I would rather a pay one time fee and own the sample library outright

Or atleast the option for libraries that are really useful.

Unless I’m mistaken, I think the model Christian is describing is more like paying for use of a shared drive, from which you will be able to download sample instruments while they are hosted there, and keep whatever you’ve downloaded even after it has been removed from the drive, aka “vault”. So if that’s correct, your one-time-fee is the equivalent of one month of subscription.
@Herfinnur
@Herfinnur 8 месяцев назад
You can. Just pay five bobs, download everything and cancel the subscription. No harm no foul
@Imar13
@Imar13 7 месяцев назад
@@nealjohnson7473 the way I understood it is that you get some slots in the free version and when you pay for the subscription you get access to those slots with their samples and you can basically switch them out for the ones in your free slots. Say you start with 5 free slots you can subscribe for a month and swap your 5 free samples for the ones in the subscription but you will lose access to your free samples.

I can manage a fiver a month for amazing libraries like Attic Grand. On a very tight budget here so any more cost will put me out of the market. I like the idea of a continual turnover of content, provided we can keep what we've downloaded and always have them. I think that's how you explained it. Well done for bucking the usual subscription trend!

Perhaps 'membership' is a better term for your novel idea? So if I understand it, as 'members' of Crow Hill, we get access to the vault(s) and can download (and keep, with a perpetual license) the libraries as they are released, but your special sauce is that we have to grab them before they disappear out of the vault. That's certainly an interesting idea, I appreciate it's designed to keep us as 'members', which feels fair, and adds an element of exclusivity to the idea. Please make it easy for people to pause/restart their membership. You could also offer annual bundles at a minor discount - £5/month or £50/year? You could also consider offering pay-once bundles periodically so those who had paused membership, or those to find you later on, can 'catch up' on things they missed. It all sounds great to me, I'd be happy to subscribe.. I mean, 'become a member' :) for a year to support you and see what you're planning.

I thought a long time I figured you out...and this video cements my suspicion. You once heared "artificial scarcity" and then just ran with it.
@TheCrowHillCo
@TheCrowHillCo 8 месяцев назад
Well I've now heard of it! I think because people see things being on the cloud they see them as being just Is&Os that cost nothing to distribute. But it does in fact mean that things are stored not on an actual cloud but on servers around the world. This server space may seem infinite but this is just an illusion. When forming a business such as this a MAJOR cost impact to the business is AWS fees (or similar) which can have a huge impact on businesses. I've learned this the very very hard way. So whilst the scarcity may seem artificial the cost of storage and distribution very much isn't. Thanks for raising an interesting point (CH goes off to research artificial scarcity).

You asked for feedback, so here goes. Perhaps a single (one-time) access level to your vaults? Like many, I stay away from subscriptions. I thought your example of Adobe was spot on. All that said another consideration, for me, is local currency. I don't work well with moving targets. So for example, US dollars don't work. Love the Attic Piano. I am so happy that you are back. You are a wonderful person.

That one time access is the 5 $/£/€ for that one month, which gives you time to download, but after that, the product is yours. Have I got that right Christian? The “subscription” is for the access to the downloads, but the license is forever?

Totally agree with your reasoning and approach. The world is fast becoming a renter's society where eventually nobody will own anything. Cars on subscription, houses to rent, video subscriptions, music subscriptions, and so on... but stop those subscriptions and you have and own nothing. It's like selling you an experience. Maybe some people are happy with this, after all you cannot take material things with you when you pop your clogs... but consumers should have choice and we should not have to pay for the rest of our lives just to use something that could (in the case of software) suddenly disappear off the planet if the company closes.

You've hit the nail on the head with the way you've designed this plugin to play better. This has been my main gripe with sampled pianos and their inadequate performance in terms of velocity sensitivity. I tried using MIDI scripts to change the sensitivity range in my DAW, which helps, but I have to say brilliant work!! fixing this issue. I've only just found your company after using Spitfire stuff for many years and enjoying the professionalism of the libraries. All the best with your current work. I will be following your work closely and definitely want to buy some of these wonderful plugins you are creating.

I don't fully understand how the vaults will work but I'm almost certain it wouldn't interest me. That being said I did sub to Logic Pro on iPad, which surprised me - but that is a lot of content for £4.16 a month. Even then I worked out if I use it for 15 years, it'll have cost me £750, which would probably be the most I've paid for any software - and that's quite a lot more than I'd like to have paid for something that, iif I stop paying, I won't be able to access any longer - so I'll likely knock that on head before long. I get your point about keeping stuff, but I really hate ongoing fees for anything because, like a lot of VST junkies, I always tell myself this one purchase is the last one and now I can finally spend money on life things like my wife, dogs, house and car. (maybe even a holiday)

This is a perfect idea, almost an exemplar / model of how sample Library subscriptions should be implemented and so long overdue too! It’s putting the musicians before the money, the artistry before the accountancy, not locking us into preposterous fixed term subscriptions with no guarantee of longevity (particularly in this industry) to implement something like this would be so welcomed and extremely appreciated by myself and I’m sure everyone else!

First off I want to say I absolutely support this idea and think it's cool. That being said, I feel much like you Christian, and am fairly against subscriptions at this point. I have more samples and recordings then I can keep track of, and there is little I would still subscribe to. I like buying things outright. The one thing I make an exception for is stiff that really inspires me, something that does that and fit right under my fingers and my particular way of being creative. Anything that fits that I would subscribe too. That also being said. Testing something for a fiver I am almost always willing to do if it looks interesting. I think five💲 is a good start and should be fairly available to a lot of folks. Just don't lock us in for a year 😅

Always good to hear your thoughts, Christian, and you are neverr less than forthright. I will wait and see what is in these vaults, but I am not opposed to the idea if it stays cheap = otherwise an alternative of buying stuff outright might be a good idea to run in parallel - but maybe not everything in the vault, just some of it. What I particularly like though is your drive to create communities around businesses, which for me makes it much more than a business. That approach, I thnk your have proved in your endeavours so far, makes the business far more likely to succeed, and expand in ways that you don't necessarily anticipate, because your community will offer ideas and input to add to the total sum of happiness. In this digital and social media age it makes sense, and i think you have a natural and instinctive talent for it. Many businesses have no idea how to harness this interdependent world we now inhabit, but you have a great way to get peopke involved in what is a journey. I look forward to joining the adventure.

Google's Stadia game streaming service actually had almost this exact subscription model, while it was around. They would have a "vault" of games that subscribers could add to their library. Every month, new games were added to the vault and the oldest ones were removed, but any game you added would stay in your library. The big difference is that, if I remember, you only had access to that library of 'complimentary' games so long as you kept paying for the subscription (and that's a BIG difference)

A fabulous piano, what a gift! Thank you! I personally would be unlikely to subscribe to anything. I like to buy the instruments in my collection; I have no idea what a subscription done this way is going to bring me in advance of the release for each instrument. When I buy I know what I am getting and my money goes straight to the software instruments I know I want. That's why I love the Spitfire Audio Originals - and Labs of course. This model is however far better than the Software As a Service model; if something really irresistible comes along I might subscribe for a while just to get that one instrument. Luck might then bring me something else I will use before the subscription ends. That's me then... Once I get BBCSO Professional and the matching piano I will rarely if ever spend money on software instruments. I have a ton of them and with Logic Pro's Alchemy and Sampler I can make hundreds more. A bit of experimenting with any good DAW and a sampler plug in with synthesis and/or processing capabilities can make you an almost infinite variety of instruments, each unique to your own collection.

It looks like it needs to be hammered home more that you keep the instruments once you have them. So you actually are buying them outright, but the subscription ensures you don't miss any releases. Many of the misgivings seem to be that it feels like you don't keep the software, but you actually do! It's literally a comic / magazine subscription, you keep the magazines! It's a much better subscription model. You'll probably need big reassurances on ongoing technical support for items that get old and are no longer in their respective vault. But if the software build remains quality and stable for each plugin then probably a forum will be fine for that! Speaking of a forum, will there be one? Future compatability is a question also, for example new OSs will sometimes mess up your plugins, and things like future hardware architecture can render some unusable, if you have future proofed the GUI for that somehow or pledge to do so for new environments that would be a big selling point too. The flexibility to choose vaults sounds good. You could also have a feature where products can be brought back into a vault now and then by popular demand, say for a limited time, for newer subscribers that missed a plug in. Or just create an archive vault for the most popular plugins. Another idea that could be great is that since this is aimed at people who can afford say £5 a month, people on that budget also tend to use free FX plugins (or those terrible "99% off! Today only" Plugins) that's a gap in the market for better quality FX plugins on a more reasonable budget. Inventive things would be ideal here, not just yet another chorus/flanger/ reverb/amp etc.. This whole thing could also be appealing to people with different levels of disposable income, as you pick how many vaults you spend on, and which ones. Perhaps a free subscription for every X number of subscriptions too? Also, It looks like if someone could only afford, say, £5 or £10 a month and they see a plug in they love on another vault, they can just subscribe for one month, get that particular item and keep it, which is great if that's the case. As long as people can't "hop" between vaults using the same fiver of course😂 looking forward to seeing how this grows!! 👍😁
