I love how your dads been so humble about his opinions on rap, but now that he’s starting to truly understand rap, specifically Kendrick, he seems so confident in understanding the message(which he always understands). You’ve obviously sparked a deep love inside of him through this, thank you for always sharing the experience with us and for introducing him to these masterpieces

See, I think we as a people like watching reaction videos and actually get a feel good vibe from them because we see something that is actually lightning in a bottle during our lifetime, those moments where we discover something we are going to end up loving. Sometimes we see that happening on reaction videos, we see the development on the view, the deep interest. It is truly a beautiful thing.

BLOOD is also a callback to How Much A Dollar Cost. When he sees the blind woman, he remembers the lesson he learned in HMADC and defies his cautious instincts, only to lose his life over it. This sets up the depression and the feeling of being lost and forsaken by God (ain’t nobody prayin for me) that stays across the whole album.

As for “what happens on earth stays on earth,” I interpret it as Kendrick talking to himself trying to deal with how small he is compared to the universe, telling himself to zoom in for a sec n focus on what’s in front of him. The whole album is about grappling with simultaneously feeling like the whole world is out to get you and yet you’re insignificant. That duality of perspective is in the title too, feeling damned ofc but also understanding that the world is so big there’s nothing you can say but DAMN

Also “BLOOD.” is a reference to the Bloods. Which is what all of Kendrick’s friends are. The “blind lady” that needs his help is the gang. All she wants is his life. BLOOD. ties back to DUCKWORTH. & it basically explains what would would’ve happened had his father died. He would’ve ended up in the gang life. “….while i grew up without a father & die in a gunfight” followed by the immediate rewind back to BLOOD. was a perfect tie in.

What I love about Your channel vs others. Is your dad is a BLACK MAN. He has lived these experiences like other black children who Kendrick is speaking too. Any race can appreciate the music, but it takes an elderly black man to respect the perspective on a deep level. The language, lingo, and vibe is something he can tune into without much effort.

I was just posting something similar on their reaction video to GKMC when someone compared them to turning the tables. I do enjoy the latter's work, but especially on hip hop albums (or any "black music") nothing beats the reviews of people who can truly decode and contextualize all the meanings.

I remember listening to a podcast that dissects albums. They dissected "YAH" and what I found was super cool is "YAH" is short for "Yahweh". The radar is buzzin' like Kendrick is talking to God over a radio frequency. When Kendrick goes to the line "But it's money to get, bitches to hit, yah Zeroes to flip, temptation is, yah First on my list, I can't resist, yah", Kendrick has all of these evil thoughts like "hitting bitches", "temptation", etc. but at the end of all of those lines "YAH" comes in like God is trying to communicate through all the wickedness. Found that kinda cool.
@mattlawrence1932
@mattlawrence1932 Год назад
Yah is actually God so u can't really speak both names as two different identities 💯 they're just two different names for two different religions but they're both the same exact person!!!!!! Yet it's actually blasphemous to call either of them by both names!!!! Atleast to the folks that read from the actual Torah & not a "Bible" apperently 💯

Kendrick has said the album is supposed to be played in reverse order so in that case, its like everything he's done up to blood, is the cause of his death. Succumbing to lust, pride and his soulful desires, eventually leading to him being killed unexpectedly. I can see the blind woman representing judgement, exacting the will of God without bias, but punishing him rightfully for his wrongs, but thats just one interpretation of many. Amazing album

@gaymerman3420

The lines “Is it wickedness? Is it weakness?” basically make this album into a choose your own story type of album and are actually the most important lines of the entire album. Every song on the album can fall under either wickedness or weakness and they alternate, for example, BLOOD. is weakness because obviously kendrick dies in the song and the song also has a softer tone. DNA. would be wickedness because of how aggressive and boastful the song is. When you play the album in order, kendrick eventually follows the path of “weakness” and finds god. Once you play it in reverse, the entire story is flipped and he eventually goes down the path of “wickedness” and dies in BLOOD. because of it. It could also be perceived as if playing the album in reverse tells the story of kendrick if anthony killed ducky. Hopefully i explained it well enough this is all from my memory of an analysis i watched on DAMN.

There was a really interesting or maybe important line in Lust. When he says “lately in James 4:4 friend of the world is enemy of the lord.” I think this is what Kendrick is battling he doesn’t want to be damned if he becomes a friend of the world.(Mainly the world’s social systems AKA, 7 deadly sins) Lust being one of them and Pride, etc. And that is where the duality theme can come from, the duality being Kendrick’s effort to battle trying not to be damned.

This album is wonderful and just as ripe for dissection as TPAB!!! Kendrick said this album is his personal favorite that he's done and I can see why. An important factor my girlfriend pointed out to me with DAMN was that the album had a non-linear narrative, as opposed to TPAB which tells one consecutive story. (With occasional callback and narrative parallels) What my gf explained to me was that basically, BLOOD and DUCKWORTH are bookends to an anthology of songs that comprise this "mixtape". I personally believe that the LP as a whole is more in line with the mixtape feel, even forgetting the literal presence of a dj. It's up to the listeners to connect this massive jigsaw puzzle Kendrick has laid out in front of us. He's told us a deeply complex story, told out of order, and gave us everything we needed to deduce how everything in this album was connected. The more you revisit this album, an interconnectedness starts to be noticed throughout various subject matters and styles. Personally, I love the album, and the way he put together a project as rich and multi-faceted as this goes to show why this album won the pullitzer. Just like everything Kendrick puts out, this shit's pretty deep! Sidenote: I'm so excited for the release of Mr Morale & The Big Steppers and your guys' eventual reaction. You're becoming one of my fave youtube channels, so keep it up! :]

If you don’t know at the start he doesn’t actually die but she says that because he has no purpose in life. That’s why it goes from pride to humble and lust to love and he is learning. You can choose if he lives or dies.The one you did was weakness,because he isn’t evil by the end of the album.But if you play the tracks from end to start,it all changes and he gets a bad ending as he is slowly learning how to be wicked.

Been watching these Kendrick reaction vids with you and your pops today, and I'm really loving it! And his dad jokes, very sweet interaction. I don't think I could do this with my dad when it comes to music, but sometimes we are able to when it comes to film. Thanks for sharing with us his introductions to the music you listen to.

Yo, I really appreciate how you two get into the sound of the music and the feeling of the music. The technical chat is great. Sometimes I yell at the videos like "Yesss, DISECT THE ALBUM!" I enjoy hearing Rod Sr. make those deep connections or do call backs to connect the theme of the album. Fire content, as per usual. Had to turn the notifications on!

XXX is a play on censorship. In the song, you hear many examples of America. Kendrick gets cut short on some of his lines. XXX is USA, but censored.

I know I'm late to this but the title of this album was SUPER close to being "What Happens on Earth, Stays on Earth", as your father pointed out multiple times but Kendrick thought it was too long. Eventually that title was changed to DAMN . because "damned if i do and damned if i dont" and that's what he felt after such power hitting songs like DNA. and HUMBLE. I think it's a perfect title. After every song I just sit and think "Damn....." We're witnessing a generational legend, one of the greatest to ever do it.

THANK. YOU. Edit: I heard your dad say he was gonna listen to it again. Tell him to listen to it IN REVERSE this time. 😭 No point in listening to it again in the same order bro I promise you playing it 14-1 will really give him the conclusion to the album. Good review tho. He was literally on point with everything. 👌🏽

@@ChildishGambeaner it’s mostly his evolution and what he says, his voice was a turn off to me at first but as i started listening it’s what made him unique in his lane, he brought us into his world as you listened, i recommend just listening to circles, than swimming, and go backwards from there

@@ChildishGambeaner in my opinion the production level on Mac’s songs is insane. With the last three albums especially being a whole vibe. Like with TPAB, it’s hard to pick out individual songs to listen to on their own, but give yourself time to listen to the whole albums and just zone out to it, it’s incredible.

It definitely makes more sense to give him a Pulitzer prize 🏆 for "To Pimp a Butterfly 🦋" especially because of how jazzy & unique & deeply structured & perfectly thought out that album truly is compared to any other rap album ever made in history & i also thought that's the album he actually won the Pulitzer prize for too at first but I'm not mad that he got it for this album because this has three of K.dot's best songs ever💯💯💯💯💯 LOYALTY , GOD , & LOVE & basically every song from the "Good Kid mAAd city" album & of course his feature verse on SiR's "Hair Down" single from his "Chasing Summer" album (Best R&B album since the mid 90's literally) are all by far my favorite songs of this K.dot man that was ironically born on the same exact day as me , in the same exact year & went through all the similar life trials & tribulations as I did only I wasn't a "good kid" like him but I realized how much that both of us Gemini ♊ do have the same exact mentality as eachother & I didn't even know anything about Kendrick Lamar other than his name untill long after I discovered all those things about him that we actually had in common with eachother & that's what forced me into listening to his music finally 💯 Crazy huh???? 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Your dad saying stuff about the demonic nature of it the “reverse”, I wonder if there’s something deeper to that. Most times, Kendrick’s albums are about the journey of a hero (I’m a music major, so that’s the best way I could explain it. It’s a common theme in operas). With his fear of failure or “reverting back to his ways” and stuff, I wonder if the reverse is a story of a fall from grace or something. Rather than a journey people can be inspired from, a story so many other people who aren’t Kendrick fall victim to. Idk what there is in that, but something I’m definitely gonna have to check out
