Although Christian now works as a media composer his route into orchestral began working within the first wave of drum and bass with the likes of LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad (via a stint composing music for porn films). In this clinic Christian discusses the way he would prepare a drum loop for programming compared to Logic's latest Beat Breaker plugin.

Stopped after 10 minutes... The old man's style was so cool to see, I've to take my sampler and old rehearsal tapes from my metal band two decades ago. I like the idea to understand what is actually happening in order to value the functionality of a tool... Thanks a lot!!!

AS someone who got thrown in at the deep-end of Drum and Bass back in 2021, I’m still in beautiful awe of how these beats come about. I does the chord things, and my producer does all the beat things. I’m still learning how it’s done, so this is incredibly helpful. If anyone’s curious I’ve been working with Zero T, and been learning a lot in the process.

@@TheCrowHillCo well Christian its much deserved and to you too! You're very inspiring. Please check out Zero T 's music if you haven't already. The mark of a master is someone who can write hard and soft tracks with equal ease and he can do it so, so well. On making beats,I'm both a budding composer and DnB producer with some releases out there (Amante) and i either make my beats from scratch in Reason Re-drum or if i want original breaks iuse the dr rex and choose from the many in a the dnb rex refill pack - they can all be exported to midi and it auto maps the individual break hits for easy manipulation! So quick to do!

Your manual beat chopping is so much more musical than the Logic beat muncher! It's the difference between "making music" and "toying with loops".

The old man style whilst being incredibly tedious to set up is the only way for me! I love the idea of having all the pieces of the puzzle premade and then you just have to focus on programming and sequencing to work your way through the maze. You could even resample the Beat Break plugin, chop it all up and add that back to your sampler instrument. 'Edit' you did that at the end! Love when you dip back into your old workflows for jungle/dnb. ✌😊

This is really fun! Your method of chopping everything is extremely tedious and highly engineered. For the general user I think this plugin is amazing and looks quite fun. Fl Studio had a plugin similar to this back in the day with less capabilities. Amazing job 🎉

A tip for my fellow oldies doing the "manual style'' : Set pitch bend range on the sampler to -12 semis and then record an automation lane with the pitch wheel whacked down. Then half the BPM in the sequencer. Now you only have to play your beat chops at half the speed. Once you've recorded your chops get rid of the automation and increase the BPM again.

Nice stuff. Hadn't seen anyone wander through Beat Breaker yet and the one time I opened it up I wandered off. I really do love iZotope's Stutter Edit. I'll tend to put together a whole bunch of random garbage fed through stutter edit and then bounce that and start chopping with it. That kit workflow you showed off is pretty brilliant. Need to mess around with it.

Thanks, my thing is I can't do tech stuff at same time as music stuff. I think its because I'm working to picture so the music and the story are taking up too much of my brain to break off and chop a loop, so I'm a big fan of preparing... Its also a way to procrastinate productively.

Break Tweaker & Stutter Edit by Izotope & BT. I have these and they is great but I much prefer your way of doing this old style. The old way you can focus more on the beat you want rather than having an automatic beat that you can change so quickly that it is becomes more more more. Glad you are still around doing videos. Amazing and well placed/timed edits can make ones hair stand on end - overuse however dilutes the affect... There was a time that little insecty sounds and mini edits were the 'in thing', and it the offending genres definitely lost the musicality in certain artists search for the 6,000 edit per minute progressive house record! Also, didn't even realise this plugin was available. Enjoyable to see your breadth of knowledge and skills is far wider than simply film/composing!

Well, the drum breaks are rarely processed that little. They almost always are chopped in more of a staccato fashion, and its common to set the chops up to choke each other so when you play a chop before the last chop has finished playing it cuts the prior one off. For the "playstation" ambient jungle of that era also there's always like an uplifting or ethereal pad played almost straight through the track, and the bass that was the most common for that was a sine bass, because it was a tone that came with the Akai S950 sampler.

Sounds really good, but too complicated and too busy for commercial music, the odd "bits" distract from the melody and in my humble opinion the focus of the music and potentially the song that would be overwhelmed by the drums sounds being the main focus. I am old school too, I use a Roland XP80 with a Roland XR & JV2080 to sequence my tracks, real 1990s old school, and build tracks and songs in that format. I prefer less complicated.
