Lie is just genius.... the composition being mostly in a minor key is what makes it sound so haunting.... the chorus then going into a major ('lighter'/'happier') key just messes with your brain ..... genius....

Discovered KPOP while dog-sitting in Lake Arrowhead in the mountains of California for 2 weeks for my sister. First saw Gdragon on an MTV channel for KPOP and BTS when they were just babies. Came home and started watching K dramas and music videos. The first BTS video was Dope, I've been an Army ever since. It's been great watching them grow for the last 10 years. Best rabbit hole you can ever fall in!

Lie is the one...the song that got through to my ears. Back in 2018 (I think) my daughter had me listening to this 'new group' she discovered called BTS. She was going through an extremely rough patch in her life, and I was doing all I could to be supportive of her, so okay I suppose, even though non-English music held little appeal to me. (I prefer my heavy metal lol). So every day, she would ask if I wanted to listen to BTS, and every day I said sure, but my heart just wasn't into it. And then......this song came up while I was in the middle of working on something that really had all of my attention. I heard this melody, and the key change, and the anguish in his voice and suddenly I wanted to cry. Never felt anything like it in my life. I had her play it twice after that. The next day, it was the first song she played when I got to my store where she worked for me, and I have been shamelessly enthralled by this stuff ever since.
Thanks for that I had missed their word vomit. These guys have such a great theory concepts that they can see in the music that we just see as good music. Jimin's Lie is truly a masterpiece.

Just to clear up a couple of things that the woman said at the start of the video: “Lie” was actually written by Jimin along with Docskim, Sumin, Hitman Bang, and Pdogg. Also, though he is insanely talented, Jimin did not compose “Lie”. The credit for that goes mostly to Docskim. He sampled “La vida breve” which is from an opera written by Manuel de Falla in the early 1900s. Yes, I am a nerd who finds it interesting to research stuff like this. I did because I love the song. It absolutely floored me the first time I heard it, and it still gives me goosebumps. 💜

Yes, Lie is "that deep" Lol ! This song (and the live performance that you must watch one day Nesto ) is a peace of art. Magnificent classical sound, deep lyrics, amazingly expressive vocals, beautiful and captivating choreography and mesmerizing Jimin. Jimin had full participation in the writing and composition of this masterpiece. Each solo in the Wings album is related to the BU (bangtan Universe) aka the fictional storyline witch run threw MV and albums since "I need you", specially the short films. So the lyrics of Lie fits to the fictional character played by Jimin but it's also related to Jimin himself, the struggles he faced, and we can feel the authentic emotions and pain. The Wings album revolves around the concept of Hermann Hesse’s novel, ‘Demian: The Story of Emil Sinclair’s Youth’, a coming of age piece that uses myths and references to follow the journey of a young boy to self-realization. One of the key points of this book is the importance of accepting the “dualism”, the idea of two opposing forces (maybe good and bad or truth vs fake) that are both necessary in life. This idea is portrayed by Jimin’s solo where we see an inner fight between his two sides, his true and insecure self, and this mask that he created to face the world but is swallowing him up (as in the verse : the prey vs the snake) . It’s a complex song where metaphors, vocal and music composition details mix to vignette a cry for help (that's "text painting" ;) ) . ex: "caught in a lie" is the only line of the song in a major key (usually associated with happiness), while the rest of the song is in a minor key (usually associated with sadness, mystery, unease). So, the line "caught in a lie" is itself a lie amongst the rest of the song - the "happiness" is a lie ! And the repetitive triple beat makes the entire song very suspenseful, always driving forwards restlessly towards something without resolution (emphasised by the sudden ending of the song) This song is a portrait of what struggling with your identity, insecurities and inner demons is. RM explained that Jimin used to blame himself for all the failures and shortcomings, having thoughts like “I’m not good enough, I can’t do this” and that he wrote the song reflecting that mentality. Don't worry Nesto... I play flute, oboe, and baritone. I played in everything from orchestra to jazz band.... and half of what they said went over my head too. I got some of it as well as some what they didn't say... but text painting? Nope... that isn't something we learned. But this is why many of us say that they need to stop calling BTS K-Pop... because they are way beyond just K-Pop.
A Pickardy third is a sudden major chord in a minor composition. Because the difference between major (happy sound)and minor (sad sound) relies on the third of the scale, lowering it a half step from its usual tone to create a minor chord. The note that is jarring to even the untrained ear is the third being raised back to its usual tone. This is a Pickardy third. They were speculating that this change to a major third on the word Lie gives the lie to the entire thing. The happy exterior he presents to the world is a lie in and of itself.
