Funny your daddy mentioned Dr. Dre on Mr. Ice Cream Man, when in fact that song is sampled from World Class Wreckin Cru - Turn Off The Lights . A Group Dr. Dre was in before N.W.A
Master P really changed rap. Before everyone thought you needed a major label to sell a million albums. Before P mixtapes were for hard-core fans and industry people. He raised the quality and sold it to the average rap fan. He was making so much money when big record companies started trying to buy his record company he told them to kick rocks so they just gave him a distribution deal just to get a piece of the action. Once people started to see P get rich owning his on music it really got so many rappers to not wait for a major label and go independent like him. He broke the whole sellout idea in rap. McHammer got called a sellout for being a rapper and entrepreneur before P but after P Jay-Z was called a genius for doing the same thing. He really doesn't get the credit he deserves.
He still needed a major label to distribute his music. No Limit was originally distributed by Priority Records the same label that distributed Ruthless. After that deal was up No Limit signed to Universal in 2001. He definitely didn't raise the quality because none of his artists lasted. DMX and Jay Z were the biggest artists during their run.
He soaked up game from the independent artists’ rap scene in the Bay Area in Northern California , he was rapping out of Richmond California early in his career.
I love that Mia X was your favorite! She is considered by some as the best No Limit had to offer! Just to throw out a couple No Limit songs to check out: Master P - Break Em Off Somethin; TRU - No Limit Soldiers; TRU - Bout it, Bout it; Young Bleed - How Ya Do Dat
That was a highlight for me. Growing up back then and being named Mia, I knew all of her parts and was always called by one of her monikers; the unladylike diva, the biggest Mama Mia…
You HAVE to put dad on Mystikal he's easily the best artist but he's 1 of a kind. Both of y'all mentioned something that relates 1. You mentioned kind of a Busta Rhymes style you have to do their collab song. 2. Dad mentioned James Brown and Mystikal actually called himself "The James Brown of Rap" Mystikal is the 1 guy of a group like Andre 3000, Wayne that doesn't miss. He delivers on his verse every time especially when you get tuned in to actually hear what he saying obviously he raps fast. But he isn't just throwing random words together fast he's actually saying some fiya ish!
The dude with the "Busta Rhymes vibes is MYSTICAL. Definitely worth diving into as a solo artist. MYSTICAL was so technical. So many songs. "Here I Go" "Danger" "Shake it Fast" "Bumpin Me Against The Wall" "Tarantula " "I Smell Smoke". So talented.
Mia X is so talented & beautiful. She was one of the first women to be a part of a male crew. She kind of set the precedent for the guys to have a leading lady in their crew like Lil Kim in Junior Mafia, Foxy Brown in the Firm, Trina in Slip N Slide, Gangsta Boo in 36Mafia…Mia X started that trend.
He sampled The O'Jays' song Brandy on I Miss My Homies. They basically took the chorus from that song and switched it up a little bit. If you have a chance, check how the song. It's said to be about a dog lol
P always sample r&b 17 reasons on 99 ways to die = earth wind fire reasons I got candy = candy Pop goes my 9 = Pop goes my mind ETC No limit always had good samples
It's funny that your dad mentioned Dr. dre synths becuz the ice cream man song is a take on one of Dre's 1st ever productions.. "Turn out the light" by world class wrecking crew
Master P is one of hip hop’s most influential and successful moguls. He paved the way for independent labels and artists. While most artists went the major route, Master P bypassed the major labels & built his empire selling his tapes and CD’s independently out the trunk of his car. That’s why the sound and artwork might be considered by some as “unpolished.” The artwork & sound is now legendary.
Masterp P turned $10,000 into millions. He also changed the whole rap game at the time. Even album art. Everyone copied the no limit style. He taught people how to make your own label, clothing line, He even started a cell phone company. He was the first true entrepreneur in rap.
Fell the same..I never thought he could rap and always turned the song down or off when he came on.. he rapped off beat..but waited for my boy Mystikal
When Mystikal signed to No Limit, it was a huge thing, and I think this was his debut song with the label. Mystikal was already a well known and popular artist. His energy is next level, and super creative and animated. Definitely some tracks from him ya'll should listen to.
Actually, if I remember correctly, Mystikal's first appearance on No Limit was on 'It's On' by Steady Mobb'n. I could be wrong but I remember tripping about it back when it happened being a fan of him prior to his No Limit days...
@@lemarcusmalvo3311 yeh. That could be. I can't remember exactly, but my cousin and I were big Mystikal fans also. From the 'Mind of Mystikal' days and maybe some mixtapes before then. But hearing him with No Limit and the energy he brought was next level. I hate the way his career ended up going.
Master P is respected for his genius. As an artist, he was not that strong and it didn't matter. He brought the dope game mindset into the music business. He flooded the streets with the CDs. Quantity over Quality. I was a teen in those years, and we were like crackheads. Every few months there was another cd coming out that we had to have. I have bought so many No Limit CDs! 🤣🤣🤣
YOOO!!! I wasn't expecting this but happy as a Louisianian! Master P a legend his biography would be crazy he started selling cd out his trunk, in college on a basketball scholarship, starts a record shop, label gets a unprecedented deal becomes a platinum artist THEN makes the NBA he tells how in Charlotte(which is the bible belt so this plays into what happened.) The GM called him in said "you're a helluva player but your music is pure filth.... gotta let you go." His subject matter is what got him released but he's already a platinum artist so it didn't matter to him. Makes successful clothing line, produces and stars in his own films(also putting his folk on No Limit artist were always the cast of the movies) goes on to do successful real estate business. Like we have a hard enough time being successful in 1 field Percy has lived the dream of many fields and I wanna say it was all before he was even 40! Dude's been a legend for decades now & he needs his flowers. I mean Jay-Z gets this credit like he's done something unprecedented and no knock to the man, but you hear plenty and I mean PLENTY of shady reasons why he got to that position not to mention having that Power Couple dynamic in his favor. P accomplished just as much w/o none of the "he screwed me over to get there" talk on his name.
Mr Ice Cream Man is a spin of Before You Turn Off the Lights by World Class Wrecking Cru... which Dr Dre was a member. So good to hear Dad mention him.
Mystikal is a great rapper in his own right. But unfortunately, he got into some legal trouble during the height of his solo career. But talent-wise, he'll always be one of my favs. Silkk the Shocker was always criticized for being offbeat whenever he rapped. 😂
No Limit put out 23 albums in 1998. 10 went platinum, 11 went gold. That is just in-sane! That was the same year as DMX, Jay-Z, Big Pun, The LOX, Gang Starr, NORE, Cam’ron, Lauryn Hill, Busta Rhymes, Method Man, Redman, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit and OutKast all released hugely successful albums. The south definitely has had something to say ever since.
It had to do with the deal he got. He got offered a million and his brother C Murder wanted to take it. P was smart and brokered a deal unheard of. He was like the only rapper in the game with real money.
I don't mind the choices he made for introducing it to someone new, especially someone not super familiar with rap, but I agree those were very mid-level songs in the Master P catologue.
dont forget he had a 10 day contract with the hornets in the nba if im right ? or it was only training camp for 10 days , correct me if im wrong please people . respect to master p tho !!!! shit im old lol im 37 now pfff
You guys NEED to check out 2 no limit artists in particular.. Mac "Mac Phipps" , he put out 2 classics on No Limit. He's the most lyrical and best story teller from no limit. He got falsely accused of murder when his career was going to take off. Spent 21 years in prison for it and now he is out doing great things. Also Mia X is one of the greatest female emcees , if not the greatest .
I think your dad would like: Master P - Burbons And Lacs, Master P - Always Come Back To You, Snoop Dogg & Master P - Snoop World! Other No Limit-records: Snoop Dogg & Mia X - Slow Down, Mystikal - Ghetto Fabolous, C-Murder - Ghetto Millionaire, C-Murder - Where Do We Go ✨
Amazing review of Master P! I think your Dad would really enjoy a few songs from Project Pat from his “Mista Don’t Play” album. He’s another legend from the south, he came from the 3-6 Mafia camp
No Limit released a new cd almost every Tuesday between 1998-2001. They had over 20 artists. They were going gold every week. 500k copies sold was a huge accomplishment weekly. They had a production team that really led to this consistency of sales.
Glad you made this one, brings back memories. No Limit had it locked down in the late 90’s early 2000’s. Was always something to look forward to from them.
I love No Limit so much! Mystikal and Mia X are my faves. I owned all of their CDs I think. Mac- Boss B***** (w/ Mia X) Master P- Bout it Bout it Mac- M$rder M$rder K!ll K!ll (w/ Mystikal) Silk- it ain’t my fault (w/ Mystikal) Lil Jon- I don’t give a F (w/ Mystikal) Mystikal- Danger Mystikal- shake ya a$$ Snoop Dogg- Woof Friend is good too but I can’t think of the names of the songs I like. This makes me wanna find those CDs. Lol gotta make a playlist. lol
Master P always said he was not a great rapper. He put his money behind his brothers Silkk and C Murder. Many have done so afterwards, but Silkk was the first to intentionally rap offbeat as a signature style. None of No Limits music was prolific or profound, but P changed everything known of the industry by amassing a huge group of artists on a label and releasing albums every 20-30 days. This was honestly made possible by the label’s exclusive producers “Beats By The Pound” (KLC, MO-B Dick, Majic) who worked night and day on production and even singing hooks on the songs. When they left the label, it essentially fell apart.
No limit emo songs are cringy. Too bad you picked this one from Gheto D but cool you did Master P! Maybe in future do bout it bout it song with Mia X. Now that’s a 5 star beat! Also check out Iz They Wildin Wit Us & Gettin Rowdy Wit Us? by Mystikal and Busta Rhymes.. showcasing these two rappers fast paced rap styles.
Fiend was one of my faves on the label. Hes the second artist to rap. His albums are so good, oast to present. He's one of the few that is still putting out music. Silkk is very well known for not ever being on the beat, he's even admitted it. As a 42 year old adult, it drives me nuts. But back in the 90's, you couldn't tell me anything bad about any of them. Brings back so many memories, I love it! Mia X was the "Mother" of the whole label. Aka "Mama Mia." I have so much useless knowledge of No Limit Records, lol.
I'm from Louisiana and I met Master P and took a selfie with him as he introduced his new basketball league along with other famous celebrities. Nipsey Hustle funeral was the weekend before, he flew into Shreveport, Louisiana from California.
Silkk the Shocker too influence from California Bay Area rappers for his "off beat" rap style. It has annoyed many of us thoroughout the years lol Mia X is that chick and should get a little bit more praise, if you're asking me! I use to study Mystikal's lyrics and flow just to rap along with him lol smh
lol don’t try to blame Silk’s style on California 🤣 he couldn’t stay on beat or in flow if he’s life depended on it . I swear someone should have rapped his verse first then he should have rapped over it or with it.
Y'all did master p absolute classic each track....do master p ghetto dope off the ghetto d album or break em off something featuring ugk off Ice cream man album....great reaction tho.
