I think it hit dad so hard because he believed in their close relationship and then she not only did something he wouldn't want but kept it from him. I'd feel like maybe we weren't so close afterall. It took many trips to the artist to complete a full color sleeve. He obviously accepted her choice to get tattoos by the smaller ones he'd seen but felt slapped in the face by the secret she kept from him and revealed at the worst possible time. I feel sad for both of them. Her regret and his loss of faith in how close they really were.

Personally I don’t like nose piercings. Had been telling my kids for years not to get one after my oldest got his lip pierced and it got badly infected. Then my daughter got her septum pierced. 🤷‍♀️ I now buy her the occasional nose ring as a present. 😂 We laugh that my dislike of nose rings is over-powered by my love of anything sparkly.

I kept my sleeve a secret from my parents for 3 years (and I was still living under their roof at the time) before a similar situation arose and I was a bridesmaid for my brother's wedding 4 years ago where I couldn't hide it anymore. To this day my dad disproves of the sleeve (not a fan of tattoos in general) and calls it ugly from time to time depending on his mood but that's ok with me, I just remind him it's a good thing the sleeve is on my skin and not his and that I'm happy to live with it (and all my other tattoos) for the rest of my life ❤

Leaving aside the issues of she can do whatever she likes with her own body, I don;t understand how they can both say they have an incredibly close relationship but she got a full sleeve tattoo "years ago" and he doesn't know. A silly mistake was my first tattoo at 17, a whole themed sleeve is a real commitment its something she wanted. It wasn't a drunken one time mistake, that is several sessions. Ever since I was 18, I wanted a tattoo. I always knew it would be in memory of my best friend who died when we were freshmen. I finally decided on a design and got it done for my 22nd birthday. Both of my parents aren’t fans of tattoos, but I knew my mom would be understanding after knowing what it meant to me. I told her the day before I went, but was too afraid to tell my dad. My dad didn’t speak to me for 2 whole days, he refused to even look at it. It wasn’t until my uncle made a comment about how big it was (from shoulder blade to shoulder blade) that my dad became curious enough to want to see it. My uncle showed him the picture I posted on Facebook and he called it a “monstrosity” because of the size. He eventually cooled off and told me “don’t ever come home with any part of your body pierced, besides your ears.” Good thing I’ve never been into body piercings, or else I might be disowned by now 😂

So I am someone who loves tattoos. I've been talking about getting tattooed since I was a teen, yet my parents don't like them at all. The feeling of showing them my first tattoos was horrible (and I was 27 when I got them) - I cannot imagine how much stress and anxiety this girl's feeling having to keep it hidden from her dad all the time and how many bad feelings she has about her tattoos because of him. His reaction overshadowed her picking her wedding dress... She might have wanted a sleeveless one, but had to settle because of her dad. Parents need to get over themselves. It's permanent and it's already done so all they're doing is upsetting their children and adding a bad memory and significance to something that their children initially liked. I told my parents that I didn't need their approval or appreciation, I'm just informing them that I got tattooed and am planning to get more, but the whole thing made me so anxious I could have thrown up. When I got my biggest tattoo, one that I really wanted, I had a panic attack anticipating their reaction (and it's not even that big, @ 4 cm). I wish parents understood that their children's body doesn't belong to them.
