Humbug is the third studio album by English rock band Arctic Monkeys, first released on 19 August 2009 through Domino Recording Company. The band started to write new material for the album towards the end of summer 2008 and finished it entirely in spring 2009. Like their previous release, Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007), Humbug was released first in Japan, followed by Australia, Brazil, Ireland, and Germany, on 21 August 2009. It was then released in the UK on 24 August 2009, in the US the following day, and in Greece on 31 August.
Wholly recorded in the United States, the band worked with American musician Josh Homme, who produced tracks recorded in Los Angeles and the Mojave Desert alongside New York City recordings produced by James Ford. Musically, the album is a departure from the garage rock and punk-influenced sound of the band's previous work, incorporating elements of stoner rock, desert rock, surf rock, and ambient tones. Homme has been credited by writers for introducing the album's darker sound. Percussion instruments were used on the album, including xylophones, glockenspiels, and shakers. Frontman Alex Turner's vocals on the album are noted as a drastic change from the frenetic and upbeat delivery of Arctic Monkeys' previous albums to a slower and more hushed approach. Turner's songwriting also is a departure from his kitchen-sink realism poetry, instead being replaced by analogy.
The album's release preceded the band's headlining performances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals at the end of that week. It topped the UK Albums Chart and has been certified platinum in the UK. Though Humbug did not receive the extent of acclaim that both Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006) and Favourite Worst Nightmare did by critics, it nevertheless received generally positive reviews, with critics noting that the band expanded their sound and themes, while the album's tone was recognised as darker than the band's previous records. Retrospectively, Humbug is considered one of the band's most important records, with many noting it as containing various musical styles and lyrical themes the band would further explore on later releases

You're spot on about the chemistry and Turner being different compared to his stage persona. He also always give the others their credit, even though he's the obvious star of the band from the outside.

If your dad thinks that this one's (positively) heavy, then you just _gotta_ finish it up with _Suck It and See_ soon. That's the heaviest they've ever been. Hard fucking rock. And then the other half is just some of the loveliest, sweetest, saddest and most heart-wrenchingly romantic stuff you've ever heard. Shoegaze-y. Borderline dream pop. Such a great mosaic of an album. The distilled essence of Arctic Monkeys, in a way. Like, if you mashed all of their albums together, _Suck it and See_ is probably what would come out.

Love these vids. Dad is a cool dude. You should do Alex Turners other music like The Last Shadow Puppets.

That organized chaos is totally from Josh Homme, the producer, who developed that sound playing in QOTSA. It’s very very similar to the Hungarian scales developed by the Romani (gypsy) people. It utilizes tritones and other things heard more commonly in the Middle East and Asia which give it that “uncomfortable” sound our Western ears aren’t used to. It has a dissonance that was eventually labeled “The Devil’s Chord” being seen as dark and evil by Europeans whom oppressed the Romani people. The sound sneaked its way into popular music with legends like Django Reinhardt and Cab Calloway which then went to Jimi Hendrix, Dick Dale, Black Sabbath, etc. It’s been used by so many artists but Josh Homme just utilizes it in such a way that really makes him the king of “Desert Stoner Rock”.

I noticed the timbre of the guitars are also similar to the scores of old western movies too which attribute to that dry desert sound.

They did Pretty Visitors, Cornerstone, and Secret Door when I saw them for the first time in 2018 and it was soooooo amazing. They did a lot of Humbug songs when I saw them in September 23’ for their The Car tour. They’re amazing performers!! I’m so glad you guys finally covered this one, it’s definitely my favorite album from them. I never skip any of the songs on this one
