To reach 103 years old is incredible. To reach 103 years old with a lucid mind to remember parts of a song is unbelievable. To reach 103 years old with a lucid mind to remember parts of a song and still keep the rhythm and groove intact while playing them is legendary. Pure admiration
I don't think most people realize just how old this man is. Being 104, he has lived through almost 42% of America's existence. And to be able to keep a beat and be mentally aware enough of his surroundings to actually play the drums is actually insane
Thanks for your astute perspective and observation - check out our jazz album just released open.spotify.com/album/1kOCeKNNKP19NWYTCcjmJK and once there you'll see original music from other genres as well.
He is just now understanding what RU-vid is capable of and it has made him happy! We've been listening to each other - having a musical conversation- for 30 years with Steve on Clarinet and 60 with Dad on drums - be sure to look me up for some original music -jazz/pop/rock and even classical !
Side bonus of a century plus old alpha chad: watching a documentary on the great war ("feeewww I got that close to being born during this horrible mess") while playing "All of me" like it ain't a thing.
Even with the brushes he uses the traditional finger grip. I don’t even do that myself. I hold my brushes the same as with my sticks, 10 and two position. He kept the rhythm perfectly! For me drumming is my rehabilitation after my stroke and ruptured brain aneurism. After watching “Dad” I don’t feel like a late bloomer anymore.
thanks so much for sharing ! Listening is the key so thanks for listening to us ! David and Steve have been having their musical "conversation" for 30 years and Dave and Dad for 60 years -Be sure to check out David Bluefield on Spotify and/or SoundCloud for more of the same (albums with the word "jazz") and alot more ! (Dave toured with Three Dog Night and played with Prince on Stevie Nicks' hit "Standback"! )-And of course, MORE OF DAD on the channel!
Of course, it’s only a matter of keeping up! :) You can check some of the music we’ve recorded over the years if you look for David Bluefield in Spotify or SoundCloud.
That depends on the music. That style of jazz that Leo is playing is upbeat and creative; good for body and mind. Classical music involves more synapses in the brain and is an elevation of the soul.

@@monicaclark9581 That's not fair to say. A lot of Rock music is upbeat and creative, too. Take Rush or Pink Floyd. It's not very nice of you to go around saying rock music is inferior.
@@user-vp1sc7tt4mtrue, but it's rare to see someone that age with good cognitive ability and the memory of the music still locked in. Awesome. My end goal is just to make it to 100 and still have my marbles intact 😄
@@krob5375there's a study that music, even with profound cognitive decline, is one of the last to be forgotten. music has also been known to unlock memories. i've seen dementia residents that can't even remember their families, a song from their youth plays and they can have a memory triggered - a birthday party or even a song played at their child's wedding with so much detail. sometimes even as far as saying... i remember this song from....1946 for example.
Thanks so much for YOUR heart and soul . There's a lot more of Dad and then go searching and tons of original music in pop and rock and even classical genres

His body is quitting on him but his mind is lucid 24/7 and he IS listening - we've been listening to each other for many years - like having a musical conversation - If interested check out Spotify or Soundcloud for original music in all styles by Dave and with Steve as Uptown Strutters
I cared for folks in a home about a year ago now, had a 101 year old WW2 veteran i "cared" for and i put cared in quotations because this man was as sharp as a tack! He could walk with his walker, he could speak perfectly and clearly, he bathed himself, he dressed himself he fed himself, only thing i ever did was make his bed and do his laundry 😂 ive met 96 year olds who were still kicking strongly and barely needed any care, its all about the health folks, not the age ❤️

This truly gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside. For him to be that age and still in his element, doing what he loves. These are the absolute perfection of great memories that no one involved would ever forget.
Never is too late to learn something new or to go after dreams, and a simple chance is all it needs to make it happen, which is what your friend need at this moment, an encouragement to give itself a chance to become its best version, to be happy.
Never too late! I’m in my 40s and learned how to play the piano during the pandemic. I love it and am finally seeing the results from approx 15-30 mins of daily practice. Also started to learn a new language. These hobbies and interests keep the mind active and makes life more fun.
I like this! It is so true in most cases. I've been lifting weights since I was 19 and I'm 48 now and stronger now than I ever was. But I don't dare stop because I've seen that it's hard to get back on the horse once you're off. This inspires me to keep going at my hobbies and skills and also to start developing new ones to take into old age, God willing.
If this video doesn't inspire you, nothing will. At 66, I'm a drummer who has been wondering how long I will be able to play for. Now I know what's possible. Thank you!!!
Bass player here, also 66. Been wondering the same thing. A lot of musicians I've known for a long time are sitting down on their gigs now. I won't do it. Not yet!
Keep on drumming and strumming and hooting and tooting. Dad passed away two days ago. He was 93. He’d have loved this. Wish I found this a week ago so that I could have played it to him. He had dementia, we lost him in stages, but the main part of his personality persisted throughout. I admired him so much for making so much of what he had. I just know he’d have loved this. Not because they were old like he was but because these guys put down a solid beat.
So sorry❤️ Play it for him anyway even if you don’t think he can hear it. I believe that only our bodies die. I still talk to my dead husband, mother and father❤️❤️❤️They leave me signs.
I'm so moved I'm crying. I'm 29 and in debt but I'm not going to stop studying jazz because I want to grow old and love music as much as he does for as long as I'm able.
Also 29. Also in debt. Also a musician (albeit not a jazz musician). I don't think we really have a choice do we? We know what we have to do to feel fulfilled in this life. I can tell by your comment you've been called to do this as well, even if it seems completely unattainable at times/ a majority of the time. The love you put into your music will shine through and resonate when it's meant to and especially when it's truly authentic. So follow your ear and follow your heart and let me know how/where I can support you!
@eddiepeach3975 I’m 34 and I pay my bills playing music. I’m pretty poor and stress about money all the time but I did it. Been doing it professionally for over a decade. Whether or not you study in school or on your own never give up
If you go from the beginning to the end of the video, the tempo’s slowed quite a bit by the end, but that could be intentional. It’s a great video, and I’m happy for this family :]
@@KyleCrocodile Eh.....? The guy is 103 years old. He was 24 when WWII ended. He was 33 When Elvis came around. He was 41 when The Beatles came from Hamburg. When Stravinsky was still semi-populair this guy was a teen.
You can see by the expression on his face that he still feels the drive and passion he had decades ago, though his joints and limbs have created a barrier to full expression, he still has the feeling. Super cool.

Old people are great. They are like hidden jewels. If you ever get a chance to talk to one who is cognizant then you should ask them about the price of their first house and the earliest price of gas they remember and things like that. It's very interesting and rewarding. Even if they look different than they did forty years ago they are still people and enjoy a good chitchat.
@@tonysisemore958 I'm 68, feel even more young now! When I was around 2 my parents bought a house in Victoria, Australia for £3,000 which is roughly equivalent to $6,000..
The most amazing thing for me is how he varies the drum's intensity so subtly at exactly the perfect moments. Not only does he still have considerable power, he has more control than some youngsters out there.
we are in essence having a musical conversation based on listening and reacting -thanks for noticing. Here is our single of All of Me open.spotify.com/track/6Osj2QruTWqgmC5vTbfPRJ?si=4a9c1c7a1cf640be
For me the most impressive thing is a 103 yo living metronome with such dynamic feeling. Usually I listen to metal drummers, but this is a really own art of music I like

The intention behind every single one of the notes played here is incredibly passionate, even if there’s a little hiccup here and there, it genuinely doesn’t matter. There’s an unbreakable energy that’s coming from their love of music and it’s absolutely beautiful

My grandfather passed away in his 60s but thankfully he loved uploading to youtube, so my mom and i still watch his videos whenever. Still playing the drums 🥁 enjoy these moments. Ty for sharing!
You have got some REAL MUSICIANS here folks. The drummer keeping good time. I have 33 years to catch up with him. He keeps better time than I do. Great job fellas.

My mother was a musician (piano and vocal), she gigged after she retired at 65 for 10 years until a knee injury ended that. I was a working musician & band leader for over 20 years until a neurological issue affected my hands..This is absolutely Gold watching this.. Thank you. I hope you play for another 30 years.. 👍🙏💜🥁
I played professionally as a rock guitarist and singer 45 years ago, and over the years I've grown to love jazz. Why? Because I can't play it, but I can understand it. These guys are great. Good for your grand daddy!
Thanks for listening. We are, of course, overwhelmed by the attention and to that end have included more jazz with Dad (soon to be 104) on the channel (so please follow) as well as original -other genres- songs on Spotify. open.spotify.com/track/6Osj2QruTWqgmC5vTbfPRJ?si=4a9c1c7a1cf640be
spot on - my mom asked me -when I was 13- if I would play the piano if she bought one and I said why not - and she said "you'll thank me later" and it is 60 years later !

Thank you so much for the video. We're incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to listen to this gem. I was born in 88, experiencing the artistry of a 103-year-old jazz drummer is truly a refreshing change. After immersing myself in the intensity of heavy metal, with its complex polyrhythms and relentless blast beats, listening to this jazz drummer play brings a sense of peace and authenticity. His music has a soulful simplicity that transcends technicality, providing a deep connection to the roots of rhythm and melody. The gentle swing and subtle nuances in his drumming tell a story of decades spent perfecting his craft. It's a reminder that music isn't just about speed or complexity-it's about conveying emotion and creating a lasting impact. This jazz legend brings the heart back into the music, offering a timeless sound that rejuvenates the soul. May your dad lives another 100 years old more

Oh, you lucky man, to have your Dad for so long. I miss my Dad everyday, he was a great guy. Your Dad is so cute. Give him a big hug and enjoy every moment.
This is what life is about. Three lives long-run, and still celebrating together and creating life through their art. Thank you for sharing this groovy tune, sir. Mighty kind, and mighty fine work indeed.
Thank you! This is so fun! My dad lived to 96. During WW2 he played jazz trombone in the navy dance band. Cherish these moments and thanks for spreading joy. You guys are awesome! 🎶

yeah, who knew a living room with a carpet and zero electricity could sound so authentic - duh! right? btw how many bass players does it take to change a light bulb? NONE the pianist can do it with his left hand! THanks for your appreciation and do check out our original music on Spotify and SoundCloud.
This is so awesome, as a drummer, I don’t want to ever not be interested or not able to play drums, and I pray I can live as long as this man and still play!
As my son's keep telling me Age is just a number I'm a 52 year old visually impaired drummer I'll be happy to keep jamming as long as I can It keeps us musicians going Happy Birthday 🎉❤🎉
