It's image association. If every black man was a lawyer/ store clerk/ doctor/ accountant, with only a few bad apples.... do you really think the black community would have the same perception the community has had since the late 70s? Kevin Costner directed a movie called “Black and White.” In it, he said something nuanced that brilliantly addresses this video’s point. He said that his first thought might be biased, but that is not what counts. It’s the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th thoughts that matter... because that is where the action is. Prejudice doesn’t matter... until you act on it.
@littlestepperspreschool3278
@littlestepperspreschool3278 3 года назад
The danger is that it's there, in your heart. The things that are in your heart, you act upon eventually. Maybe in a small way, but you do act upon it. It's the matter of the heart that we MUST deal with. It's not enough to say "I didn't act upon it." That's just justifying it's presence. It's not okay for it to be there! We have to remove it from the heart by the roots that planted it there in the first place It's like lusting after your brother's wife, and then saying "well, I didn't act upon it". That's not okay! Not okay.
@StrategicWealthLLC
@StrategicWealthLLC 3 года назад
@@littlestepperspreschool3278 - People frequently say what you wrote, but what you wrote is simply not true. As a related example, people have murderous thoughts when another party cuts them off in traffic... but a tiny percentage of a tiny percentage of a tiny percentage... succumb to road rage and commit murder. This is why the “implicit bias test” is not used in court. Your thought is logical, but it isn’t supported by research. Logically, we wouldn’t wear seatbelts when driving in our neighborhoods... because we are driving so slowly. However, we are conditioned to put them on every time we enter the car. That observation is a photographic negative attack on logical behavior, also. Humans are weird... and flawed.

You can know something intellectually and still be unable to resolve conflicting feelings about it. I doubt the man was sitting there thinking 'oh there's a black guy, all black guys are more dangerous than others so I better be sure he doesn't hurt anybody'. I promise you, it was more a feeling he got, a gut feeling brought on by indoctrination/brainwashing most all of us suffer through some of in society, and just went with his feelings before thinking about wait a minute. This isn't right. He clearly knows people aren't more dangerous based on their skin color and that it's a dangerous stereotype, yet his instincts went with it at first anyway. Feelings can lead us all astray if we're not careful and examine things when we're calm.

Its so sad that even i find myself doing something similar. My situation doesn't have anything to do with race, but it has to do with myself being in a treatment program for addiction. I have been clean in the program for 4 years now, but I still find myself judging people that are walking down the street of the treatment centre. I think things like there is a junkie, or I find I hold my stuff tighter and closer because I'm afraid they are going to rob me. It takes me a second to process the fact, that people could be saying the same thing about me when I'm walking towards the centre and it really hurts because I would never hurt or rob anybody. Its honestly a really unfortunate situation and we as people just need to realize that as humans most of us want happiness, health and love....regardless of ethnicity, religion, finances....we just want to be accepted.

Please don't come to me with that. Too deep over here on the truth, not emotion, which is what that comment contained more of. One that can admit their mistakes and flaws and confront those mistakes and flaws and challenge themselves to do better, to be better, and to allow their children to see them go through this process teaches those kids how THEY too should live their lives by not being afraid to challenge their own beliefs and things they might be viewing in biased or unhealthy ways. To see a parent openly acknowledge their own bias and confront it and work on ways to combat their own biased is a rare thing.
