a.co/ad8Bj5R (Sigma 30mm 2.8) a.co/11Jxa2y (Lumix 14mm 2.5) If you really want to specifically switch over to Nikon, I would say look around a bit more for the best prices... as far as I can tell searching through Canadian and American sites, the D300S and the D7000 sell for almost the same price ~$600. As you can tell from the video and the comments below, I think the body of the D300 line is better than the D7000 line, but I think image quality and a couple extra features have improved a bit over time. It's probably worth actually holding the cameras and seeing how important the build quality is for you. Video performance will almost *definitely* be better on newer models than on the D300S, though, if that's important to you.
@nerdMike

That would have been great if my budget permitted it at the time, but it did not. What I needed was video and a higher resolution within my budget. The D7200 fulfilled those needs and its sensor seems to perform slightly better. The video describes that and is supposed to be a resource for anyone else with similar constraints and requirements considering the move. I'm currently considering a used D810, but even used those stretch the budget if they're in good condition. Same with the D800 at the time I recorded the video.

I was saving for a D7200 or a D7500 but went to a store and I saw the D300 for 400 or 500. I'm not too sure, I got alittle excited. But I definitely have enough for that camera. I am just wondering if I should buy it or keep saving for a new D72 or D7500, Brand new. I'm a single mother or two children, I do not have much time to go out to take photos, but when I do go out, I want to make sure I have a good camera for nice pictures. Also, maybe to do photo shoots. Should I buy this camera or keep saving? I have a wedding to go to and they want me to take some pictures, ust wondering if the D300 would be good enoughf or a wedding as well. I really need help with this situation. Thanks.

Hey Julia. I think it will depend on your personal situation and how each camera feels to you. If you can take each camera out for a test run and see how they work for you, that's probably the best thing you can do. Re: the wedding, I think your biggest concern should be getting some good glass, if you don't have any yet. So maybe that means getting the D300 and investing the rest of your budget in a nice lens or two (if you can stretch the budget a bit). Of course, you'll need to figure out if that makes sense for your situation, but maybe this blog post can help: baileyelle.com/5-best-wedding-lenses-budget/ (I'm a fan of the 35mm 1.8 as a good budget lens: www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-35-1p8g-n15/4)

My 2 cents is that I don't like the d7500 at all. I personally think that the D7200 has better specs/features, and is proven. Keep in mind that a D300 with a vertical battery grip (filled with AA batteries) is a heavy rig. A D7200 with a grip and batteries is about half the weight. But I carried a Nikon F3hp Manual Focus Film camera with the MD4 motor drive and 8 AA batteries for 20 years. just the body, winder and batteries weigh 3.25 POUNDS! Add a Nice old school Nikkor lens and your looking at 5 pounds of the best film camera ever made. But I got so used to the alloy everything rig that I prefer a heavy setup. The D300 is not as heavy but still much heavier than it's lighter cousin the D7200. I have found mint condition D300 bodies with less that 50,000 Shutter Actuations for under $225.00 local. $300.00 with the MB-D10 Battery Grip... That was $2500.00 new. It is a no-brainer if you can live with only one card slot and the weight! The D300 is a bulletproof beast. A true Pro DX DSLR. In my opinion it's only surpassed by the mystical Nikon D500.

As already said, try each and see what feels best to you. I would go for the 300s over the 300, minor improvements but worth going for. i have owned a 300 since 2009, great camera and have used everything you can think of, for a period of time. The 7200 or above will give you better high iso low light performance, if that will be a large portion of what you plan to do that would be the better choice. currently using a D7100 for some things, it works well, has nice features and produces nice images. For me feels a little small but useable. I prefer the function buttons on the 300 as opposed to the dial on the 7100 but workable.

macpro8@ If you have a heavy rig, its better per hand to shoot.

Hi can someone please tell me how I can get a clean hdmi output with my Nikon d300? Within hdmi settings there’s only options to change the resolution. There’s no option to remove info from around the screen. The D300 does not have the info button on the back of the camera either so I can’t use that to remove info around the screen. I’ve just purchased the elgato cam link but I have a bad feeling that I’ve just wanted my money in doing so as I can’t seem to get a clean hdmi output on the tv

Hey Roberto, I just did a bit of digging, and unfortunately I don't think the D300 has a clean hdmi feed, sorry! I can't find documentation that explicitly says that, but if you look at this official page for which Nikon cameras can be used for external HDMI recording, the D300 is not listed. Since a clean feed would be required for recording, I think it's safe to say the D300 can't do it. www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/BV_article?articleNo=000006349&configured=1&lang=en_GB

@@raphaeltm_ thank you so much for this mate that was very kind of you to research this for me. I’ve seen articles myself online that say this but I think I’m in denial about the whole thing tbh and need someone else to tell me to pack it in and move on 😢

You wont need more shots for the same wide angle stitched shot since both cameras have the same crop factor! So what are you talking about? It's BS. It's just not true!
@RaphaelTitsworthMorin
@RaphaelTitsworthMorin 4 года назад
I guess what I'm saying wasn't clear, because what I'm saying is actually _specifically predicated_ on the fact that they have the same crop factor. Sorry about that. Here's a better explanation. If I want a 24MP image with a nice wide ~75 degree field of view, I have two options: 1st option is to take 3-4 shots using my 35mm lens (which has a ~37 degree horizontal FOV on DX) on the D300's 12MP sensor. Once stitched together, I could build up an image from those shots that would be 24MP and cover a FOV of ~75 degrees. 2nd option is to take the D7200, which already has a 24MP sensor, and stick my Tokina 11-16mm and shoot it at 15mm, which would have a ~75 degree FOV. Does that better describe what I mean to you? The whole reason this is important to me, is because I like making large prints of big, sweeping panoramas. I could get the same shot with the same lens on both cameras (usually my Tokina), but on the D300, it would be too low res for the prints I want to make. So usually what I did with the D300 was I would get out a 35mm or 50mm lens, and stitch together a few shots, so I would have enough resolution with the same kind of sweeping vista as the Tokina 11-16. With the D7200, I didn't have to do that anymore.
