DA’s Mileham spewed political propaganda - nuclear power is cheaper, safer, faster.

Nuclear physicist Dr Kelvin Kemm was so incensed with DA shadow minister Kevin Mileham’s “political propaganda” on BizNews TV last week, he insisted on setting the record straight. This the globally respected engineer does in forceful fashion in this interview where he addresses popular (mis)perceptions about nuclear power being corrupt, expensive and outdated. Kemm spoke to BizNews editor Alec Hogg.

That's not how the nuclear business works; no "tenderpreneurs" -hence they may not like the idea of nuclear. Nuclear requires government-to-government agreements. Only utilities from skilled countries (mainly Korea, China, Russia, France, and the US) with a strong track record, advanced technology, and a solid financing model can bid. The process also involves securing a low-interest loan that also protects us the customer from project overruns (so no need to worry about the Medupi/kusile situation). Again, what we need to understand is how heavily regulated the nuclear industry is; everything from the smallest screws to the penny is scrutinized, making corruption highly unlikely if not impossible. Koeberg is proof, if you've heard of any corruption at Koeberg, I will buy you a pizza.

Thank you sir… This here is a person who eats and lives nuclear, I remember he was also involved in the SMR that was cancelled in 2011 or so and we were ahead of the world, AHEAD. SA needs nuclear and more of it, built by SAns. We have brains in this country, yes the issue is the politicians but the engineers should never ever be underestimated especially when foreign governments come and employ them for their knowledge and experience. Solar and wind kids are the problem, they are always dragging our progress. Right now they are crying that wind turbines are killing birds; but that’s the tech they’ve been crying for😑.

Oh my goodness, I can't believe I'm here typing a RU-vid Comment because of you Micah, you've found a way to get me here when no one could, congratulations! You've just heard an expert in Nuclear tell you that it'd be very hard to corrupt a nuclear deal/project due to the multitude of regulations (assuming they're way more than any other kind of energy source*) and yet you have conveniently (yet seemingly incoherently) found a way to re-politicise an argument by a respected professional after he de-politicised it, HOW INTELLIGENT OF YOU! You can't even think beyond these "mini nuclear reactors" you speak of while we're dealing with larger issues that affect an entire country of ±60million and it's future - HOW MCLAUGHABLE OF YOU, Micah. If you're really going to think like DA's Mileham, you can absolutely go ahead, but I bet you many people in this country don't need negative people like you, who have nothing positive to say to encourage our hard working and respected engineers. Engineers that still believe that this beautiful country of ours has a future beyond you and every single person like you. You don't need to politicise everything because it collapses any coherent argument you put forward, and this energy crisis we have in this country is one that needs us to get rid of the "hyper"-politicisation around it, otherwise we're doomed by people like yourself, especially those with power. And all this is besides your seemingly separatist thinking for the Western Cape alone🌝. Honestly WOW, you're incredible!

I think two issues are being conflated. The ANC's sterling track record of kleptocracy and safety/efficiency. Nuclear is safe and cheap. That said, if Roscosmos is involved there will be graft. The same applies to Mosgas and the Russians. Chinese 'help' would be even worse. The ANC simply does not understand geopolitics - you are judged by the company you keep. The BRICS concept is doomed, and the S.A. ruling party may not have looked at just who our major trading partners actually are. They make backing the wrong horse into an art form. Finger painting, but an art form nonetheless.

Can we trust that ethical and reliable technicians will run these nuclear installations and not suffer from incompetent interference? In the case of Nuclear, South Africa would likely benifit from a couple more Koeburgs. So far nuclear has delivered as promised. BUT there are some issues. Firstly we never had enough nuclear plants in the world to allow economies of scale to kick in. Thats a fact. Nuclear is expensive. Very expensive. Its all propritory stuff controlled by a very limited number of players. Historic nuclear plants were not as expensive as they are today - but now they have to be 10x safer than they were before. But unfortunatly there are a number of realities applicable in SOUTH AFRICA ONLY. Its a reality and if you want 2 perfect examples look at the two latest coal power stations built by our current goverment. An unmitigated disaster. Its going to take you a (been done once in the US) minimum of 5 years to commision a nuclear plant under optimal conditions in a first world country. We do NOT have particularly relevant experience in nuclear - we built one small plant years ago and those guys have retired, emigrated or died. Why would our next nuclear facility be any different from what has been stuffed up over the last 30 years. ITS NOT UP TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN NUCLEAR PROFFESIONALS! They cannot assure sucess. The South Africans he describes are no longer in South Africa. The "messing around" ensures its failure.

Whether he has vested interest or not, renewables thrive at the redundancy of baseload power, they're insufficient on their own. Besides, if we're gonna move away from coal, we'll need a clean, reliable, industrious dispatchable energy source to build and maintain industry . Nuclear is a 80+ years investment that gives you that option, its cost is worth every penny. Nuclear is the cheapest form of energy for electricity this country has, check the Eskom records, renewables don't come close.

BIASED! How difficult can it be to put the numbers forward! How much does a new 1200MW Reactor cost to build? How much is it going to cost to refurbish the 1200MW after 30-40 years? AND that are the Running Cost's per year, incl. the storage of the very radioavtive waste? Solar cost about r0,15/KWh (no storage) & r0,40/KWh (with 1:4 storage - Batteries is new tech, with no fade - NOT LithiumBased)... Running cost for a 10GWp (2,5GW "BaseLoad" is about 8 FuillTime Security & 1 Engineer) Please put the nuclear numbers forward! P.S. Russia will accomodate any deal with any size "Brown Envelope" - I know for a fact!

This guest might understand nuclear power generation, but his political naivity does detract from his credibility as an authoritative commentator. To be clear, nuclear power is still the best and cleanest form of baseload power in my opinion
