Dad, I Wanna Buy An Orange County Choppers Motorcycle, What Could Go Wrong?

OCC choppers may have been the stuff of teenage dreams, but poor workmanship and dubious mechanical choices make OCC choppers a pain to ride. Shows like American Chopper on the Discovery Channel capitalized on the chopper craze of the ‘90s and early 2000s. Orange County Choppers and the Teutuls became household names for their chopper builds and explosive on-screen drama. Of all the styles of motorcycles that have come and gone into popularity, the chopper may have been the least practical. Sure, stretched out front forks, and raked back handlebars might have been the coolest thing since neon underglow, but they’re not the most comfortable to spend long hours in the saddle with.
Admittedly, Orange County Choppers builds were unique, theme-built custom choppers around Harley-Davidson motors, which really captured the imagination of gear heads of the time. They weren’t cheap either, with OCC custom-builds valued at well over the $100,000 mark. But as RU-vidr Bikes and Beards recently found out when he bought a 17-year-old OCC chopper for a fraction of the cost, the bikes are nowhere near the kind of riding experience you’d expect for the money.

"Tuned in for the workmanship" made me bust out laughing ! My dad used to watch this show and sometimes I would watch it with him. He used to point out to me and be amazed at all the items that they fabricated; and I used to say to him I do all that same stuff ! I know working at a valve company that fabricates distribution assemblies for polychemical refineries is not all that exciting but it is the same skill set (if not harder!). He would just laugh and say " No one is filming where you work at" and he was right; it was a real job with real consequences for yelling at your boss everyday !!!

@tjroelsma
@tjroelsma 8 месяцев назад
Yeah, the engine being able to fire up just made them a bit easier to move and maybe to show off the bike on a parking lot. They certainly weren't meant to ride around town, let alone do highway miles on them. And the way they were assembled, it was a miracle they ran at all. These guys may have been fairly competent welders; they knew nothing about wiring looms, fuse boxes etc. One of their bikes kept on failing electrically and it was discovered that everything on that bike was wired through the tail light, so when that light popped, as it did often because it acted like an overdrawn fuse, the bike would die.

OCC bikes are over-priced trash. The Geico bike they built was valued by OCC at $140,000, and it just recently sold for $10,000, with the trailer, and the RC boat included. I saw another OCC built bike they valued at $80,000, after the owner had it for a year he sold it for $8,000. They are poorly built, have all kinds of problems, no warranty, and are very dangerous to ride. Some of them have very bad brakes, and on a heavy bike that is bad news. If you bought one, you got robbed. And the giveway bikes they made were even worse than the regular bikes. The wiring was bad, the battery does not stay charged, the front brakes are worthless, and they were so stingy building it they did not even put a primary drive cover on it, so if your pants got in it you end up with a chewed up leg. They said they were worth $60,000 to $80,000, and when the owners tried to sell them they were lucky to get $10,000 for them, or less.

As a lifelong rider, I have to chime in here. To help establish my background, I started riding when I was 12 on a Honda 50 Sport - not the step-thru sissy kind. I've raced 250 Bull Taco's in half-mile dirt flat track racing, Raced the same bikes in motocross, as well as jumped a few cars off ramps, I got my first 54 Panhead when I was 16 and rode and rebuilt that bike many miles and many times. Been in a couple 1% support clubs, Rented or owned just about every Harley ever made as well as many many other makes and models, and currently own a 07 Big Dog K9 Chopper. OCC bikes are not Choppers. They were corporate billboards and in my mind represented everything a chopper ain't. I thought the show itself sucked but who cares right? Jessie James Bikes are choppers and so were Indian Larry's bikes along with some other builders. As far as rideability is concerned - it comes down to each individual bike. You can just say all choppers suck when it comes to how they handle or for that matter how reliable they are. The worst bike (s) I've personally ever ridden are a lot of stock Harley's with the Electra Glide full dresser being the worst. Besides sitting on top of the bike as opposed to sitting down in the bike (like on a Chopper) you get the full force of the wind hitting you straight on so you have to attach a stupid windshield to bock it and that top rim at 6'4" hits me right at eye level. That same windshield caught a huge gust of wind coming around a tractor-trailer going up a hill hauling ass putting the bike into a death wobble. Anyone who has ever experienced one of these at a high speed knows all you can do is hold on, not overreact and hope you are right with Jesus. 800 pounds of underpowered, overpriced crap as far as I'm concerned. With that as a personal experience, as far as I'm concerned, all bikes are cool. But again, OCC bikes were not Choppers and were made for corporate advertising/marketing purposes.

OCC has become famous for building fabulous looking bikes that are either next to or completely unrideable. I'm willing to bet there's not a single build made by them that has 1,000 miles on it. Most don't even get ten miles in their entire lifetimes. They're SHOWPIECES, not built for or intended to drive, at all. Yeah, they'll start, usually. But ride one? No thank you.

I know two guys who bought OCC bikes back in the day. One paid 65k and the other 80k (these are the prices i was told, I didn't see invoices). They look good from thirty feet away but the welds and paint looked like a dog chewed on them up close. They are also unreliable, uncomfortable pieces of shit. I used to work with a kid who built Harley hard tails as a side hustle and he put together better looking and running bikes out of his garage in his spare time than OCC could with a full crew and multi-million dollar shop. The problem with both is that they are powered by a gutless EVO motor. The more expensive of the two OCC customs had an S&S in it and still barely had the power to get out of it's own way. I went riding with the kid that did it out of his garage and one of his friends and got told my poor little 750 wouldn't even be able to keep up with the 1200s. After his buddy peeled off we stopped at a light and I gave him the jump off the line and let him grab second before I took off. He was in third by the time I blew by him still in first gear. TLDR: Custom Harleys are like putting lipstick on a pig or fake tits on an octogenarian. Also, when you ride a V4 that's just starting to make good power at a Harleys redline then picking on them is a fun past time.

I knew a guy years ago that had a chopped out Bonneville. The rake was bad, and the front tire would skip back and forth. I found that out when I took it for a ride once. Never would get near it again. My closest friend at the time had a slightly chopped out Harley. This was 42 years ago. It ran and cornered so smoothly. He could hit 110 easily. We did the work on it. It was tight. May he RIP. He lost his bout to diabetes. Never had an accident. I used to enjoy those shows. Never had a desire for one. Most were to quickly built for a fake deadline to add to the drama. And you could look at it and your back would hurt. Some had hot engine parts to close to the rider, barely a seat. Open drive chains,etc.. They were for a short ride to a bar, or to be displayed.Some were overpowered, most were under powered. The wiring was quick and more designed for a bike built 100 years ago. Some to close to moving or hot parts. Etc....... You needed a jump box just to start them. Overpriced.

*Indian Larry's Grease Monkey panhead chopper* was the epitome of what a chopper should be. While a lot of people could argue for a front brake and other safety features, the first time that I saw the Grease Monkey in *Easyrider's Magazine* I knew that I would seldom, if ever see another chopper to equal it. As much as the stretched fork choppers recieved 99% of the attention from fans and media, for me the Grease Monkey and other similar bikes that were *RIDEABLE* were the bikes that I fell in love with. I never saw an Orange County Chopper's creation that could hold a candle to a bike like the Grease Monkey. An over the top bling chopper doesn't equal great art. Regardless of how much some new money idiot is willing to spend on one.

There are a whole lot of shops that build "custom bikes" like these, not only OCC. A serious biker would never consider buying one for his daily ride. They're meant more as works of art to be displayed as a statement in the corner of a living room of a wannabe biker with too much money. Or hung as decoration on the wall at a biker bar for all to gawk at and shiver in horror. Most of them will probably end up on the scrap heap in 20 year time because of just how useless they are. Real choppers though are on the road for decades. My brothers Harley is over 40 years old and still going strong. And I've even seen one on the road from 1972!

Went to OCC when they were in their hayday. The store and showroom very cool. And they had all the theme bikes they did for TV in the showroom. I was shocked by the poor quality of workmanship. The welding was shop class grade 9. The fab pieces were just ugly and, in most cases, seemed out of place. We went over to Jrs shop, and where Cody worked. While we were greeted nicely and they were extremely hospitable. These other shops were more of the same poor quality. The other positive was the paint. Whoever did their painting really did nice work.

And did the issue with the bikes that they built after they became famous come about because of the producers of the show trying to force time frames? I mean they were around for quite a while before the show weren’t they? And you don’t last if you don’t put out a decent product. So what about all the bikes people bought from them before the show? This is wild. Custom everything lol. Most of this crap was bolt on parts. Bolt on parts that didn’t fit with bikes that were never complete. This show was about parts advertisement except the show made the parts companies look bad. The theme bikes were junk and plagued with problems and bad workmanship but they made tons of money on them. Everyone knows custom motorcycles don’t hold value but when you cannot get back 10% of the original price (not investment) you really created a pile of hot garbage. High five.

I like Shawn and I like to show, but let's be serious. Anybody who buys an Orange County chopper is buying it for the novelty. Not for the finished quality. It's to say that I bought a bike from orange county chopper. Secondly, nobody buys a hard tail and complains about the ride that's just morronic. Of course it's ruff.... The bikes were built most of the time in mere weeks, and they were tepically built to be sold in fund raisers.....they are show bikes.....
