We're about to descend into Gloucester Airfield for an RNAV Approach Runway 27 initially by IAF NIRMO. We then fly a single engine go around, one hold followed by an ILS DME Approach before departing back to Coventry. This is a similar profile that will be flown on the MEIR Skills Test.

What would be nice instead of watching for an hour is to be sat in the back for an hour. Great flying very switched on.

Are you allowed to fly RNAV1 approaches with da42?

Hey Ben, great informative flight, can you please help me with something regarding the hold?, how did you manage to calculate the time outbound so quickly? Can you tell me what way do you follow? It seems accurate. Thank you

+ 1 second for each knot of headwind component. - 1 second for each knot of tailwind.

Hi Ben. You asked your instructor whether tests are now only done at Glos rather than a nav ex elsewhere, but he didn't really answer. I wonder whether that is the case now?

Not sure tbh! It was a couple of years ago now.

On a non- precision approach are you not taught to continue to the procedure MAP at the minimum altitude for the procedure?
@PlaneOldBen
@PlaneOldBen 5 лет назад
You can do that but we were taught to continue down to minimums and then go around.

Interesting I was always taught and tested to continue to the MAP as you can achieve MDA and still be beyond the required vis hence continuing in case landing criteria is achieved. When I did an FAA IR the test involved a non-precision approach to MDA then ‘circle’ at MDA to land on generally a cross runway. You were not allowed to leave circling MDA until you called ‘visual leaving MDA’. Thank goodness we did it in the sim. You do make me wish I was your age and just starting out again.

I think you guys train slightly differently over there!

That's the old way of doing it, diving to the MDA and flying level all the way to the MAPt (dive and drive). The new way of doing it is called CDFA, Continuous Descent Final Approach, which essentially means flying in a way similar to a precision approach by descending down a virtual glidepath to the MDA and treating it as a DA.
